Cranberry Cheese Attack! OK Jul 28, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Bakery

I've always loved the idea of cranberry and cheese bread. I first ate them at a bakery near my house and have always been buying them for breakfast soon after my virgin taste!

Chanced upon Yamazaki's version of cranberry cheese bread ($2) the other day.

I like that the cheese filling in it burst out as i bite into it. Although a pity was that there was too little cranberry for me. The batter was a little funny too but the bread was still very soft! It felt like the texture of play-doh where one can press it to form into a shape! HAHA!

I still like the bakery near my house for it's bread but I think this would be good for those who prefer a soft bread with lots of cheese in it. One thing that didn't really stick with me was that the cashier was really mean. She had this perpetual frown on her face and after keying in the amount, she stares at you while you fumble for loose change and the queue starts getting longer and longer. She doesn't serve the next customer first but just wait until you find your coins. Bad attitude won't bring back customers! sad

Prawn Noodles OK Jul 28, 2013   (Related Review)

Prawn Noodles ($3), not that good.
The prawn was not very fresh as the shell was sticking to the meat a little. One good thing about this is that there were quite a lot of vegetables inside (kangkong and bean sprouts). Oh! Another good thing about this is that the fish cakes were quite thick and there were more than 3 pieces! I think i was given more as the owner seems to know my parents now. haha!
The soup broth was a little salty and didn't have the nice and strong prawn taste which i prefer );

Maybe i should stick to the bak chor mee the next time if I'm going back there to have breakfasts with my parent's friends. haha!

Back for more! OK Jul 28, 2013

I came back to try the ngoh hiang dishes at night after sometime from my previous visit.

What I like the most was the sauce with peanut provided to dip the ngoh hiang in! It smells really fragrant and adds to the taste of the ngoh hiang in your mouth. There was also numerous peanut bits which further enhances the taste. I choose the tofu, some type of fish cake with garnishes in it and the acclaimed ngoh hiang. (P.S. this ngoh hiang store is quite famous for it's ngoh hiang)
The tofu was ok, deep fried to a crispy brown but I felt that the corners were a little too hard and dry.
The fish cake was quite interesting due to the little garnishes in it, not to bad.
Lastly, the ngoh hiang was pretty good. It taste a little different from the other places as it was handmade but i wouldn't say it's out of this world.
Beehoon taste the same as the one from morning so they probably keep frying the whole day through which makes it very fresh.

The total cost was about $3.50-$4 which I felt was a little pricey for these few ingredients. I should probably stick to their breakfast 'menu' so as to avoid the heavy cost.

Eating at a coffee shop always brings me back to the younger days where uncles would gather at a table, drinking their coffees and talking at the loudest volume ever imaginable in their hokkien language whilst the drinks stall auntie would shout out random words from a mile away to take people's orders.
My family and I went to this coffee shop situated near out house which my parents seem to frequent with their friends. Surrounded my HDB flats, this was a place to meet for a quick chit chat with your neighbours.
We were there went the place was very packed and diners with sleepy children were waiting around for their food and there was surprisingly a long relatively long queue at this stall!

I tried the bak chor mee for $3 and I must say it is very flavourful. One could taste the nice-smelling sinful pork oil in your mouth as the individual gulps down mouth after mouth of mee. The fishball was a little salty though, but since it's not really the main ingredient, it shall be forgiven. The soup was laden with MSG which makes you want to drink it but know you should't. I love the combination of tomato ketchup and chilli with the springy noodles and the meat was not tough which makes it pretty good.

Overall, I think that this place would be a nice place to dine with your friends and neighbours but i don't see myself travelling all the way from a far as the food is not extremely superb.

I couldn't resist visiting this branch since I was so near to the school! Japanese outlet in a school!? The students must either be getting more pocket money or the prices at this branch is relatively cheaper! Sadly, the prices are the same, haha! Guess the younger generations are able to afford more and more!

Being adventurous, I decided to try the Teriyaki Chicken Sumi Udon: Tender chicken slices and vegetables cooked in our sweet teriyaki sauce dipped in steaming hot broth ($13.99). I think Sumi means black charcoal? I was quite apprehensive about trying this dish as it was made from charcoal and one would usually think that charcoal = inedible. I could not taste the difference between the normal udon and sumi udon, was was a little different was perhaps the soup broth? It tasted a bit sweeter. There were about 4-5 pieces of chicken strips and some fishcakes, no more no less than outside.

I also ordered the kakiage (Shredded vegetable tempura - $2.29). As i wanted some vegetables to go with my meal. The only tradeoff was that it has to be fried :[ Decreased the healthy value of it.

Lastly, the mandatory the deep fried salmon slices ($2.29). The pieces given here was more or less similar to the branches outside so they didn't give lesser just because they taught that students wouldn't eat so much. haha!

I would most probably try the promotional items they have on which seems to attract most students in the next time round!
