Burp Kitchen OK Mar 15, 2016

Categories : Fusion | Bars/Lounges | Café | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

Burp kitchen has a nice location at the neighbourhood of Bedok, great for those living in the east and near Bedok reservoir! I'm a westie so definitely it was a challenge to come here.
One of my favourite dish would be the Baja Fish Tacos, fish was fresh and it was like Fish and chips (chips being the crispy chips) - $12

Another great dish would be the Crabby Patty - $18, I love soft shell crab and salted egg so this was like the best of both worlds, all in a charcoal brioche bun! I felt a tad too much salt went into batter of the soft shell crab but this can be tweaked and I hope to taste a better burger because this burger has so much potential!
Cheese lovers you must try the Chicken Quesadilla, it's so cheesy you will be so excited when you see the cheese stretch! It was kinda salty though.
For more salted egg items, check out their Salted Egg Tofu Fries, thickly fried tofu sticks and drizzled on with generous salted egg sauce.

Salted Egg wings, a lil overwhelming I'd prefer their Burp Kitchen Wings, sweet and tangy Adobo sauce, Filipino recipe and it's refreshing!

Tasting at Boruto Smile Feb 24, 2016

Categories : Italian | Japanese | Bars/Lounges | Restaurant | Pasta

smileAmazing interior, slightly dimmed and good for chilling in the evening after a long day at work, you can order their tapas-like bite-sized Western mixed Japanese fusion.
My personal favourite is the Crispy Rice Cracked Tacos, a nice combination of sweet, chewy and flavour packing a punch in a mouthful.
I liked the Tori-Take roll too - a crispy chicken roulade stuffed with shiitake jam, tender and juicy, drizzled with a special sauce of balsamic, wasabi, brown sugar and sesame oil. I can easily finish the whole portion alone!
It's overall a nice place to have sake and some bites while catching up with life, order your sake by 100ml glasses or you can also order a whole cylinder and keep them for all your subsequent visits till your bottle is empty (your name will be tagged on).
Would be great if they could have a bigger or more obviously hanged signboard outside the premises to guide customers in, I got lost, but I'm so thankful I was introduced to this place, albeit the high price and small portion could be a deterrence. Great place!

Review for L'eclair Smile Nov 06, 2015

Categories : French | Bakery | Desserts and Cakes

L’éclair – not your ordinary Éclair.

With graduates from Le Cordon Bleu Paris, Sarah and Michelle helming L’éclair, they built up their éclair business from scratch, experimenting everything down from the choux pastries, creating new flavours and making sure it is aesthetically pleasing.

We are honored to be able to try their most popular and best selling éclairs. Starting with one of their most popular éclair - Ispahan ($8.50), a lychee and rose cream éclair with raspberry fruit sandwiched in between the pastry choux, is easily the prettiest éclair among their selection, which any girl would fall in love with. Oh and yes that pretty petal is not only visually pleasing, it is also edible!

The orange éclair you see is their new flavor – Mango Passion fruit ($8). Slightly on the tardy side, it’s good for those who like their desserts sweet but yet want something sourish. I would go for something sweeter though.

On the other hand, their Lemon Meringue ($7.50), which I usually do not pick because I am not a fan of sour desserts, but THIS changed my mind, I actually found this really light, not too tangy and not too sweet, just the right balance.

Earl Grey ($8) is also another of our favourite, this black tea I frequently drink has become a pretty pastry (another excuse for me to eat more), not too strong an earl grey taste but just right there they hit the nail, plus they are topped with gold dusted blueberries!

Hazelnut Praline ($8), the only one with a different outlook as compared to the rest, has whole hazelnuts in them, which reminded me of Nutella, just much lighter, I could eat another one.

Are you sick of éclairs yet? No I’m not, but if you are thinking of something savoury, then their Chicken & Bacon is for you. With a nice sweet pastry-crust, inside is an aromatic mix of bacon, chicken and mushroom bits, so filling and good.

With such amazing interior and imported decorations, I can say I fell in love with this place, simple classic French style, which reminds me of Paris so much! While this might be a tad on the pricier side, I’d say you pay for what you get. Ingredients used are of high quality; you can’t just stop at one éclair (there goes my diet). Go and you will understand what I mean.

Review for Privé Café Smile Nov 06, 2015

Categories : American | Italian | Brunch | Kids-Friendly

Privé Café – A little closer to the sea After a nice and breezy stroll along the bridge, it leads you to Privé café, a blue “ocean” themed café makes you feel even closer to the sea. Privé is very kid-friendly and you can be sure your kids will be well entertained, all the way from the Cartoon Network to a mini playground!

Café week at the Privé café consist of their Brunch menu ($25) and Dinner menu ($35).

Food is amazing and I think it is best to go in groups so you can try more varieties of their food, right? Taking a look at Brunch, if you are hoping for your regular Eggs Benedict, this rendition would be perfect – Baked Eggs in Bread Bowl with Melted Cheddar. They have it in mushroom & spinach (Vegetarian option) or ham & sausage.

My personal favourite would be the former, and they do a really good bread bowl with oozy flowy eggs. Mains are even better, {Pan-Roasted Seabass} and {Baked Squid Ink Rice}, they were both amazing in their own way. Fish being very fresh and goes super well with their garlic-butter sauce, you just want to have more! And the Squid ink rice is surprisingly not overly oceany, I love that it is tomato based and rice al-dente.

Not free for Brunch? Fret not, because Privé has come up with a great Dinner menu, think Boston Clam Chowder, Aglio Olio, Sticky Date Pudding….. Squid Ink bread made in-house wasn’t an easy feat but they did it – dip the bread together with boston clam chowder and you will feel warm in the inside almost immediately.

I personally liked the Charred Broccoli Salad because all my favourites are in there, avocado, blistered grapes, parmesan and of course I want my broccoli! There is also Virginia Ham in there for you meat lovers.

A basic Aglio Olio comes with chili padi, sundried tomatoes and the usual drizzle of olive oil. THIS comes with Chilean scallops and smoked bacon, definitely not that basic an Aglio Olio…

Anti-pasta Meat lovers, pick your favourite Duck Leg Cassoulet, meat comes off the bone easily and it’s pretty tender although slightly gamey in my humble opinion.

Sticky Date Pudding VS Chocolate Posset, I’d run for the chocolate posset, slightly rich and tangy, thicker than a chocolate mousse, very smooth and there… you will see the whole bowl polished clean.

Dilmah x Earle Swensen's Tea Appreciation Workshop on the 7th October (Wednesday) really opened up my mind on various types of tea, their brewing techniques and food pairing.

It was a great and amazing session, we tried different types of premium Dilmah tea and also get to brew our own cup of Ceylon green tea and Earl grey tea. I personally preferred the Earl Grey one. I also learnt that we should just consume the first cup of freshly brewed tea for its maximum benefits rather than adding water to the cup of tea when it needs refilling! Who else is guilty for that? I am definitely one of those.
Being a tea lover, I thought I have been drinking TEA such as camomile tea, peppermint tea etc, but in actual fact, they are not even a type of tea (omg), they are known as infusions. Omg, I had no idea, but its not too late, because I know it now.

Another new fact: Do you know Oolong tea, white tea and black tea are all from the same plant?

I definitely didnt know this, I thought all teas are made from different species/types of plants which explains the differences in taste and colour. Actually it is the process that determines the taste and colour of the tea, one of their process is Fermentation.

This tea appreciation session by Dilmah's representative was indeed an eye-opening and informative one. I truly enjoyed this session. Thank you!
Also, we got to try Earle Swensen's Tea time Happiness set going at $6.90++, you get to have a cup of coffee or you pick your own Dlimah premium tea (6 flavours) and choose either a Chips & Slaw sandwich or a Neapolitan Layered icecream cake. We tried both and I would say to try the Chips & Slaw sandwich (there are REAL chips in it), my first time trying sandwiches with chips!
