Sunday morning Lor Mee Smile Jan 10, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hawker Centre

I've been patronizing this stall on Sunday mornings for a few years. This stall sells Lor Mee, Kampung Java Mee and Laksa. I've so far tried the Kampung Java Mee twice and countless times of Lor Mee. Super love the Lor Mee, will describe further below.

There were a couple of months in 2012 which they stopped business and rented the stall out to another Lor Mee business and now they are back! The stall is manned by a lady and her 2 children. Very friendly and well-mannered kids smile

I like the Lor Mee for its special taste. The gravy looks cloudy has a tinge of Ngor Hiang spices that is considered quite unique! At $3 per serving, there are fish cakes, ngor hiang, lor bak and chunks of fried fish. Portion is considerably huge too. Most of the time, I pack and they will readily ask if you'd like to separate the gravy and noodles. There can be occasional queues since it's the weekend.

The Kampung Java mee looks like Mee Rebus but of a more unique version as the gravy is lighter. There's also deep fried crumbs to add the extra crunch. I'll review the Kampung Java Mee next time. tongue

Separated noodles and gravy.

Look at the cloudy gravy! I believe those little dark specks are the ngor hiang spices powder that makes the gravy so unique.

I've walked past tables with these huge bowls countless times at People's Park Complex but had no idea which stall they were from. Looking at the food soaked in chilli oil really whet my appetite as I love chilli! I found the stall one evening but the queue was too long; more than 20 people so I decided to come back another day.

I finally had a taste of it on the first day of 2013. Since it was past lunch hour, the queue was shorter (still more than 5 people) so I decided to join in.

Looking at the food portion of those infront of me, I was worried the servings would be too huge. I ordered enoki mushroom, beansprouts, tang hoon, kangkong, pig skin and pork slices. The stall holder was very friendly and assured me that the ingredients are fresh and since I ordered mainly vegetables, they can be easily digested. I asked for medium spiciness.

After payment, I actually wanted to change to low spiciness but the stall holder said medium spiciness tastes better lol

My 8 items in the mala hot pot.

Whao! The food tastes very good! Spiciness was optimum and I was glad the stall holder insisted that I stick to medium. I thought it tasted a little salty but realized the mala hotpot needs to go together with plain rice. I had skipped the plain rice as I ordered food from other stalls as well.

Total damage $8; $1 for veg, $2 for pig skin and pork slices.

Nice. I will return for it, with rice next time smile

Fulfiling dinner Smile Dec 26, 2012

Had cravings for thai food with the wife and decided to try BaliThai at IMM. Was wondering what to eat and saw that the next table had unfinished pineapple rice. Decided against it and I guess we made the right choice as after the meal I happen to read another review about the pineapple rice (bad network reception within the restaurant).

Ordered the mango salad. How can one forget this appetizer at a Thai restaurant?

Somehow felt the mango wasn't as fragrant as we had expected.

Next was the long beans with salted egg yolk. The menu pictures show that the beans were tied in knots but the actual dish wasn't lol. Anyway, it's a refreshing taste as there were almost full egg yolks in the dish. Worth a try!

And yes, tom yam soup! Can't leave without trying. We ordered the seafood version. Soup was very good. Thick and filled with seafood. Wife found it a little too spicy which I later found out was because of the chilli padi at the bottom of the pot. Other than that, it's the perfect bowl of tom yam.

Tahu Telur! Served in a piece which the waiter helped to cut.

Overall quite average, made nice because of the sauce. The cucumber strips given were quite sparse and the skin of the tahu wasn't fluffy enough to give the extra oomph.

Think the best dish that night was the pandan chicken. Tender chicken parts (thigh) were wrapped in pandan leaves and deep fried. The chicken was well marinated and sweet. Comes in 4 or 6 pieces.

Total damage that night was $77, including 2 drinks. Wife had the Lemon Tea (not bad) and I had the Lemongrass which I felt it was quite diluted.

Pancakes Smile Nov 22, 2012

Hot pancakes! Was searching for some bites after lunch with my colleagues and found a Pancake stall in Taman Jurong using the openrice app. As there was no unit number, I walked around the 2 levels of food stalls and found this pancake stall at 02-110 tucked at the sides of the hawker centre. Not sure if it's Ah Long pancake but it sells a variety of pancakes.

The pancakes are freshly made and while queuing up, the stall holder was still making more. They come in crispy and soft versions. The soft version costs ~$0.10 extra as more pancake mixture was used.

As you queue, mouth-watering smell of pancake escapes from the hot pans and you can't wait to sink your teeth into one!

Tastes good and friendly stall holder happily told us to come back again.

Have included a shop with the stall unit number. Bon appetit!

Friendly and accomodating Smile Nov 22, 2012

Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

Dropped by Taman Jurong for lunch today and decided to order from 58 Minced Meat Noodle. I usually have it for dinner but decided to try the lunch version (Different cooks for Day and Night). The cook for the night was assisting with the preparation of the ingredients (Mushroom, button mushroom, pork slices, minced pork, pork liver).

The prices are $2.50/$3.00. Unlike usual hawkers who will ask if you'll want the larger portion, the stall holders will not ask and will stick to the standard $2.50 portion. Serving is already huge for the $2.50 version.

They are generous as the spring onions, vinegar and cut chilli (big and chilli padi) are self-service. The dried version was served quite wet with a layer of oil; the right way they should be served! Topped with extra vinegar, the sourish noodles is something minced meat noodles will love.

I forgot to take a picture of the noodles at the start but the empty bowls speak a lot for themselves tongue
Collect the food from the little opening and topped it up with spring onions and vinegar!
