Best cupcakes ever Smile Mar 22, 2012

I was most delighted when a sweet friend of mine sent me some goodies from Plain Vanilla Bakery! Cupcakes stores are dime a dozen nowadays, but PVB distinguishes itself from the fray with its refined offerings.

If you only have space for one cupcake, I urge you to try Strawberry White Chocolate. The vanilla cake was faultlessly airy and moist and surprised with a center of fresh, sweet strawberry bits. My favorite component had to be the cloudlike white chocolate frosting though...this was arguably the yummiest cupcake I've ever had and possibly the best cupcake that I'm ever going to have.

Chocoholics will surely take to PVB's chocolate hazelnut cupcakes. Swirled with impeccably smooth chocolate hazelnut frosting that's sweetened just right, the dark chocolate cake base is suitably richer and denser than its vanilla counterpart, and comes filled with a gooey Nutella centre. Although these cupcakes are best kept at room temperature as storing them in the refrigerator may cause them to dry out, I like to stow them into the fridge right before serving such that the frosting hardens up slightly!

This cupcake oasis dishes up mean brownies as well. Rich and fudgy with a gorgeously crunchy crust, they are best savored at room temperature if you like your brownies with a bit of chew. Alternatively, heat them up before serving if you like your brownies on the gooey side.

If you're too lazy to head to Holland Village, PVB does delivery for a charge of $8 with a minimum order of six cupcakes. Or you could spread the love with a gift of these mouthwatering delicious cupcakes!

Price: $3.20 per cupcake, $18 for a box of six

Paulaner Bräuhaus Smile Dec 07, 2011
Categories : German | European

Portions come in big sizes at Paulaner Bräuhaus; my party of four left with stuffed tummies after sharing three mains, a dessert and drinks. The first floor of this German establishment is home to a bar cum brewery, while the cozy restaurant housed on the second floor is festively decorated with a majestic Maypole and murals of traditional Bavarian scenes and costumes.
pork knuckle

pork knuckle

Crunchy skin meets tender meat in Paulaner's crispy pork knuckle, otherwise known as knusprige schweinshaxe ($29.50++). While decent, this porcine signature was not as succulent as I would have liked. Being no fan of fermented cabbage, I passed on the sauerkraut; the soft and hearty knödel (bread dumplings) which accompanied this dish were however quite pleasant. Paulaner Bräuhaus also serves boiled pork knuckles- has anyone tried them before?
currywurst

currywurst

Die “Currywurst” Klassisch mit Pommes und Currypulver (the German Currywurst classic with curried tomato sauce and French fries) ($17++). I had no complaints about the currywurst, but it was the curried tomato sauce that stole the show- beats regular ketchup anytime! While the fries were decidedly average, they were wiped out in no time as tools to wield the addictive curry dip.
sausage pan

sausage pan

What's German food without sausages? Unfortunately, the Paulaner sausage pan ($25++)- which comes with Thüringer, cheese sausage, debreziner, pork sausage and spicy Kolbazi sausages- failed to impress. The sausages weren't particularly juicy, neither were they grilled to a crisp. The powdery reconstituted mashed potatoes were equally mediocre.
kaiserschmarrn

kaiserschmarrn

The highlight of the meal would be the Karamellisierter Kaiserschmarrn mit Apfel-Pflaumenkompott (caramelized Bavarian emperor's pancake with apple plum compote) ($12.50++). Prepared a la minute and served piping hot, the fluffy bite-sized pancake pieces were coated with a crisp caramelized sugar. While it was expectedly on the sweet side, Paulaner's kaiserschmarrn is definitely one of my favorite pancakes around and is a dish that I will return for!

Mazechirashi love Smile Jul 13, 2011

Having dinner at Aoki is a pricey affair, starting from $165++ per pax. But it's possible to get a premium sushi fix at the restaurant without bursting your budget, for Aoki dishes up affordable set meals during lunchtime (at $30++ and above), without compromising on quality or portion size.

Being one who'll never pass on a chance to catch the skillful sushi chefs in action, I opted for a seat at the counter. But the tranquil atmosphere of the restaurant makes it an ideal location to catch up with friends- you should consider sitting at the private booths on the second floor if you intend on doing so.

The meal started off with a tasty braised renkon otoshi ($3++), followed by a simple but refreshing salad- for a dose of fiber and vitamins!

Salad tossed in a soy sesame dressing

What makes Aoki’s mazechirashi an excellent deal is the vast variety of seafood it features. Unearthing the assortment of fresh sashimi piled atop, I discovered pieces of buttery uni, shoyu-marinated ikura, as well as cubes of ebi, tako, shime saba, kanpachi, shiromi, maguro and chutoro. The well-seasoned sushi rice was also topped with delightfully spongy cubes of tamago castella, slices of cucumber, nori strips, shreds of perilla and a dollop of nama wasabi. Needless to say, I polished it all off with much relish!

Colorful tsukemono, pickled ginger and a bowl of prawny miso soup were served along with the mazechirashi.

Variety pleases me, and the trio of the dessert miniatures- namely plum wine jelly, smooth milk pudding drizzled with caramel sauce and icy muskmelon sherbet– certainly made for a light but satisfying ending to the meal. A cup of genmaicha was also served to aid digestion- a thoughtful gesture on the kitchen's part!

Food aside, the service was attentive and I loved the pretty tableware. To round it all off, I had great company as well!

The mazechirashi set is priced at $35++.

P.S. Do make a reservation before visiting Aoki as the restaurant can be quite packed at lunchtime. If you're planning to order the mazechirashi, it would be wise to indicate so in your booking- I heard that the restaurant only makes 10 bowls of it a day for lunch. どうぞめしあがれ!

An ideal spot for a dinner date OK Jun 03, 2011

Categories : Italian | Restaurant | Seafood | Steaks and Grills

Contrary to the noisy and crowded pubs that line Club Street, Nazt Bistro Lounge offers a cozy ambience suitable for a quiet night out. The dim lighting, however, did make food photography a rather arduous task.
Bread

Bread

Warm and fluffy slices of herb bread and white bread were served after we placed our orders, I preferred the former.
Seafood Delight

Seafood Delight

Seafood Delight ($22++): Oven baked fillet of sole, grilled prawn & clams served with clam chowder, caviar & crab oil

Cooked to flaky doneness, the mild-flavored sole proved to be a good match with the rich clam chowder perfumed with crab oil. The caviar-topped freshwater prawn that was the centerpiece of this dish didn't disappoint either, with its fresh and sweet flesh.

Pan Seared Watermelon

Pan Seared Watermelon ($8++): Caramelized watermelon with berries & ice cream

Warm watermelon's not my thing but I certainly enjoyed the delicious scoop of honey ice cream. This was made all the more delicious when paired with crunchy bits of buttery crumble.

While the friendly and unobstrusive service would be ideal for couples, I've got to admit that it was difficult to attract the waiter's attention when it was time to pay the bill! For those watching their wallets, there is also a $18++ three-course set lunch available at bNazt.

Durian treats, all year round Smile Dec 31, 2010
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hotel | High Tea | Buffet

Launched only this year, Goodwood Park Hotel's homemade durian ice cream is available until 7 January 2011 for takeaway from the Deli at S$14.80 for a 16oz tub. Smooth, creamy and robust in flavor, the durian ice cream here ($6.50++ a scoop) is easily one of the best in Singapore. If only it was less pricey!

I also ordered the Durian crêpes ($15++). I love the fact this item is permanently featured on the menu, providing me with my durian fix even when the theony fruit is not in season. This dessert compirised two thin crêpes generously filled with smooth and creamy D24 durian pulp, crowned with a scoop of Mövenpick vanilla ice cream. Don't be fooled by the seemingly manageable portion size in the above picture- I would not advise one to attempt to finish this by oneself after a meal, unless you have an unusually large appetite for durian creations.
