Panini OK Aug 17, 2010

Categories : Italian | European | Restaurant | Pasta

Ricciotti at Riverwalk is opened everyday, even public hoildays. Their desserts and italian foods are quite popular. The location, facing The Singapore River, suitable for a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience. I love their desserts, they are so exquisite and unique.

The Menu, ranging from Authenic Italian fares to desserts. There are several options to choose from. Their home-made gelato are also recommended.

”Panini” , small Italian Sandwich filled with meat, cheese, grilled vegetables…etc. I had the ORTOLANO. (Zucchini, eggplants, capsicums, sun-dried tomatoes and basil pesto). The panini bread is grilled and pressed, filled with grilled vegetables. The grilled zucchini and capsicums were alright. However, the eggplants slices were a little tough and diffcult to chew. I love eggplants that has the smoky flavor but this fails to impress me. The greenish colour of the pesto spread looks a little digusting but looks can be deceiving. The panini bread were spread with basil pesto which were flavoursome.

The Service here is commendable, very friendly and helpful. Recommended for relaxing dining and italian fares.

sandwiches OK Aug 17, 2010

Lite Bites Café is a popular breakfast and lunch bar in the Central Business District.
Their mission at Lite Bites Café is to deliver Tasty, Healthy, and Nutritious food and drinks. We maximize the use of whole grains and ingredients low on the Glycemic Index (GI ) in the gourmet sandwiches, so that the customers enjoy great tasting food without an overload of calories.

There are a few selctions of sandwiches and you just have to choose your choice of bread and sandwich of choice.
I had the Falafel (Veg) sandwich, chickpea patty, hummus, lettuce, tomatoes, yoghurt and herb dressing. All served on Kraftcorn Bread.

Falafel is fried ball or patty made from ground chickpeas and/or fava beans. It is an excellent source of protein, fiber, iron and other nutrients. The patty is a little on the grainy side, the patty breaks and crumbles easily. I didnt like it. The kraftcorn bread is soft, full of seeds and nuts and sandwiched with some lettuce leaves and tomatoes slices. It is then spread with theiryoghurt and herb dressing. The dressing taste like mediterrean salsa sauce. The bread wasn’t toasted thus it went soft and I didnt like it.

Oatmeal Raisin cookie

I am not sure whether it is baked in house or they get it from suppliers. The cookie is not too sweet and I think they sweeten it using brown sugar. The cookie is packed with lots of raisins…love it! The oat flakes on top added nutty and chewy texture and extra fibre!

The Service here is generally friendly and effcient. Lite Bites cafe also provides delivery and there are quite a number of people ordering take-away sandwiches and coffee. However, the majority would prefer delivery. A ideal place for breakfast or tea.

Cafe in a gym OK Aug 17, 2010

Categories : Bars/Lounges

Sky Cafe, it is well hidden at Level 16 of Harbourfront Tower 2. I wouldn’t have come to the cafe if I had not search HGW. The breathtaking view also includes that of Sentosa and Mount Faber. This cafe is inside Sky Fitness Club and I find myself a little ”out-of -place” when I dine at the cafe. The customers are people who wants to enjoy healthy yet tasty cuisine before and after their workout.

The menu demostrate some of the healthy food such as wholemeal sandwiches, lot-fat brownies, burgers, pastas…etc. Choices are quite limited though. The are brown rice sets and the protein drinks are quite popular. The people there would probably ”power” up with protein drinks and bar before and the start of their work-outs.

Ultimate Veggie Sandwich ($6)

Since there is only 1 person tending the cafe, he had to do the ordering and preparing of the food. The sandwich took abt 15mins to arrive. 3 slices of wholemeal bread with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese and capsicums. I have added extra egg-whites and tofu to go along with the plain veggie sandwich. The tofu is actually soy bean cake, it was served cold and I didn’t like that.

They serve a fat piece of cheese which was not even melted. It was a little gross and turn-off. The sandwich is actually quite filling, with all the healthy ingredients. It was almost too healthy and definately not for anyone who is a carnivore.

The cafe is taken over 3 times by different owners, they used to have raw lasagne but the current, just simple stuffs. I would probably return for the work-outs but not for the food.

Vis a vis revisited OK Aug 17, 2010

Categories : French | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

I was really impressed with the Chilean Seabass that I had the previous visit . This time round, I took the usual weekly chef’s menu priced at $58++.

Vis a Vis House Salad

It was clearly a simple mesclun salad but what makes it a little ”special” was the addition of some strawberries . The balsamic vinaigrette was sweet and has a pleasant taste.

The set comes with a choice of striploin or the Roasted rainbow trout. I would definitely go for the latter as this fish is high in Omega 3 (essential fatty acid gd for health).

Frankly speaking, Rainbow trout is not really an expensive fish but it is not commonly sold in wet markets and supermarkets. I bought a packet of frozen rainbow trouts which cost only $15 !!! ( 5 whole rainbow trouts) . If you do your calculations, it cost a mere $3 for one whole fish and the restaurant raised the price 10X. Well, you can save the hassle of deboning and I wouldn’t mind paying if the chef does a good job.

Roasted Rainbow trout perfumed with beurre blanc

The fish is panfried , served with some asapargus and pomme noisettes . When the dish was served to me, I mistook the pomme noisette as mini scallops. I tried to verify with them and they told me it was scallops.

The texture is very different from scallops which was supposed to be slightly chewy and perhaps bouncy . However, the ‘‘scallops” was a little starchy and floury. I began to suspect it to be pomme noisette. I verify it again with another staff whom she confirmed it was pomme noisette. In the first place, why did confirm it was scallops? The fish was overdone, resulting in a rough texture. I have tried grilling the Rainbow trout @ home and the meat was smooth and soft, very different from this. I was a little disappointed with the preparation of this dish.

Baked Parcel of crepe with chocolate couverture & Vanilla ice-cream

In simpler words , crepe filled with chocolate and sliced bananas.

The crepe was filled with slices of bananas and dark chocolate. There is nothing fanciful or special about this crepe except that the Chocolate used was Valrhona chocolate ( which is bittersweet) . The crepe itself was neither here nor there .The chef’s menu changes weekly (every Wednesday) & perhaps luck is on my side that day thus the 3 dishes was rather disappointing and overpriced at $58++. How I wish they would introduce the Chilean seabass again…..

comfort italian food OK Jul 27, 2010

Categories : Italian | Restaurant | Pasta | Kids-Friendly

The exact location of Italiannies is well hidden in the sense that you would have to walk right to the end( walked past Imperial Treasure) and the restaurant is pretty small.

Italiannies offers a ‘Never Ending Lunch” which is only available from Mon- Fri (11.30-2.30pm) . It is a semi buffet lunch with never ending pastas, pizzas, desserts, main course + drinks priced at only $15.90nett. It think this is really worth the money and you get to sample all their dishes.

However, I doubt I would have the opportunity to drop by during weekdays thus I settled with their ala-carte.

They offer 2 types of bread- Focaccia and Tuscan which is baked freshly inhouse. They do sell the bread in loaves. Do get them if you enjoy it. I opted for the Focaccia as I prefer them to plain ciabatta. The bread is slightly on the dry side and the flavour of herbs is not that strong.

Caesar Salad with toasted focaccia croutons( $4.90++)

The portion for the salad is pretty generous. Romaine lettuce with their home made focaccia croutons and sprinkled with lots of parmesan cheese. I was not an avid fan of cheese thus I felt that there were too much cheese, making the salad a little heavy.

Parmesan Crusted Fish ($17.90++)

”Oven-baked Fish fillet, served over fried zucchini and red onion rings with white capers sauce”.

The dory fish is crumbed with parmesan and herbs, baked till golden brown. The parmesan crust wasn’t too salty but I thought it was rather bland. The fish itself is also bland (tasteless) , perhaps prior pre-seasoning would salvage .Those who enjoy fried onion rings would be overjoyed. The fried zucchini and red onion rings served along with the fish is addictive , crispy and not too oily. However, for health reasons, best to enjoy in small serving.

Verdict: They are pretty generous with the food portion which I guess it well worth every penny you paid for. The pizzas are pretty popular here and enjoy the freshly baked pizzas from the oven. I was very impressed with the service here. The staff were very prompt, efficient and courteous. I think Singapore needs more such people in the service and F& B industry!
