I had been to Eden Sanctuary at Club Street but ever since it has closed down, there wasn’t any news of Eden Sanctuary opening again in the vicinity of Chinatown.Actually I was there before Eden Sanctuary opened it’s doors. I did’t try their food at that time as the cafe looks small and dull, probably one of the places no one would have noticed. I realised that I had overlooked this ”hidden-gem”!

A mini garden

Even though the cafe was small , probably sit around 6 tables (you may have to share tables) , there is a mini garden right at the end. Well, some of the fruits , plants and flowers are used in the food.

The set lunch menu

They do offer a 2 or 3 course set lunch menu priced at $12.90 and $14.90, main course at $10.90 ( no ++).

Eden Sanctuary Salad ($9.90)

Without any further hesistation, I had their signature Eden Sanctuary Salad —– use the different 6 colours. the 6 colours were red, orange, green, white, blue and brown. It consists of orange slices, blueberries, mixed greens, cherry tomatoes and multi-grain bread, tossed in a citrus dressing. The dressing is very mild and refreshing. There were rose petals to act as garnishes and they can be eaten too!

Rosemary rose petal olive chicken ($16.90)

The chicken leg was marinated with rosemary and other herbs overnight before roasting to retain the juice. The meat was tender and juicy and infused with strong aroma of rosemary which I simply lovvve it! Even though I do not normally eat the skin of the chicken ( where the fats are found ), the skin was simply sooooo crispy that I can’t control myself.The juice from the chicken just flows out the moment I sliced the meat apart…. and that was super juicy and delicious! Highly recommended!

Modena Mousse cake ($2)
I was curious about this ”modena” moussecake due to the unique name. The chef challenged me to guess what it was after trying it. My first response after trying a little was ” tangy and has citrus flavour… erm… lemon cheesecake ? ” I was wrong and the answer he gave was Mousse cake made with Balsamic vingear and black pepper. This interesting combination was the chef’s own creation. This mousse cake is a very light dessert to end a meal.

The chef created some new flavours of the mooncake prepared some samples of the diners to try and provide feedback. Personally, I felt all the flavours taste quite similar but the Apricot with Grand Marnier stands out due to the tangy flavour. I am not at expert in eating mooncakes and in fact my family prefer the traditional baked five kernels mooncakes to the snowskin ones.

Verdict: Floral cuisine definitely worth a visit! I would be back for the rosemary chicken! A pity that the cafe was small and have limited seats and be there early to grab a seat!

Burgers Smile Sep 08, 2010

Categories : Burgers and Sandwiches

I’m sure ”burger lovers” would have been to Relish thus no further introduction needed.
If you fancy something interesting and are adventurous enough, give their burgers a try ! Their burgers have interesting names and have different combinations e.g Chicken Masak Merah burger and Ram-lee beef burger which you cannot find it elsewhere except at Relish. If burgers are not your cup of tea, try the pastas instead — Spicy conpoy & Hae Bee spaghetti , a fusion pasta dish with Asian influence.
There is a 2/ 3 course set lunch priced at $20++ and $22++ respectively. You can opt for either the burger or the pasta dish of the day.

Black cod burger ($15++)

*All burgers comes with either side salad/ fries
The Black cod burger is a new item to the menu. The black cod fillet is battered and deep-fried till golden brown. It was crispy on the outside & juicy on the inside. I just felt that the cod fillet was a little bland. The battered black cod fillet is sandwiched between the sesame buns ( warm and crusty ) , top with shredded lettuce and gherkins spread. You can ask for some dipping sauces ( chilli, mustard, mayo or tomato ) for your fries or eat it with the burger.
Battered cod fish with gherkins
*Crsipy skin + yummy gherkins spread…. delicious!!!*

Verdict: The buns were good , warm and crusty , patty is unique ( depends on what you order) the ambience is great and the service is fantastic! Worth a visit if you don’t mind paying $15 over bucks for a burger.

Fowl of Arabia Smile Sep 06, 2010

Pasta Stylo

From the name, you would have guessed that this place serves pasta. Well, the cafe is located at the corner and the gloomy and dark interior made the cafe mysterious.

Fowl of Arabia ($9.90++)
Original price ( $14.90++)
Whole chicken breast marinated withMoroccan spice and BBQ till the meat fully absorbed the flavour. The flavour is pretty strong and despite being BBQ-ed, the meat was tender and juicy. Personally, I like the strong flavour of herbs being used in the chicken breast , some of us might find it a little strong and taste weird. A light sesame mustard dressing is drizzled on the chicken breast ( not mayonnaise !)The salad served alongside has pasta too! Fafalle, fusilli and different shapes of pastas.

Crimson Sea ( $6.80++)

Original Price ( $9.80++)
Fancy some salmon sashimi? The presentation looks lovely but I was deceived by it’s looks …
The Salmon sashimi was icy cold, I guess they just took out from the fridge and was not thawed. The crimson sea was supposed to be served right after the side salad but they have forgotten the order when I reminded them, they quickly prepare this within 5mins! Thus, the standard was ….
The salmon sashimi was wrapped with a small stick of cucumber and avocado. Dip it with the wasabi dressing with caviar and it taste rather ok, just that it was icy cold.

Verdict : The fowl of Arabia was delicious and I would go back again for this dish. One of their signature pasta dish was the Chilli crab pasta which they served the whole mud crab with the Chilli crab sauce. I would try the next visit.

Spanish Tapas OK Sep 06, 2010
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Spanish | Hotel | Restaurant | Paella

The Menu

On weekdays , 12-2.30pm, they have a special promotion on their tapas ( choose any 3 tapas for $20++ but the choice is limited). The tapas are a little on the pricey side, price starting from $9 ++ onwards for a potato salad.
Popular dishes includes the Iberico ham , The garlic prawns and Cod croquette .

Ensalada Manchego ( $12++)

This is basically a mixed salad with Manchego cheese. The salad has a great mix of sunflower seeds, peanuts, walnuts, seeds of pomegranate , dried apricots , tomatoes and the shaving of Manchego Cheese.
The Manchego cheese is firm , has compact consistency , a buttery texture, and has a distinctive flavour, well developed but not too strong, creamy with a slight piquancy, and leaves an aftertaste that is characteristic of sheep’s milk.

Garlic prawns ($15 ++)
This is a crowd favourite! The prawns were sauteed with fragrant minced garlic and some herbs. Served together with 2 sliced of toasted bread for dipping.8 de-shelled prawns were sauteed with minced garlic and chilli. The prawns were addictive but a little on the oily side ( a thick layer of oil seen). They should have served garlic bread instead of plain baguette.
European cod, pea puree & confit mushrooms ($17++)
The European cod looks petite and promising. However, when I tried a little, it was way too salty. The cod itself was salted ( salt cod is popular in Northern Europe ) and I was not used to the saltiness thus I didn’t like it. The leek puree was smooth and I licked it clean.

Verdict: Having Tapas may cost even higher than a main course and often it doesn’t keep you full. Tapas are just little snacks to nibble on and great for accompanying with beers.
