Crepes OK Sep 23, 2010
Categories : European | Restaurant | Pasta

The Menu
They offer a range of appetitizers and salads.
The crepes are classified under different sections(savoury)- Vegetarian, Poultry, Fish& Seafood and Meat.
Sweet: Chocolate filled with bananas, tiramisu ….
For the crepes, choose from White, wholewheat or sun-dried tomato .

Fish Marsala ($16++)
” braised groper meat with marsala spices”
The crepes were soft and warm. It was filled with generously chunks of marsala groper meat & shredded lettuce. The only complain is that the fish smells fishy .

Asian Spice chicken breast salad ($12.50++)
Mum’s Asian Spice chicken breast was well-marinated with spices. The chicken meat was tender & juicy. They serve along some mango with lime dressing to go along with the chicken . However, I felt that the chicken breast was already well-marinated thus the dressing is a little unnecessary.
Verdict: It was rather difficult to get the attention of the staff due to the the crowd. Many are seen queueing up , waiting for a table. Business was good yet they are understaffed. The crepes were innovative but the fish marsala crepe that I had DID NOT passed.

Ulu location, so so food OK Sep 21, 2010
Categories : Singaporean Western | Brunch

It’s another Western grill restaurant located @ an ulu ulu place. Strangely, the restaurant was located along ” Jalan Malu Malu”which is behind Sembawang Shopping Centre ( right at the far end ) which you would have walk for about 5 mins to get there.
The restaurant is secluded & housed in a quiet environment. If you would like to enjoy lunch in a quiet place, without another disturbance, Flamingg Mangos is an ideal place.

Menu
They offer a range of starters but most of them are finger-foods ( deep-fried) which are popular with the crowd ( accompany with beer).
Different types of set lunch available as well which are reasonably priced @ around $12-$15.

I decided to try the restaurant’s speciality by choosing dishes from the ”Mangos Selections”.

Green salad

Some mixed veggies drizzled with light mayo, at least the mayo wasn’t too creamy.

*Poached salmon in rich fish broth, flash grilled with cajun dip ($23.90+)

*comes with mashed potatoes & the mixed salad

The salmon steak was overdone and the meat was tough. The cajun dip served alongside has a hint of spiciness & sort of a ”lemak” sauce . I felt that the salmon was not well-excueted and the sauce does not balance the salmon steak.

Apple pie ala mode with mango ice-cream ($6.90+)
I was given a choice to choose the ice-cream flavour. Auntie told me that their mango ice-cream is very popular and almost every diner would order it. I simply had to try it to believe her words.
The mango ice-cream has a mango-ey flavour and bits of mangoes in it, it was pretty decent. The apple pie, on the other-hand, failed miserably! I think they sourced the apple pie from some supplier . The apple pie had a thick and floury base, there were just a few small chunks of stewed apples and the rest were just flour.

Verdict: Ulu location , food is so-so, it depends whether you would like to give them a chance. Service is excellent ( thanks to auntie ). For me, I may have to reconsider.

Tasty but... overpriced OK Sep 20, 2010

Categories : Australian / New Zealand | Burgers and Sandwiches

Bergs , an aussie burger joint located at Far east Square. The ”burger” joint concept seemed to appeal to these exceutives working in the CBD areas. Burgers make a budget & quick lunch but it’s unhealthy….(not all)

Bergs is expanding!
The biz is thriving & they have another outlet @ Dunlop Street (little india ). It depends which outlet is more convenient for you & make your way there.

Take your number
They have a veg / non-veg burgers —- beef/ chicken/ tofu / falafel .
Choose the size : M ( 2 patties ), S( 1 patty)
Order your choice of burger at the counter, pay , take your number & take a seat to wait for your burgers to be served. The burgers were freshly made on the spot thus a minimum waiting time of 5-10 mins is required. Well, it also depends on the queue / crowd.

Doggy-bag

Irregardless of whether you are having the meal there / TA, they will serve the burger in a doggy-bag.

Budgie Smuggler S — ($10.60)

This is one of the their signature chicken burger. The burger was still warm when i took it out from the doggy-bag. The sesame bun was warm and soft and the chicken breast was well marinated . The juice of the chicken starts to drip all over … a mess! The burger has a hint of spiciness (sweet chilli) & light aioli .
Though the chicken patty was juicy and delicious, I still felt that it was over-priced for a small burger. For that price. I could easily have 2-3 burgers at CJ/ Macdonalds.

Unfresh ingredients OK Sep 20, 2010

Categories : American | Café | Burgers and Sandwiches | Salads/ Acai Bowl

From the shop name ”Tossz”, you would have guessed that this place offers food that has something got to do with tossing. That’s right, it’s a salad bar ! Salad bars are one of my favourite places for a quick and healthy lunch. As you know, I love my greens and I would love to explore the various salad bars in Singapore.

The various ingredients

I love to see the various ingredients displayed in front of me. The vegetables were so colourful and pleasing to the eyes. One thing for sure, I would NEVER include any nuts/ seeds in my salads!
At Tossez, you get to create your own salad / Pre-made selections. First, you would have to choose the base ( Mesclun salad / Romaine / Iceberg ) , choose any add-ins (min 5 ) & finally select the dressing you like. Add $0.30 to make into wraps.

My Creation ($9)
Mesclun salad as base , add-ins : Carrots, tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, lemon chicken slices and mangoes in Sundried tomato vinaigrette
Firstly, the mangoes were lumpy, soggy and unfresh . Secondly, the lemon chicken slices were dry and tasteless . Finally, could only see a few strips of sun-dried tomatoes. Compared to other salad bars, I felt that further improvement is required especially the portions and freshness of the ingredients. In addition, the staff seemed to look a little grumpy and displeased.

Ulu location Smile Sep 19, 2010

Categories : Australian / New Zealand | Café

Jules Cafe is well-hidden at a corner of Jalan Riang ( near to Nanyang JC) , I took a 5* mins walk in from Wolskel Road , perspiring under the scorching sun but that is worth every effort! When Dad told me he was going to Serangoon area, I thought of Jules immediately ( an Australian Cafe which I’ve been wanting to visit) .

* Duration may differ as I’m used to walking fast.

Jules Cafe is owned by Jules, who specialises in Contemporary Australian Cuisine. Jules is the only chef here and he makes this cafe like his own apartment ( his lovely daughters are there too).

Menu
The menu is a piece of paper placed on every table. Although there wasn’t much selection of starters & desserts, the mains look interesting. Having read reviews from HGW, I already made up my mind of what to have for lunch .

Green Salad with lots of veggies ($8)
The simple mesclun salad has cubes of baked pumpkin & chickpeas and finished off with a very light lemon vinaigrette.

Grilled Red snapper, mashed potatoes & veg salad ($23)
The cafe ran out of the ” * HARRISA CHICKEN BREAST WITH ORANGE” , thus I had the Grilled Snapper instead.
* Moroccan SpiceNO GST/ SVC charge here, all prices are nett.
The chef offers lots of veggies in replacement of the boring mashed potatoes. The Fish is fresh & well-grilled but I find it a little mild ( just add salt & pepper!!!). The roasted vegetables ( cubes of pumpkins, capsicums, mushrooms & zucchini )were bursting with flavours, I enjoyed it !

Verdict: The trip to Jules was fruitful, the food here is not exceptionally good but I can feel Jules sincerity when he prepares the dishes. The cafe is located in an ulu place , it’s so quiet & peaceful …. I can relax & enjoy a delicious meal without any disturbance. Shrrhhh….. I wanna keep this as a secret.
P.S I would be back for the ”Harrisa Chicken Breast with orange”
