Value for money sashimi! Smile Jul 11, 2010
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Fish Mart Sakuraya used to be located at Ginza Plaza, before they moved out to the Village Centre. But with the re-opening of West Coast Plaza and closing of the Village Centre, Sakuraya has now moved back to its old place but at the ground floor. As they are extremely value for money Japanese food, Sakuraya is always packed with families, forming long queues.

Food is typical Japanese food, but they specialise in sashimi, which are located in chill display cabinets for customers to select and hand over to the staff which will prepare them. Besides that, Sakuraya also has a lot of grilled fish items, and tempura food as well. This wide selection of dishes should appeal to most people.

Wasabi Tei OK Jul 11, 2010
Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Wasabi Tei is a small little Japanese eatery located at the top floor of Far East Plaza, located in one of the back shop corridors. The eatery has only a tiny number of limited seats so there is usually a queue that forms outside Wasabi Tei quickly once it opens. but despite the limited seating, turnover rate is generally quick enough for the queue to move.

Wasabi Tei serves a variety of Japanese set meals, ranging from sushi sets to hotpot sets. One of their favourite dishes is the salmon sashimi which is served with thick slices. Another favourite dish is the chiraishi don which is a mix of various types of sashimi. The codfish hotpot is also a customer favorite!

Kurobuta Ramen! Smile Jul 09, 2010
Categories : Japanese

Tampopo was one of the early ramen joints to hit Singapore, together with their famous black pork bone ramen. This is one ramen that I really love because of how rich the soup stock tastes. You can literally slurp it all till it's gone! Besides ramen, Tampopo also serves a wide range of Japanese food as well, from omurice to tempura.

To supplement my ramen, I also ordered their mixed tonkatsu platter, which had fish, prawns, pork and ham all breaded and fried. Very delicious! Many families come here to eat because of the wide spread of food and also the clean environment and good service. This place is highly recommended for value for money Japanese fare!

Brunch at Wild Honey Smile Jul 09, 2010
Categories : Western Variety | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Brunch

Wild Honey has a rather cozy and homey feel to it, like a warm brick home. Interestingly, the waitresses are all dressed in a uniform that vaguely calls to mind milkmaids or farmhands. It was rather packed and we had to wait for about 20 mins even though we came only 1 hour after it opened. But despite the number of people, it wasn’t too noisy unlike other places where you cannot even hear your friends talk.

My friend and I ordered the European breakfast, which consisted of eggs benedict, mushrooms and prosciutto. This was one of the best egg benedicts I have eaten so far!
Look at that delicious egg oozing out, flowing almost like a waterfall over the prosciutto, which added its salty flavour to the eggs. There was also some herb-grilled mushrooms adding complexity to the dish and this was all put on top of a thick slice of soft garlic bread. The combination is just heavenly and I really finished off the 2 pieces of eggs benedict way too fast!

The other friend had the Japanese breakfast which consists of salmon omelette balls, Japanese rice, and salad with wasabi mayo. I didn’t get a chance to try it but my friend was making sounds of joy so I assume it was pretty good as well!

The breakfasts at Wild Honey are exceptional and I really wish I could have had seconds, but at least now I have an excuse to come back again for more!

Lunch at Cugini Smile Jul 09, 2010

Categories : Italian | Restaurant | Pasta | Pizza

There is this little Italian place called Cugini located at 87 Club Street which was highly recommended for its pasta so I decided to go and give it a try. It was definitely the right choice because the pasta was amazing. Not surprised since it was made by 2 Italians called Mauro and Gerri.

I had penne alla carbonara, which was simply superb. The best carbonara pasta I have ever eaten. The sauce was so tasty that I licked it off my spoon and penee is the right choice of pasta because the sauce gets inside the hollow area and it’s great to burst out when you put it in your mouth.

The sauce itself was special, possibly because of the pepper and herbs. And it was topped of by some imported Italian bacon known as guanciale, which is the cured pork cheek. It’s even better than pancetta when fried!

And also a Cugini Special pizza. Fresh tomatoes, mozzeralla, tomino cheese, rocket and guanciale made up this pizza. Completely different from the pizzas that I was used to from Pizza Hut and the like. This one taste real good, because of the dough and the tomatoes and the cheese. Simple ingredients but powerful combination!
