The angry burger Smile Dec 31, 2010   (Related Review)

Categories : Portuguese | Steaks and Grills

Nando's is about tasting and trying every chicken creation that they have.

So this time, I ordered the Angry Mango Burger. I don't know why this burger is angry, but it's definitely pleasing me. The little spiciness of the grilled chicken paired with sweet mango cubes make this a splendid burger!

As mentioned before, there are 4 flavours for the chicken, and this time, I tried the Mild flavour. A little spicy, but the spiciness did not mask the original taste of the chicken.

New sidelines that I tried during this visit were Cous Cous Salad and Coleslaw. Not my top favourites, especially the cous cous, which were fine bits with weird taste.

Though some dishes were not to my liking, at least I'd embarked on a unique food journey experience!

Come back buffet! Smile Dec 31, 2010

The City Square outlet is the only Pu Tien outlet that offers buffet for their Heng Hwa cuisine.

During my 3rd and chance outing there, I was astonished to find out that they would be terminating their buffet in a few days' time! No reason was given. How sad! Though the buffet will no longer be available, the dishes can still be ordered ala carte.

Appetisers on the buffet line were salted chicken, prawns, pork, jellyfish, crabmeat, fish and marinated winter melon. I love the crabmeat with corn paste best!

The main dishes that we ordered:
Scallop with Vermicelli - chewy and springy and tastes so good with garlic and spring onion!

Seafood Roll with Fruit Salad - Crispy and hot on the outside, but sweet inside. Wonderful when dipped into mayonnaise!

Chilli Live Mussels

The "Golden Flower" Fish - The fish is so tender and makes me want to pluck off the strips, dip into the savoury sauce and savour each strip bit by bit!

Stir-Fried Yam lol

Stir-Fried Kai-Lan with Beancurd Skin - A downside: More beancurd skin than kai lan

Fried "Hing Wa" Bee Hoon - A mixture of ingredients in this fried rice noodles dish! Very delightful!

Double-Boiled Duck Soup (limited to 1 portion per pax)

Shrimp Dumpling Soup with Pork - Served in a mini paper steamboat. The shrimp dumplings were shrivelled, little meat but nice soup!

Desserts available were fruity jelly, chocolate cake, kueh, sweet potato balls.

Looking at the pictures makes me drool!

The buffet is very affordable considering the high prices that you have to pay if you were to order ala carte. Pls bring back the buffet!

Steamboat and BBQ Smile Dec 31, 2010

Han River Table BBQ is a Halal restaurant that serves smoke-free buffet BBQ cum steamboat.

There is a variety of food items for the soup and various kinds of marinated chicken, fish and beef for barbequing. Similar to Seoul Garden.

What caught my eye was the fried food section. Onion rings, prawn balls, nuggets, wantons and crispy noodles! Taste-wise, disappointing. The onion rings fall apart easily and the nuggets were a little tough. But I still had the crispy wantons and prawn balls! I hardly touched the seafood section as although I ate quite little, I was feeling full already and had to allocate space for dessert.

I didn't order any drinks so I made my own - taking pineapple cubes and liquid from the ice kachang section and filling the bowl with ice, so I get a bowl of pineapple juice! Tropical drink!

Two types of ice-cream are offered here - in cups and potong! The cup ice-cream was creamy and the potong ice-cream brought back fond memories of eating it in the past. Sweet!

Local cuisine Smile Dec 31, 2010

After shopping at Tangs, it's gratifying to know that within the mall houses a cafe serving tired and hungry souls.

We ordered one of the Island's Specials for that month, Crispy Fish Noodle Soup ($16), which includes dessert (tau suan) and coffee/tea. The chef has considerately separated the fish fillet from the noodle soup to retain the crispiness of the fish. Thick vermicelli is served for this dish, along with a milky broth. However, the soup tasted bland, thus minus points for the dish. But bring on fried onions and spring onions for soup toppings anytime! One plus point for the fish is that it is thinly coated with batter, so I could still taste the smooth texture of the fish.

The other main dish we ordered was Hainanese Pork Chop Rice ($14). This is the better dish of the two. Average rice and vegetables, but the dish was glorified by the crispy pork strips. I could eat many of these with the tangy tomato sauce on them! lol

Caesar Salad (with Lemongrass Chicken) ($12): Fresh simple salad dish comprising of hard-boiled eggs, tomatoes and lemongrass chicken on a bed of greens. Refreshing and tasty!

For such fare, the prices are set too high but can't blame them as this outlet is more catered to tourists.

Tasteful Cantonese cuisine Smile Dec 31, 2010

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hotel | Dim Sum

I had a voucher to dine here and was deciding to just order fried rice and dessert. But after reading raving reviews about this establishment, I wanted to try some of their signature dishes. Well, take it as a pampering treat for my mum and me!

There were not many people when I went there, perhaps reason being it was a weekday. We were shown to our seats, which were by the window where we could see the pool. The seats were comfortable, with a pillow for my back. Although we were suggested by the staff to order tea, it seems that at such a classy Chinese restaurant, ordering tea is sort of a must, so we ordered chrysanthemum tea. You could request the level of sweetness for the tea or choose to put the sugar yourself. The tea was crystal clear and it was such a relaxing sight to watch the shiny teaspoon stirring the sugar in the tea.

First up, free appetizer! Carrot with lotus root. The carrot is sweet, tasted raw. Lotus root is bland though.

We ordered 3 main dishes. The Braised Homemade Beancurd with Spinach and Crabmeat ($24) looked like a snow island masterpiece due to the chunks of crab meat flooding the entire dish. There's actually spinach underneath the beancurd. The beancurd was smooth, there's solid crab meat pieces and top all this with savoury sauce! Mmmmm...chopstick

Wok Fried Crocodile Meat and Celery with Spicy Sauce ($42): Though I was reluctant to order this dish due to its cost, eventually I ordered it as I wanted to try their crocodile meat. And I didn't regret it one bit! The crocodile meat was sliced thinly, thus I was popping slice after slice into my mouth! There were few mushrooms as well, so it was akin to treasure hunting, finding for the mushrooms and popping them into my mouth with the crocodile meat to excite my taste buds! I even ate lots of celery pieces!

Usually I would prefer to eat the dishes with rice, so we left some portions for later consumption and waited. But it turned out that we actually need not wait at all, since the rice could be eaten on its own. The Eight Treasure Fried Rice ($28) comprises of white and brown rice mixed together, and cooked in a claypot with beancurd, spring onion and meat which I presumed was barbequed pork but the staff claimed it wasn't. Anyway, I couldn't make out what items were in this dish that the staff mentioned, but it doesn't matter, so long as it tastes superb!

For desserts, we had the Chilled Fresh Mango Puree with Sago ($8) and the Chilled Yam Pudding ($7). Mango puree was never a disappointment. There were yam cubes in the pudding, which had a stronger yam taste than the pudding itself. Atop of the pudding were 3 pieces of dragon fruit balls and mint leaf.

I was delighted when the staff gave us 2 red bean pastries and said that it was on the house! The pastry was crisp, red bean paste was sweet and the sesame seeds were fragrant. Lovely petite pastries!

Prices are on the high end but I guess you are paying for good value.
