Dinner Over at Toa Payoh Central Cry Dec 02, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Roasted Meat

We decided to have our dinner over at this hawker/restaurant stall named “Hiang Ji Roasted Meat & Noodle House” at one corner of the back lane outside Toa Payoh HDB as the staff is very persistent in getting us to dine at their place and since I saw that there are quite a lot of customer eating at this place, we thought that their food should be quite nice to eat.

The restaurant is actually a stand alone hawker stall with their own sets of tables and chairs. We looked through the menu and started to order our dish. Overall, the staff are very attentive and is quick to answer our queries and request.
Duck Rice

Duck Rice

Very bad choice to eat at this place as the rice is very hard. Should be never put enough water to cook or taken out before it is fully cooked. Meat wise is even worst!!! There are not much edible meat given but mostly is bones while the meat texture is quite tough and when you eat, you could even eat or bite into some crushed bones (Though the duck did taste nice) which gives an overall bad dining experience at this stall. There are no side soup given as what other duck rice stall would do and I think the only good thing is their sauce.
Duck Noodle

Duck Noodle

The duck meat for the noodle is a bit better but mostly is fatty skin while lower is all bones again. (The duck must be a very thin as they do not have much meat to be eaten). Noodle wise, is very dry and not really nice to eat.
Chicken Noodle

Chicken Noodle

Chicken noodle in terms of meat is much much better than the roasted duck rice / noodle but there are not much taste from this dish.
Vegetable in Oyster Sauce

Vegetable in Oyster Sauce

The chef did put a lot of fried garlic and fried Lard onto it

Japanese Style Fa Cai Yu Sheng @ $36.80

Japanese Style Fa Cai Yu Sheng @ $36.80

What will be a Chinese New Year Dinner be without Fa Cai Yu Sheng. I loves Japanese Yu Sheng more than the Chinese style as I can get to eat fresh fish (Sashimi) while the Chinese style might not be able to compare with the freshness (and thickness too).
The Fa Cai Yu Sheng consist of a few vegetables including some Japanese side dishes like scallop skin which is also another of my favorite dish when I eat at Japanese Restaurant.
Salmon Salad @ $9.00

Salmon Salad @ $9.00

Fresh salmon cues are being mixed together with fresh vegetables which mostly consist of lettuces and special Japanese sauce to make the overall taste nice and healthy. There are 3 choices of dressing to choose from mainly:

-Sushi Tei Dressing
-Wafuu Dressing
-Sesame Dressing
Salmon Head Shio (Half) @ $8.00

Salmon Head Shio (Half) @ $8.00

This dish is freshly grilled half fish head with just salt though it does not taste salty at all. As expected of Sushi Tei, the dish is nicely grilled with juicy meat and crispy skin.
Salmon Ikura Oyako Don @ $16.00

Salmon Ikura Oyako Don @ $16.00

Out of so many Japanese restaurants which I had tried having this dish, I rated Sushi Tei the best in my case as the Salmon sashimi is placed nicely while the big and juicy salmon roe is given with a generous serving. I loves the taste of their sushi rice in it which is the main reason why I love this dish.
Chuka Chinmi (Scallop skin) @ $5.20

Chuka Chinmi (Scallop skin) @ $5.20

As usual, I will order this dish to eat as I love the freshness (Cold and great texture) but must remember to inform the staff that you wish to have it freshly made rather than get it from the convey belt.

Minced raw tuna and spring onion are being placed on top of sushi rice instead of normal Japanese rice. You can either mixed everything together before eating or eat it based on your preference.

This is more of a sweeter type of sushi roll due to the additional of mayonnaise on it before serving with slices of avocado on top of each sushi using Tan Tan Meat (Center) topped with Crab Meat and Avocado (Top)

One of the specially dish created by Sushi Tei Holland Village Branch. Oyster are being steamed and made into sushi roll using Cucumber slice to wrap it instead of normal seaweed. Great for 1 or 2 but taste a bit over-powering if you are trying to eat more than that.

After work, me and my friends meet at Orchard MRT and walked to Paragon where PS Cafe is located at level 3 of the building. Actually we thought that the cafe is actually at the walkway next to the escalator but the staff bring us into a retail store and there is another part of the cafe within hidden in the retail store called “Project Shop” selling stylish bags. This is quite a surprise and the environment inside is also quite different from the outside seats too. I would say the inside of the cafe is more cozy and romantic due to dim lighting.

There are candle lighted at every table which makes the surrounding feels much comfortable with some magazines hanging at the divider
Truffle Shoestring Fries @ $15.00

Truffle Shoestring Fries @ $15.00

They are generous with the fries and every fries are covered with truffle smell and taste. Not to mention, there are some thin slices of cheese sprinkle on top of the fries. Very nice indeed as the fries are freshly made and very crispy.
PS. Burger Club @ $28.00

PS. Burger Club @ $28.00

The burger is using Pan Seared Wagyu and US Chuck Patty for the burger stacked with cheese and etc before cutting it into 4 parts on 1 stick. The whole dish comes with some salad and BBQ spiced rustic Potatoes.
Grilled Chicken Burger Club @ $25.00

Grilled Chicken Burger Club @ $25.00

The chicken meat are being minced before mixing it and some other ingredients and shape it into a patty again. From my point of view, it does not suit my taste as I felt that I am eating chicken meat mixed with Asian style Otak. (A bit spicy but acceptable)

Its been a while since I last met up with my ex-colleague cum buddies over for a dinner and chat up on recent activities so we took this chance to meet up with each other over at Lavender Food Square (Or some called it “Eminent Food Centre”) which one of them want to introduce to me the food being sold there.

We took public transport (MRT) to Lavender MRT station before walking about 10 to 15 minutes to reach our destination. This place looks a lot like Lau Pa Sat located in the CBD area and there are quite a lot of people visiting this place too.

Chong Pang Huat stall which sell Chicken wings and satay over at this place is one of the recommended stall by 2 of my friends but to me, it is good but not good enough as I still think the ones I had eaten over at Jurong East still taste much better than this stall.
Chicken Wings @ $1.20 per wing

Chicken Wings @ $1.20 per wing

The chicken wings are not evenly barbeque to nice color while the skin looks a bit old. The meat are a bit dry and not really juice type.
Satay @ $0.50 per stick

Satay @ $0.50 per stick

The satay taste better as the meat is quite tender with some parts being burned. (It should be meant to be this way too).
Satay Peanut Sauce

Satay Peanut Sauce

The sauce are given using a small bowl and you can request for more if you order a lot of satay from the stall.

We bought some dim sum from the Ju Hao stall and they really give a lot of pieces in one single order. We are quite surprise that there are so many and is quite full after having these in our stomach.
Pan-Fried Dumpling

Steam Dumplings

Xiao Long Bao

Xiao Long Bao

The meat in it is very juicy but I think the skin of the Xiao Long Bao is a bit too thick (Maybe they scare the juice will leak out?) and not really that great.
Popiah

Popiah

They bought some poh piah too which I think is quite nice (Not great) as I had eaten a better ones out there. It is still good for dinner to fill up your stomach if you want.

There are a lot of people around in IMM by the time we reached there and almost all the restaurants are queuing with customers but when we reached the Coffee Club restaurant, there are not much people inside the restaurant but since we are there, we just proceed into the restaurant and start to look through the menu before ordering our dishes.
Skipper’s Delight Penne @ $14.50

Skipper’s Delight Penne @ $14.50

This dish which is a pasta type and it seems that the fish is not very fresh (Had some fishy smell).
Honey Glazed Chicken @ $17.20

Honey Glazed Chicken @ $17.20

The chicken is very small in size which is placed on top of mashed potato. The chicken is spread with a thick layer of their special sauce which looks something like mustard but taste consist of lime and bits of spicy (Should be suitable for kids) but the chicken meat is not as good as it seems that the meat is not tender at all and kind of hard. (I think foodcourt western food taste better than here).

The only good thing is there is available seats around for a nice chat (Just purchase their drinks or simple finger food will do) and they do put in their heart to nicely design the dishes before serving it to you.
