Healthy Rice Balls Smile Sep 30, 2013

Categories : Taiwanese

Been wanting to try and finally did. As it is our first time, we bought those off-the-shelf onigiri look-alike breakfast and snack rice rolls that comes in different sizes, big or small. We left it for hours before consuming and though it is cold, the taste is delectable.

I remember having this type of snack rice rolls in Taipei's 7-11 store and it requires you to wrap your rice rolls on your own with the seaweed provided. It is easy as the folds of the rice roll's shape is there already.

All 3 rice rolls of different flavours mainly Smoked Duck, Emperor Veg and Gua Zai Meat are nice and tasty, with the latter two of them being Vegetarian. Every bite of the rice rolls are so soft, the aroma from within just coming bursting out little by little. Also it is made with different types of rice that combines the health benefits which you can get from it. And different rolls give you different surprise as in their different types of fillings. Maybe you can try going along with their drinks or desserts. I'm gonna try others in their menu very soon.

Pan-Fried Kuehs Smile Aug 10, 2013

Categories : Teochew | Hawker Centre

I lived here for more than a decade and I hardly go to the hawker centre which is just 5 minutes from my block. And I even heard about this stall from my friend. Feel so ashamed. But now then I got my hands on the nicest Peng Kueh and Soon Kueh, gonna have as much as I like.

This stall is quite popular from the long queue which you can see. The kuehs are all made, steamed and pan-fried on the spot. So I can say that their kuehs are the freshest. I used to have it the traditional way which is the steamed version but here, they can pan-fry for you. And pan-frying seems to enhance the taste further. It is so delicious when you dip in the dark sauce or chilli. Marvellous. The fillings are generous. How can you just have one of each? But quite stuffed after each a piece. The price is quite reasonable for such nice local kuehs. Try it the pan-fried way and have it while it's hot.

BreadTalk's Birthday Promo Smile Aug 01, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Bakery

It's BreadTalk's 13th Birthday and to celebrate this special occasion, all their buns are going at $10 for 10 buns! Awesome isn't it? The promotion ends yesterday and probably I'm in lady luck so happen to know about it and head down to join the fun of buying their different types of buns. In additional, a free bun was given before the cashier hand me my purchase.

Out of 10 buns, I had 3 of them. The overall texture of their buns are commendable as it is soft and tears easily apart.

Croissant

The croissant was decent and nothing to write home about. However there was a strong flavour of butter coming from it, which exactly how a good croissant should be.

Sausage Bun

There was a variety of flavours bursting out every mouthful. I can taste the bits of sweetness on the outside but then it seems to be infused with herbs on the bun making process. And then the sausage within combines perfectly overall.

Curry Bun

The taste of their bun is just so similar to the sausage bun. However what differentiates the two is that this curry bun has fillings of curry puff. I can taste the small cubes of potato within the fillings infused with curry herbs, I suppose it should be that way.

As this is bought during their promotion, I hardly see any display of each of the bun's name so I tasted each of them with my own judgment and preference.

I'm not a regular customer of BreadTalk but once awhile, it is definitely a good treat for me and my family to taste those awesome buns of theirs.

Shredded Chicken Hor Fun Smile Jul 15, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hainanese | Coffeeshop | Chicken Rice

I guess I have tried almost all the items in their menu and to date, the taste and portion of their food remains good ever since I started working at NUS. Although I stall-hopped every now and then but when there is short or zero queue at their stall, what first comes to my mind was their Shredded Chicken Hor Fun.

At the price of $2, you get a good amount of hor fun to fill your stomach plus vegetables, shredded chicken and slices of mushroom. Please do not mistaken that this food item has nothing special. Apart from the black soya sauce that was used, they add gravy to the mushroom which also blends into the hor fun itself too for us to mix it well. The hor fun on the other hand is so smooth and actually absorb the gravy into it. You can slurp it up so easily.

The hor fun that we usually had outside are thin but bigger in size and usually have it dry with gravy or just fried hor fun. Here they use a smaller in size kind of hor fun, smaller than kway teow in fishball noodles. It is easier to eat.

I will definitely recommend every single item in their menu. From $1- $2, you can fill your stomach for a good 4-5 hours before your dinner, even without adding additional sides to it.

Laksa Yong Tau Foo Smile Jul 08, 2013
Categories : Singaporean Chinese

The difference between their Laksa and Laksa Yong Tau Foo will be the latter not having any tau pok. But in order to minimise the damage for a sinful lunch, I opt for Laksa Yong Tau Foo which I select 8 items at $2 plus $0.30 for noodles and $0.30 for Laksa gravy only. This is still quite affordable as compared with those at food centres. Or if you want to have purely Laksa (with noodles and tau pok), it costs only $1.80/$2.00. Usually they will cook all the selected food items plus noodles first and then pour in the gravy. Even so the laksa gravy is quite concentrated and the noodles (yellow noodles) actually absorb the taste and it is very delicious. But you will tend to feel a little bit thirsty after that so do drink water to gush out the unavoidable sodium it has for the overall. The food items do contribute to the saltiness sometimes.
