This one's no black sheep! Smile Oct 24, 2013

Bar Bar Black Sheep at Cluny Court has got to be one of the most charming, tucked away places in Bukit Timah away from the prying eyes of passers-by. It's quite difficult to find, there's a narrow walkway into an alfresco courtyard, but you can also opt for indoor seating.

The entire place is gorgeous, charming and has a really laid back feel to it. Not to mention, the stunning array of food choices here that include Asian (local), Thai and Western food -the menu is mind-bogglingly extensive! Also: they have great happy hour prices all day: $10 nett for house pour spirits, $8 for Kronenbourg 1664/Blanc as well as champagne. What was that ?-I can't hear you over the sound of chugging!

We ordered a Spaghetti Carbonara and a Chicken Pad Thai for $12.90 each, a Kronenbourg 1664 and a House Pour Rum & Coke for $8 and $10 respectively.

The carbonara is really creamy -a bit too thick and creamy for my liking, but bacon fans would enjoy this tremendously for the flavour of the bacon completely permeates this dish (yum!). There's a slightly smoky element to this dish that is complemented by the creaminess. I found it a bit much though -then again I cannot be said to be a fan of cream-based pasta.

The Pad Thai was surprisingly good! The noodles had a slightly springy/elastic quality which was delicious -there definitely was wok hei and the seasonings were done to perfection. I loved the crushed peanuts and chilli flakes on the side -not to mention a hint of lime to add the extra 'oomph'! I must say that the freshness of the chicken was remarkable. The meat had a fantastically tender quality that was neither dry nor flaky -top marks for this aspect.

Nothing like a cold glass of Kronenbourg 1664 to round off your day smile Fans of Hoegaarden and Erdinger (as I am) will enjoy this beer as its incredibly smooth -the aftertaste also carries a hint of fruitiness in my opinion. Easy to drink and chill out with

The rum & coke tends to fluctuate a little between glasses -its sometimes stronger when different bartenders mix it.

We really enjoyed the whole atmosphere -for a sports bar, it had a charming quality to it amidst the liveliness. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone bringing someone on a date to somewhere different that isn't pretentious yet definitely classy. The atmosphere is nearly electric in this one and the service is pretty good too. The best part is that the prices are all nett so what you see is what you get! With such a stunning variety of dishes to try, we can't exactly recommend a particular dish given that we've only tried two, but it appears to us that the burgers seem quite popular, as well as the side dishes to share!

Fish & Chips OK Oct 21, 2013

Chops & Chips at Vivocity offers a moderate range of western cuisine with the run of the mill fish & chips, chicken chops & cutlets as well as spaghetti. (They also offer set promos such as a soup add on for $1 etc)
The fish & chips is $6.50, and most of the chops and chips are around this price range.

$6.50 gets you a a decent sized breaded fish, coleslaw and a really large portion of fries! The fries are freshly fried so its crisp on the outside and super hot and fluffy on the inside. When left to cool however, it gets a bit hard and chewy but no matter, the generous portion more than makes up for it. The fish is slightly chewy -I would have liked it to be flakier and lighter. The outside is nicely breaded (i prefer breaded fish to battered!) and coated evenly.
I would have liked the coleslaw to be less creamy though -it bordered on an overload of creaminess together with the sauce for the fish which was equally milky and creamy.

The fish & chips weren't extraordinary but it was a decent portion for the price you pay.

Curry yong tau foo Smile Oct 11, 2013

Categories : Hakka | Chinese | Food Court

Original Delights YTF @ Nex has a wide range of fresh, handmade, YTF pieces that promise to evoke the 'reminiscent feelings' of good old yong tau foo! it's min 7 pieces for $5.20 with your choice of noodles and an extra 80c for curry gravy.

This is the curry ytf with chu mi fen -I admit for a food court @ Nex its a bit pricey at $6 (considering its around the same price for a bowl in town!), but it's a pretty big bowl so you can be assured that it'll really fill you!

The curry gravy doesn't taste like laksa for this one, and the taste of curry powder is quite distinct. It's not too thick so you can drink the gravy on its own (you can always run it off later, this stuff is too good to miss out on!) I recommend having tau pok to go w this so it soaks up the gravy and the flavour bursts when you sink your teeth into it! I also had some steamed fish(?) paste in beancurd skin -this one had bits of carrots in it so the crunch was rly pleasant.

The ingredients are fresh, the curry gravy isn't too spicy, and the portion is substantial -recommended for anyone in nex craving a hot, soupy meal!

BEST! Smile Oct 08, 2013

Blackball Dessert is by far the best asian cold dessert I've had in Singapore (even in comparison to the HK desserts!) and i've been having a craving for blackball for way too long!

Blackball @ the Star Vista is great cus there are alfresco seats for you to enjoy the dessert and the best part about blackball is the impeccable variety -milk tea, blackball icy, blackball supreme etc. I definitely recommend the Blackball Signature because it really gives you the best of, well, all worlds! w yam and sweet potato balls/Q which are really starchy and tasty and oh-so-addictive.

At $5.20, blackball signature with icy grass jelly (in my opinion) beats all the others hands down! The red bean, ice and grass jelly goes perfectly with the chewiness of the yam and sweet potato balls. My favourite (strangely) has to be the milk. The milk really gives this dessert a creamy and rich taste which I surprisingly loved! Blackball seems to be the oddest and strangest combination of *everything* and yet it just clicks so effortlessly. Definitely recommend this to anyone who hasn't tried it.

P.s. I can never finish one portion so you may wanna share w a friend smile

Red Ramen Smile Oct 08, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

I had an intense ramen craving at 9pm and Menya Musashi seemed like the most natural option in vivocity -I've been to Menya Musashi several times and I've tried all 3 of their ramen soup bases- white, red and black (which I did not like because it was too thick and "heaty" for me!).

I ordered a Red Chasu Ramen ($12.90) and this comes with 2 pieces of charsiew. There are other options where you can add on side dishes (like gyozas, etc) as well as add on char siew.

The Red Ramen seems to be more flavoursome than the white one, but also less thick than the black -plus point is that it carries a substantial, flavoursome spiciness. The charsiew has a slightly charred fragrance to it and its braised fattiness makes the meat tenderly slide off from the fats. I would have liked it with a bit more sweetness to complete the flavour though. The noodles are also a bit too cooked for me -they weren't as springy as I imagined them to besad But I did like that there were bamboo shoots in the ramen, giving a lovely contrast to the textures.

The decor here has really nice touches, from the tray for the soup bowls, the details on their bowls and walls, as well as the notices which are also provided in the japanese language. Also, service at menya musashi isn't too bad, and the price is reasonable too. If you're going for the first time, I do recommend the red ramen smile
