Yet another ice-cream parlour just found its way here. Twenty Grammes is a new ice-cream parlour that was into its second day of operations when we made our way there. Apart from a variety of ice-cream flavours offered here, they also offer tea and coffee for beverages, as well as cakes (from Ply Baked Goods) and pies (from Windowsill Pies) here.

Decided to skip on the cakes and pies because I had tried them before, so we went straight for a waffle with ice-cream ($9.50). I had a go with a few non-chocolate flavours such as the Affogato (Coffee flavoured ice-cream with Vanilla) as well as the Honey-Scotch, but we settled for the Macademia. Their ice-cream was creamy and smooth, even being slightly sticky as well, and the Macademia flavour was reasonably sweet with specks of Macademia nuts thrown in for a crunch. Waffles were a wee bit on the dense side, and they use the classic egg and butter batter here. Was not particularly crisp, but was slight fluffy and rather decent actually.

Another option in Hougang OK Nov 04, 2014

Despite being a heartland cafe, Flavour Flings seemed to have nothing short of other cafes situated in town when it comes to its interior fittings. Walk in the glass door and you would be greeted by a concave flooring that is filled up by pebbles with wood planks to step on. Cemented walls had textural designs, and the plain walls were made alive with paintings of people. It just gives us a refreshing environment, especially when these days everyone seemed to be jumping up on the industrial-themed bandwagon. The menu is pretty varied here, ranging from poached eggs, baked eggs, omelettes to pasta and pancakes. There are also a number of plated desserts to indulge in as well.

My dining partner decided to go for The Awesome One ($11); pancakes with salted caramel, bananas and walnuts. Drenched in a generous serving of Salted Caramel, the pancakes absorbed that sweet-salty goodness that was in perfect ratio; not too sweet, but not too salty as well. There was also a crisp consistency around the edges of the Pancakes, though it was a tad thin and we actually expected a stack of three instead of two for its price. My dining partner still found it filling though; the bananas seemed to have done the trick there.

Settling for my baked eggs craving, I went for the Atlantic Shirlled Eggs ($16); essentially baked eggs in cream sauce with smoked salmon and spinach, served with toast alongside. The toast had a crisp skin, and when coupled with a portion of the Atlantic Shirlled Eggs were comforting; simple yet delightful. The cream sauce was able to give the eggs sufficient savouriness, though sometimes it gets overwhelming with the smoked salmon. Appreciated the spinach added though; it provided a good break in between when it gets slightly too overpowering.

My dining partner and I decided to go with the Creme Brulee ($7) for dessert. This was pretty impressive; a crackling melted sugar layer on the top that cracks with a knock of a spoon that reveals sweet, eggy goodness within. Their version seemed to trump even those from hotel buffets which I have tried lately that seemed to had uninspiring liquid sugar seated atop the custard layer.

Mediocre at best OK Oct 16, 2014
Categories : Thai | Halal | Zi Char

Part of the P2E Group, Segar Restaurant which is known for similar tzechar concepts such as West Co’z Cafe and A-Poh Kitchen. Menu revolves around tzechar favourites, and a small selection of desserts as well.

First to arrive the table was Sambal Kang Kong. Mediocre at best, the only problem we had with it was the initial saltiness of the dish, but dig in more and the spiciness will eventually start to sink in.

Fu Yong Omelette came with crisp edges and a fluffy interior. What left us slightly confused was the runny consistent in the centre; was it left that way deliberately or not cooked through? Apart from that, we also found that they were pretty miserable with the condiments inside as well.

Sweet and Sour Fish Slices were also a wee bit miserable in portion. While the sweet and sour sauce was mediocre at best, its worth noting that the fish was fresh and the fried batter was really crispy despite doused in sauce.

We love Salted Egg Yolk Prawns, but the gravy was not thick enough as the flavour seemed to stop short somewhere. Also, the gravy was not really mixed onto the prawns, leaving both ingredients very much on their own. Did not find the wetness of the prawns particularly appealing as well.

For a sweet end, we went with the Steamed Tapioca. Served chilled, the softened Tapioca pieces absorbed the thick coconut milk, which made it pretty flavourful and appropriate as the sweet treat to end the meal.

Chic-A-Boo V.2 OK Oct 16, 2014

Categories : American | Fast Food

Chic-A-Boo is apparently yet another brand that is set up by the same owners behind Aston’s; apparently a fact that I only recently learnt about after reading a Facebook post by ieatishootipost, which probably told us why it actually was located beside an Aston’s Express stall when it was in Ang Mo Kio. The menu at the HillV2 outlet did seem pretty similar to the Ang Mo Kio one, and while prices still remain rather affordable there seems to be a rough increase about a dollar for all the sets.

Given that I had tried Set 1 ($7.90) previously at Ang Mo Kio, we decided to go for it again to see if they had made any improvements along with its move. The same deal goes; two sides, a corn muffin and two chicken parts with a soft drink. Chic-A-Boo does not allow their patrons to choose chicken parts, so you would have to do with a Drumstick and a Breast for Set 1. What’s good though is that you can mix flavours, which means you can actually order both Favourite and Hot ‘n’ Spicy in one set. Of the two, I preferred the Hot ‘n’ Spicy; its marination felt more thorough and the mild hotness did not kill that tangy flavour at the start. The Original was as tender, but felt less crisp, less thorough in marination and lacked a wow-factor to it. TCO Salad was an interesting side, but it was not the regular salad we were expecting; its zingy dressing is definitely refreshing especially after a fried meal as it felt like a Carpaccio instead. While the Sweet Potato Fries sounded enticing, it could have been better; more warm, more crisp and maybe slightly salty to tickle the taste buds. If anyone remembered my previous visit to the Ang Mo Kio outlet, you probably may have recalled that I was not too fond of the Corn Muffin. Glad to say they made major improvements to it now; its more crumbly and bread-like with the crusted top, and is no longer that greasy mushy mess that it was way back in the day!

To try a wider variety of food, I decided to go for the Fish Fillet burger ($4.50). Buns were heated upon serving, and you get a bit of crustiness from it as well. I also loved the Fish Fillet, served hot and crispy and felt similar to Long John Silver’s fish fillets when they used to be way better. The other ingredients; the lettuce, the tomatoes and that slice of cheese that looks like it came off a Kraft pack are simply too pedestrian and made the whole package felt kinda cheap. And yes, even at $4.50 I felt really confused about it; it just felt like a burger that came off from a stall in any coffeeshop.

Just as you thought there was no more space for cafes within the gentrified Tiong Bahru, Whisk Cafe had sprouted up in a unit that is situated right opposite the Tiong Bahru Market. I visited them on the second day of their official opening. Apart from several cakes available, there is also the signature Salted Caramel Eclair, a Lemon Meringue Tart and macarons on sale too.

Cheesecake ($7.00) was smooth, creamy yet firm. The cream cheese had a consistency that was similar to the biscuit crust lined at the bottom, which made for a uniformed texture for the cake. It also did not really taste as strong as most cheesecakes available outside; the creamy zestiness felt pretty neutral but also brought out evidently in the cheesecake.

Lemon Meringue Tart ($5.00) was also pretty good. The biscuit-like crumb doesn’t break into a million pieces upon one slice, and the lemon curd was tangy with a bit of egginess. Torched meringue was fluffy and not very sweet as well.
