Ok but ... ... OK Aug 12, 2013

St Marc Cafe’s second outlet is located in The Dining Edition within Marina Square, with the first outlet located in Vivocity. St Marc is better known for coffee, soft serves and its famed Chococro.

We ordered a White Chococro ($2.60). The Chococro is essentially a croissant stuffed with chocolate on the inside. The White variant comes with white chocolate. The Chococro felt oily on th exterior but quite dry on the inside, and rather chewy than crispy. The white chocolate does introduce a new level of sweetness into the croissant, but it was too sticky and overwhelmingly sweet for my liking. This would be suitable for sweet tooths however, especially those who love chocolate or milk chocolate.

Kintoki Milk ($8.80) was essentially a base of condensed milk and shaved ice served with soft-serve ice-cream with a dollop of red bean paste on the side. While it did taste fine, it seemed like a dish which can be replicated without much effort and seemed largely uninspiring. The red bean paste was pretty well done however, with the beans mashed up pretty well for a consistent texture. One thing we were definitely not happy about was finding two pieces of plastic, seemingly coming from a container bag inside the dessert. We are not sure where it came from, but we really do hope they pay a little more attention to what goes into their food.

I randomly picked Ling Heng Roasted Duck since it was the first roasted delight stall I passed in the market and had a small queue, which I thought would be supposedly good.

I ordered the Char Siew and Roasted Duck rice which was pretty reasonable for serving size at $4. The gravy was not very thick and gave a light saltish sweet flavour to the rice. The Char Siew was sweet but was not very consistently charred as a part of it was not charred at all. That being said though, it was not too much of an issue. The roast duck was pretty tender and fragrant, but the shortfall was that the skin was not really that crispy. I loved the chili that was being served though; unlike the usual ones that other places serve, Ling Heng Roasted Duck serves the same sort of chili that is found normally with Hainanese Chicken Rice.

Newbie on the block! OK Aug 01, 2013

Opened a week ago before our visit, Craft Bakery and Cafe is the latest cafe to open up in the Holland Village area, with La Nonna being its neighbour. Craft Bakery and Cafe is opened by the same people behind 3 Inch Sin which is now only available at Millennia Walk. The new cafe seem reminiscent of the 3 Inch Sin outlet located at Cluny Court. Carrying the well-famed Molten Lava Cake and other signature sweets from 3 Inch Sin, this is likely one location that would be attracting the old regulars from the Cluny Court outlet due to its proximity to Bukit Timah. Apart from the desserts, mains, sides and sandwiches are also served here to suit the cafe image.

Spam Frites are just Spam Fries or Spam Fritters, whichever name you are more used to. Spam, otherwise known as the “ang moh” luncheon meat is iconic for being full of sodium, so much so that it tastes way saltier than the Chinese luncheon meat. The ones here are pretty savoury and addictive, without being too overly salty and they tasted pretty similar to the ones we are used to as well.

The Craft Sandwich is an interesting sandwich combination involving the use of waffles. A pretty fresh change from the usual bread, the waffle was pretty light, airy and crispy. This would have gone brilliantly with a scoop of ice-cream on top. Being a savoury waffle dish, it includes a salad that apparently had a taste of mustard in it that gave it a plenty of kick. Non-mustard lovers should stay out of dish though; the taste was pretty evident and even had a numbing effect as well. The bacon was pretty crispy and seem to come off quite well with the waffles.

Turkey Sandwich had some jam, turkey ham and avocado in it. The bread was crusty, and while there really seemed to be nothing wrong with the sandwich, it was not really memorable either and felt pretty safe in general.

The Next Revolution? OK Jul 31, 2013

If not for this cafe, I guess I would not have even knew about the existence of Media Circle where Revolution Coffee is situated.

Revolution Coffee is dubbed as one of the most “ulu” cafes in Singapore, given its location within Portsdown Ave which is in Buona Vista. Places here are typically considered hidden gems, especially when there is a line of fine dining and posh restaurants just before you reach Media Circle. Some claimed to have found it difficult to locate, but I would say that Revolution Coffee is going to be as easy/difficult to find as Necessary Provisions where I frequent for coffee within the quieter Eng Kong Terrace.

Burger with Fries ($12.90) was the special offered that day and was apparently the final day it was available. There were two versions available with the same beef patty, one with Inferno sauce which is a spicy sauce and another with Mushroom Cheese. I ordered the Mushroom Cheese variation and when it was served I instantly realised how messy it would be when eaten. The burger ended up tilting with every single cut I made and I just decided to lay it on its side after finishing the bun. The burger at the very least was decent, but probably normal. The only wow-factor for me was the melted cheese which was stringy and chewy, which went superbly with the peppered mushroom with a earthy yet lightly spiced touch. The beef patty was tender and easy to cut but I would prefer it to be more tacky as it crumbled down fairly easily. I did appreciate the layer of caramalised onions that gave some taste to vegetables.

Revolution Coffee Affogato ($6.00) is their own version of the classic gelato and espresso combination. Here, they have added cookie crumbles to it which gave it a nice crunchy texture and bite with a bit of chocolate-y taste. The espresso seems little in comparison with large ball of gelato, so there is a need to dig in deeper for the espresso. I liked it here that the staff brings it to the table with the espresso and gelato separated, and pours the espresso for you in front of you, which is a visual performance with the hot espresso melting part of the gelato in front of your eyes.

Ever since Saizeriya Ristorante E Caffe had opened its doors in Singapore, it had always been synonymous with terms such as “cheap and good” or “value for money”. Even years after with countless of outlets opening across the island, prices remain affordable. The Toa Payoh outlet located not too far from the Toa Payoh HDB Hub is spacious and bright, with a wide seating area available on the inside that feels so homely and brightly lit due to the amount of windows; a good environment to sink yourself in for both lunch or dinner. For those who had not been to Saizeriya before, they serve appetisers such as Chicken Wings, Sausages and even Escargots and sells Pasta, Entrees and Pizzas for mains and desserts too. Don’t be fooled by the completely Italian sounding name and Italian cuisine sold here; it’s origins started all the way back in Japan.

The appetiser we ordered was Potato Omelette ($3.90). Despite it’s name, it was egg served with potato, corn, mushroom and bacon. The omelette is particularly thicker than omelettes you get at hawker or tzechar stalls and there were a fair amount of ingredients being tossed inside. No doubt the ingredients of this dish tasted good, basically every item tossed into the omelette was a shared ingredient from what could be found in their main courses, and the dish just tasted confusing because it just was everything that was inside it without complimenting each other. It just felt like even food had to go through some sort of identity crisis. It was not hard to swallow, but there just seem to have no main point towards it.

The Mushroom Meat Sauce Spaghetti ($5.90) actually came to the table before every other dish which was weird because we had an appetiser that had yet to come. The meat sauce seemed little but enough to make the dish taste. The mushrooms though small carried a good amount of flavour too. My friend who had this dish told me that the only thing she did not like was the strong taste of the noodles, otherwise I guess there was not really much to comment about.

We told the waiter to get our desserts but it only came after we got another waitress to check on them if they were ready. The Panna Cotta ($4.90) here is definitely smooth and firm enough, and has quite a sufficient amount of caramel on it. While the caramel of most Panna Cotta invokes a slight hint of bitterness and sweetness to the light-tasting custard pudding, this one was relatively sweeter. This would probably appeal to those who find that they dislike the bitterness in Panna Cotta that they had tried elsewhere.

Chocolate Lava ($5.90) was served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. It was my friend’s order and I had a pinch of the molten lava cake. No doubt it was slightly crumbly, but the cake was warmed and the chocolate was flowing with every cut made into it. My friend found it a bit too sweet but it was fine for me, and I would consider it to be a proper Chocolate Lava cake without any flaws.
