While Biopolis sees the addition of more eateries as the place became more developed of the late, Envy Coffee opens up in the upcoming one-north development at Fusionopolis, which is just not too far off from Buona Vista. Unlike cafes of the late, Envy Coffee somehow feels less hipster as it adopts a colourful theme without being too bright or outstanding with the help of wooden accents. The limited menu here features Lasagne, Pasta and Sandwiches, while serving cakes from Bukit Merah bakery, The Bakery Chef.

Their specialty, the Smoked Duck Miso Spaghetti was sold out by the time we visited them, so we went with the Roast Beef Sandwich ($8.30) instead. It was fairly decent; multi-grain bread with vegetables, roast beef and what seems like wasabi mayo in between, that gave a tinge of numbness which made a good contrast in terms of taste. It could be improved though; the meat was slightly gamey though should be acceptable to anyone who can take beef, and that it seem to have a bit of fatty meat that my dining partner was not too found of. The Potato Chips seemed to come out of the bag, but the salad was fresh and refreshing.

The coffee here was decent; the Flat White ($5.50) had a light chocolatey and nutty tone although it bubbled up pretty quickly. Quite like the latte art here which is different from the usual that cafes serve these days.

Authentic, but can be better OK May 29, 2014

Opened to much hype, Spanish Doughnuts was almost at its maximum capacity when we visited it on a weekend. For those who had not heard of Spanish Doughnuts before, it is an international brand that originated from Austrailia specialising in Churros. Here, the Churros come in two forms; the Original hot ones or the Premium ones which have fillings in them. For the health-conscious, they would be glad to know that Spanish Doughnut uses Canola Oil to fry their Churros. Other items include Spanish Chorizos; a hotdog bun as well as coffee, tea and even sodas.

We decided to go for an Original to test out how theirs would taste like. The Original Hot Churros ($6.90 for 3 pieces) here are churned out via their machine and fried upon order. Unlike American-style Churros, Spanish variations do not come with Cinnamon Sugar. The quality of the Churros here are a bit disappointing; crispy but lacking any taste from the batter, no chewy insides and with the Churro absorbing the oil it was fried in. The chocolate dip was a good balance of bittersweet, but it did leave an oily aftertaste at the end.

Creme Brulee is my favourite dessert, so the Creme Brulee Churro ($4.30) was my choice for the Premium Churro. It was however soft, though filled with a subtly sweet custard centre. I loved the bits of crystalized sugar stuffed around the edges of the Churro; replicating the cracking sugar layer of the original Creme Brulee.

Affordable western grill! OK May 20, 2014

For those wondering what happened to iSteaks after the coffeeshop it used to be located in transformed into Tom Yum Kung Fu, they have just been relocated into Level 2 of myVillage @ Serangoon Gardens which is located just opposite the road across where it used to be at. Much of the menu remains similar, with prices kept low despite a small increase due to it being located in the shopping centre now. Apart from grill items, there are also pasta and burgers available as well. Interestingly, the beverages counter located at the side not only offers wine but also canned soft drinks, chrysanthemum tea and even Nanyang Kopi that the uncle manning the counter pulls with a sock, much like in a coffeeshop.

My dining partner chose the Mushroom Chicken ($8.40). Each grilled dish comes with two side dishes, or in iSteaks’ terms “complements” like in Aston’s. She went for the Mac & Cheese and Baked Potato; the Mac & Cheese came with a thick though not really gooey cheese sauce that was cheesy, while the Baked Potato was soft and fluffy and came with a slab of butter to enhance its flavour. What would be better is to add bacon bits just for the savoury flavour. The chicken was tenderly grilled and covered with brown gravy that contained much mushrooms for a bite.

The other dining partner chose the Barbecue Chicken with Mac & Cheese and Onion Rings ($8.40). Same tender chicken smothered in thick, smoky BBQ sauce. The Onion Rings reminded me of the good ol’ days of Burger King where their Onion rings were crispy and came with strips of onion.

Since the ladies opted for chicken dishes, I went for the Lemon & Dill Fish ($9.40) which was not too bad either. The Pan-fried fish was crusty on the exterior and flaky within, with the Lemon Dill providing a light tint of sourness that I found rather refreshing. My choice of Cream Broccoli was a bit of a mistake though; no doubt well executed with soft and tasty greens, the vegetables pretty much seemed like they should not even come with the cream in the first place.

Not just about cupcakes! OK May 15, 2014

Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

Dulce & Sucre is  the latest venture belonging to the Twelve Cupcakes family owned by former-DJ Daniel Ong and his wife, former actress Jamie Teo which also operates brands such as Junbi and Cookies for Sid.

Dulce means “sweet”, while Sucre is “sugar” in french. The menu here therefore consists of sweet treats, from cakes, whoopies and others such as tarts and Panna Cotta. There is also a counter dedicated for Twelve Cupcakes here, which makes it a convenient spot to takeaway some cupcakes after a cup of coffee. Despite its cafe outlook, it somehow operates much like Starbucks where it is self-service and patrons are to self-collect their items.

Two cake loaves were available that day, which I went for the Cranberry Pistachio Loaf ($4.50). The cake loaf was more of an egg cake, which was pillowy than crumbly. Topped with cream cheese, pistachio and cranberries, it was light in flavour as the cream cheese was not particularly thick, but a bit foamy instead. The nutty flavour combined with the cranberries were rather refreshing, with more cranberries hidden in the base as well. With its size, this is also rather filling especially for those with smaller appetites.

A selection of tarts were available, which the Apple Crumble ($5.50) caught my eye. While the crumbs were sweet with sugar and crunchy, they seemed to be just placed over the tart as all the bits came off and created a mess on the table upon the first fork. The caramalised apples were nicely spiced in cinnamon and was not too sweet, but felt a bit flat on flavour. Tart base was thin enough and felt cookie-like.

Coffee is not Dulce & Sucre’s forte; while the Flat White ($4.90) is creamy the coffee was bitter and burnt. While I am one who does not really bother much on latte art, the high price tag makes me wonder what I am exactly paying for.

Underwhelming and overhyped OK May 15, 2014

Opened to much hype, Carvers & Co is one of the few new eateries to have opened at East Coast Road. Unlike hipster cafes of the late that had been serving brunch items that usually involves eggs, Carvers & Co takes on a different approached by putting roasts on its menu, as well as other mains that are less conventional though some brunch items are still available. The menu is rather creative; all clipped onto a book so you can literally flip it while browsing. Interestingly, Carvers & Co is being run by the former owner of One Man Coffee which is now currently run by a friend of the ex-owner.

It had been some time since we had truffle fries, so we were glad to see them serving Communal Truffle Fries ($10.90). While they are all crispy, it seemed that there was a difference between “chips” and “fries” here, with the fries seemingly opened from a freezer pack with truffle oil drizzled over it and served. We could not help but noticed a few over-fried fries in the bowl, and the inconsistency in taste was noticeable as there were some parts which lacked the truffle aroma.

Wanting to try a brunch item but not wanting to go for the mainstream Scrambled Eggs, we went for the Farmhouse Frittata ($9.90). It was somewhat like a quiche with cheese and bacon and comes with toast and garden salad on the side. The toasts were crispy and tasted rather spiced, but the garden salad was just uninspiring in its presentation, while the Frittata replicated a thicker Fu Rong Omelette with cheese and bacon inside.

Since my dining partner had a brunch item, I went with a main. Stewed Chicken ($18.00) was a dish that involved white wine and dates, and sounded very classy on paper. It was in fact luxurious, with the sauce tasting sweet from the dates and slightly sourish from the white wine; a combination seemingly odd at first but strangely appealing. The chicken was also tender and succulent; the only gripe was its size which seemed a tad small for a guy. The sides were a salad with raw celery and carrot in a certain drizzle; the celery being rather mild tasting so it was not exactly revolting, but still a rather odd combination somehow.

While the food were largely disappointing, the Flat White ($4.50) was rather robust with a strong acidity and a earthy tone for the finishing touch. Carvers & Co uses blends from Common Man Coffee Roasters, which assures the quality of its coffee.
