Unlike the cramped Balmoral Plaza outlet, Oblong's Maju Avenue outlet takes up a shophouse space which means more space for comfort. Besides the usual ice-cream and various waffles they offer, the outlet at Maju Avenue also serves up coffee which are made from blends from Papa Pahelta.

Amongst the Buttermilk, Red Velvet and Bamboo Charcoal Waffles, we decided to go for the Red Velvet ($4.70) which is widely raved on Instagram. We also added a scoop of Earl Grey Lavender ice-cream ($3.30), and our choice of drizzle was maple syrup. To replicate Red Velvet Cake, the waffles came with a layer of cream cheese in between apart from its maroon appearance. The waffles were crispy with its eggy, fragrant batter much like any usual waffle, but the cream cheese did add a light flavour that made it feel different from what we are familiar with. Aromatic and refreshing, the Earl Grey Lavender ice-cream was not too milky in order to bring out the fragrant tea flavours, while the maple syrup just adds another dimension of sweetness to the waffle.

Great food and great vibes! Smile Jul 01, 2014

The Lokal is a new cafe situated at Neil Road beside Goethe Institure, which is also affiliated to Telok Ayer cafe, Sarnies. It's menu offers pretty much western grub; featuring burgers and sandwiches, salads and soup with some bakes as well as plated desserts. One of the interesting things The Lokal does is that the chefs here cure their meat, smoke their fish and does the yoghurt from scratch; so expect really fresh, homemade ingredients being served in the dishes here.

One of our dining partners were severely late so we decided to share the Roast Chicken Panini ($14.00+) while waiting for him to arrive. Coming in Crispy Pancetta, Tomatoes, Avocado, Cos, Aioli and Bacon, it was served slightly near cold, as though it was meant to be a cold dish. The tomatoes were insanely fresh; sweet with a tangy flavour, matched well with smooth avocado puree that is used in place of butter and bacon which provided a touch of savouriness, while the chicken was tender and lightly roasted for some flavour. Even the bread was impressive; it has some sort of elasticity that gave it a real nice chew. It was easily one of the most memorable chicken sandwiches that I had.

When the second dining partner came, we went for the Roast Beef on Rye ($15.90+). If the Roast Chicken Panini was impressive, the Roast Beef on Rye was beyond words; crispy bread coupled with tender and succulent beef that did not taste gamey in any way with a balanced portion of vegetables to beef, it was so well proportioned that it did not feel tiring and we were left craving for more. Did I also mention that the caramalised onions were also really sweet?

Our original decision was to get a side but we ended up undecided on which dessert to get instead as we were attracted to both the Sticky Date Pudding and Apple Pineapple Crumble Pie with Ice-Cream ($9.00+). Eventually, we went for the latter; a really sweet-yet-sour combination that was generous on chunks of both fruits and came with a real crunchy crumble and a vanilla ice-cream that was rich in its aroma. One of the dining partners found it too sweet for his liking, but the two of us thought that it was that that made the dessert so good.

Crispy White Carrot Cake! Smile Jul 01, 2014

Located in the popular Hainanese Village Food Centre in Hougang, Hup Huat White Carrot Cake as its name suggests, specialises in White Carrot Cake. There’s only one item sold here, in two sizes ($2.50 or $3.50), no more and no less.

I ordered the smaller portion at $2.50. If you are one who love to chew on the cubes of carrot cake, this variant might not be the one you are looking for as much of the carrot cake had been mushed beneath the egg save for a few pieces. Ignore that fact and that it does not come in a whole piece, it is definitely enjoyable as it comes without much grease, and the egg is pan-fried to crispiness; so much it actually resembles potato chips with a smoother texture.

For the love of Whoopie Pies! Smile Jul 01, 2014

Categories : American | Bakery | Café

Whoopie Love is a two-month old cafe located in Toa Payoh that is all about their passion to Whoopie Pies. The simply decorated cafe may not be attention-grabbing, but we love it how they have seats for dine-in. Here, there are five flavours that are available everyday, while there is also one that is a special that rotates weekly.

Blueberry Lavender ($3.50) is one of the few rotated flavours offered at Whoopie Love. Unlike most of the resident flavours, this contains nothing chocolatey; so non-chocolate fans do take note. Whoopie Pies, as described by the owner is a crossbreed between cookie and cake; our Whoopie felt like a two egg cakes with cream in between presented like a cookie. The cream carried an interesting floral scent that was aromatic, but spiked with a tinge of fruity sourness that was rather intriguing, while the egg cakes were soft and fluffy and left no messy bits on the plate. A pretty match of flavours.

Delectable local fusion gelato! Smile Jul 01, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Italian | Ice Cream and Gelato

Momolato is one of the stalls that had sprouted up at SMU of the late. The gelato here is all made in-house, and the selection of flavours rotate weekly. Here, there is something for everyone; taking an example from their scooped gelato, where there are classic flavours such as Earl Grey and Bailey’s, while there are also quite a variety of fusion combinations such as the Shiro (White miso with almonds and butterscotch drizzle) and Milo with marshmallows. They also do sell popsicles; a rare treat to find in gelato stalls.

Shiok! ($3.90/scoop) is a flavour that would win hearts of Singaporeans. The combination of Coconut with Gula Melaka and Pandan Jelly feels not only local, but also sounded pretty much like a decent replica of Chendol. Their gelato was smooth and creamy; the photo just speaks for itself. We found the flavour pretty rich, with a distinct Pandan taste that’s definitely coconut-y followed by the signature sweetness of Gula Melaka. The Pandan Jelly did provided a bit of flavour, but given the way it was stored, it pretty much froze up with the rest of the gelato and became pretty icy though it was not really too much of a deal.
