Let's come to gather! Smile Jan 25, 2014

Categories : Café | Pasta | Burgers and Sandwiches

Many food spots during this era focuses a lot on food, and no doubt good food is important for a bistro. To-gather Cafe’s mission is more than just that; it’s purpose is to be a place where the young and old gathers to spend quality time together.

The Grilled Pandan Chicken Chop ($8.90) comes with seasonal vegetables and fries as a side. Chicken was specifically marinated for the dish, and suggested that lemongrass could be one of the ingredients involved. This made the Pandan sauce go well with the chicken by inducing a coconut flavour within that made it feel more local. Honey sauce brought out a tinge of sweetness, which was enhanced with pineapple cubes for a refreshing taste. Fries were crispy and fluffy in the inside, while the salad was fresh.

Pork Corden Bleu ($10.90) is the variation of Chicken Cordon Bleu, which substitutes chicken with the use of pork. Unlike Chicken Corden Bleu, the Pork Corden Bleu was not rolled with ham and cheese contained inside, but rather having a pork cutlet sliced in the middle with ham and cheese stuffed inside. This meant that the pork did not achieve the same level of bounciness as the chicken, but it was still very tender. The golden-brown batter also stuck on to the cutlet perfectly. While the cheese was flowy, it was missing out on the stringiness and the taste was overshadowed by ham, which is likely to be caused by using cheese slices.

To end of the meal, we ordered a Chocolate Lava ($3.80) and it was great. Served warm, the chocolate within was thick and gooey as it flowed gently from the cake, and definitely sent us to Chocolate Heaven!

UCC Coffee is being served here, which ensures the quality of the coffee. The Long Black ($3.50) was strong without being too acidic.

The Mocha ($4.50) was a bit too heavy on chocolate as it overwhelmed the coffee’s aroma.

Bright & cheery spot for coffee! Smile Jan 25, 2014

Brew & Bake Company is the latest newcomer to the Kent Ridge region, which adds on to the list of eateries that are in the vicinity of NUS.

Four cakes are available for the day, and my dining partner chose the Kaya Cheese Cake ($5.90). Coconut shavings on the top of the cheesecake gave the pandan taste a boost, while the cake overall was airy, smooth and light. The crust was also sturdy and held up nicely while being cut through.

I chose the Neapolitan ($4.90), a Strawberry Cheesecake sitting above a brownie. The clever use of the brownie saw it as a chocolate base as from usual cheesecakes with a digestive biscuit base. Despite so, the brownie layer tasted rather heavy and overwhelmed much of the flavour from the Strawberry Cheesecake, which was lightly tart with the sourness of cream cheese.

Feeling slightly adventurous that day, I went to order the El-Chemist frappe ($5.90). A selection of syrups were on display, and one is supposed to squeeze out their desired flavours and amount into a test tube and pass it to the staff who would prepare your latte. My concoction was a mix of Dolce, Vanilla, Roasted Almond and Butterscotch syrups in a latte, served cold with whipping cream on the top. It had a very buttery and Bailey’s Coffee-like taste which was alluring. For the more adventurous, caramel, chocolate and lychee syrups amongst other flavours are available too.

Yes Yes Chicken! Smile Jan 14, 2014

Categories : Korean | Fast Food | Halal | Korean Fried Chicken

Having tried the outlet at The Star Vista a year ago, the opening of Nene Chicken’s new outlet came as an excitement to me mainly because of its more accessible location. It came as a replacement to the Gong Cha outlet, which takes up the shop space next to the main entrance to *SCAPE. Being a Korean fast food outlet, Nene’s menu is made up of chicken items. Forget all about burgers; this place is all about chicken wings, tenders. Choose from a meal, then pick your preferred flavour and wait for it to be prepared before collecting (waiting time was around 15 minutes as it is prepared upon ordering, though we had experienced longer at The Star Vista)

The Swicy Tenders set ($9.90) came with a box of pickled radish, a pack of regular Buffalo sticks and regular drink. We also ordered an ala-carte large Buffalo Fries ($2.50) as well.

“Swicy” as it turns out was a fusion of sweet and spicy combined, as the gooey and sticky sauce provided a tangy sweet flavour followed by a subtle spiciness. It seemed rather similar to Thai chili sauce, but without the sharp spiciness. The chicken was also juicy and tender as well, and the sauce was well coated on each piece to ensure the consistency in flavour.

Buffalo Sticks was the fancy name to the shoestring fries they serve here. Well-seasoned in chili powder, despite the thinness of the fries, potato was evident and the seasoning gave it a light spiciness. Due to its size, it was also less filling as well, which makes it addictive as one pops them into the mouth.

Pickled Radish is a dish rarely served with fast food, and while it looks simple, these were tasty with a sweet and sour flavour that goes easy on the palate. The cubed radish is also crunchy and juicy as well.

For those who are into the Korean wave, Nene Chicken is a place to check out. While I had not tried actual fried chicken from Korea, Nene Chicken had managed to convince that they do serve some authentic Korean fare around. While being a fast food restaurant, do take note that there is a minimum wait of 15 minutes for each order as everything is prepared upon order.

Food with a cause! Smile Jan 13, 2014

Newly opened less than a month ago, Crossings Cafe is not just your regular cafe; it is a social enterprise full of opportunities to students with needs. Despite being new, they have already managed to offer internships to students from Assumption Pathway School, which is a school for the disadvantaged. Profits from the cafe are also claimed to be donated to charities for a good cause.

The menu sticks largely to a western theme, but there are some dishes served with a local twist. Chili Crab Pasta ($16.00++) was a signature dish in the menu, which was described to be cooked with a unique Crab Claw Meat Sauce. There were bits of meat in the sauce and while it was mildly spicy, it somehow felt a bit lacking as it still tasted pretty much of tomato, as though derived from a tomato base instead. Soft shell crabs were fried and presented atop the pasta, which provided a bite for the dish with its crispiness.

Since my dining partner was having pasta, I decided to go for a main which we decided on the Spicy Coriander Grilled Fish ($15.00++). It was fresh and flaky, and well-seasoned with coriander to remove the fishy odour. The tomato puree was tangy, fresh and felt like it was made from tomatoes instead of coming out of a can, and came with a moderate tinge of spiciness. The sauteed vegetables included pan-fried potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots which were tasty on their own, but would be better with seasoning.

Instead of having a Soup of the Day, Crossings Cafe’s daily special was the Panna Cotta of the Day ($5.00++). Chendol was the flavour on the day of our visit, and sure enough it came with red beans and jelly noodles. Caramel was substituted with Gula Melaka to simulate the signature taste of Chendol. The smooth and eggy pudding complimented well with the various condiments, and despite being a largely western dish, carried the local fusion well. This would be one item I would be glad to have on any other day.

While there are many cafes out there, not a lot of them operates with a social cause. We enjoyed our stay at the Crossings Cafe, for we were glad to have given the chance for the interns to showcase their abilities which were commendable. Some of the service staff whom attended our table despite being disadvantaged was extremely polite and even attentive, which is better than some other restaurants as well.

A meatless experience! Smile Jan 04, 2014

Real Food is not only a cafe; it is also a grocer that stocks up on organic foods which you can buy home if you fancy, as well as books on healthy living. All of the items in the menu of the cafe are good for vegans/vegetarians, and the menu is pretty detailed with labels that indicate if items includes onions/garlic or caffeine-free. Most of the items are also organic; a concept that is not yet being popularised in restaurants in Singapore.

Mushroom Bruschetta ($7.80) is one of the sides we ordered. The Bruschetta had cheese melted on top, which is pretty gooey and stringy when pulled apart. The crispy Bruschetta also created a nice texture, with a brilliant earthy taste that compliments the cheese by the sauteed assorted mushrooms on the top. A great side for those who loves mushrooms and cheese.

I did not have the chance to try out the Fruit Rojak ($6.80), but my dining partners commented it was basically a Rojak sauce mixed into organic fruits such as Apples and Pineapples with sprinkles of peanuts on the top.

If you thought that only our regular Potatoes were used in the Organic Potato Wedges ($6.80), be in for a treat as there are few slices of Sweet Potato used as well. I did not try the Sweet Potato slices because there were only a few slices of it in there, but the regular Potatoes were pretty crusty on the top but soft in the middle. Would prefer it to be seasoned more though, although that would have defeated the purpose by being a bit too unhealthy.

I also did not have a pinch of the Organic Mushroom Aglio Olio ($7.80), but it was pretty mild on flavour with plenty of sauteed mushrooms. My friend whom had it said he forgot to opt for the additional chili flakes, so it seemed lacking of a spicy punch in taste.

For someone who did not like celery, I was actually pretty fine with the Mushroom and Celery Tomato Penne ($11.80). The celery did not have the heavy flavour of what some people might dislike or like it for; much of it had been covered by the tomato sauce. The tomato sauce however felt increasingly sour halfway through though. The shaved cheese did melt in the pasta and provided a nice chew and stringiness in the sauce.

The Genovese Pesto Pasta ($9.80) might look odd compared to the other pasta dishes that night, but it was just the Pesto sauce. Personally, I felt that this was the best pasta of the night. The pesto sauce was chunky with bits of nuts in it which created a lot of bite. The addition of feta cheese also adds an interesting salty touch to the dish.

Assorted Vegetable Ball Pasta ($13.80) was the most unique pasta that was ordered that night. The Vegetable Balls were made of various vegetables, such as lentils, beet and chickpea to replicate meatballs to keep the dish vegan. The pasta is tossed in tomato sauce, which was the same as the one found in the Mushroom and Celery Tomato Penne.

The Organic Pizza ($13.80) are homemade here and comes with cheese, tomato sauce, organic tomatoes, organic aubergines, organic zucchini, organic pineapple, organic capsicum, onions, wild mushrooms, fresh basil leaves and olives. Patrons can choose to opt out any of the ingredients with no change in pricing, but all items will be included if unspecified. The person who had the pizza seemed pretty happy about his order, and while it is a personal portion, I must say it is possible for it to be shared between two as well.
