Located in the neighbourhoods, this place keeps things simple where they had decided to keep themselves off the hipster vibes of cafes of the late. Instead, it is cheery with its bright orange walls, joyous with its happy-looking decorations and even to the extent of cutesy. The menu largely focuses on cakes and other bakes, as well as their specialty which are waffles, coffee and tea.

While waiting for the friend to arrive, I got the Brownie ($3.50). Unconventionally decorated with sugar flowers and chocolate mousse, it contains three layers of chocolatey goodness. Under the layer of mousse contains a fudgey layer of thick, gooey chocolate. It enhanced the taste of the brownie, which was slightly less dominating in taste and was moist enough for a brownie not being too wet nor too dry.

Apart from the Brownie, other small bites included Macarons ($3.00 each), which were all chewy and had nice feet with them. The fillings were generally flavourful and not cloying sweet, though the Chocolate & Pistachio was a more sweet-salty combination which was a wee bit heavy compared to the Green Apple & Cinnamon, which was a classic combination with the spice rather evident. These are great for a tea time treat, especially for sweet tooths eager to succumb to their Macaron cravings.

Waffles ($5.00) is one of the specialties of Shrove Tuesday, and it was done in its own unique way. Airy, fluffy and light, it also has a crispy texture which was great. They used yeast in their recipe, which made it taste rather bread-like somehow, but also helped in the overall fluffiness of the waffle as claimed by the staff. My dining partner ordered a scoop of Cheesecake gelato ($2.50/scoop) to compliment the waffle, which we found to be rich in the taste of mascarpone cheese, but can get quite jelat if being eaten alone. Eat it by dabbing some over the waffle; it helps in achieving a less sickening flavour as well as a luxurious combination to the waffle.

The Flat White ($4.50) here was surprisingly good. Shrove Tuesday serves up Agust Natura Equa organic coffee that origins from Italy, which was rather smokey and nutty. Coupling with the milkiness and creaminess, it was really comforting on a rainy afternoon.

Categories : Dim Sum

Being part of the Arteastiq group, Hong Shi Yi Food Artistry which is situated beside Art Gallery 798 is also one of the more affordable Chinese restaurants in Millenia Walk.

While there were many items offered in the dim sum menu, nearly half of it were not available for dinner as their last orders are at 2pm. The Shanghai Xiao Long Bao ($7.90++) is however available throughout the day. The Bao was filled with savoury broth that bursts with each bite, and the skin was of the right thickness as it was easy to bite through. The meat filling was also generous as well. This should satisfy XLB lovers who are picky on their XLB.

Steamed Custard and Salted Egg Yolk Bun ($4.90++) came in an unconventional form, featuring a black bun containing sesame than the usual white one. Honestly, the black bun is no different in taste than the usual, and we thought it could have been less thick as quite a huge bite needs to be taken to reach the custard. We would also loved it more if the custard was more flowy, but the filling was great as it was thick, being slightly more salty than sweet with more salted egg content.

Crispy Red Bean Pancake ($6.90++) was part of the dessert menu. The pastry replicated much of a Chinese Onion Pancake with a subtly sweet red bean filling that was generously filled within.

Since there were a lack of dimsum, we also went for mains to share. The Fried Rice with Shrimp, Preserved Vegetables and Egg ($14.90++) was superb with its moistness and the perfect blend in taste where there was a balance in all flavours which gave the dish its subtle fragrance. Prawns were pretty fresh as well.

Intended to be a side for the rice, the Honey Glazed Yam Cube ($11.90++) was a savoury-sweet dish. The heavy flavours of the sweet and sticky honey somehow did not overshadow the yam, which was something we liked about it. We could not stop ourselves from getting back to dish over and over again as it was just addictive, and even the vegetable that was laid on the plate tasted great with the honey sauce as well.

Another dessert we ordered was the Chilled Glutinous Rice with Ice-Cream ($4.90++). Unlike the conventional way, this dessert is served cold in the bowl and therefore the ice-cream takes longer to start melting. Interesting to note was the Chocolate Pocky Stick that was stuck into the the dessert, which not only looked odd and did nothing much to the taste of the dessert too. The Glutionous Rice is served unsweetened, so one should mix in the ice-cream before having it for the subtle sweetness with a hint of vanilla atop the Glutinous Rice. Definitely a hit for Pulot Hitam lovers.

Since it is a concept by Arteastiq, we had high expectations for our tea. The Jasmine Tea ($2.50++) we had was rather different as it turned out with a rather refreshing taste that seemed clear without a heavy aftertaste nor body. A tea that is great to have in between heavy tasting dishes.

Being the latest of the lot to open in Biopolis, it is also one with the most hipster vibe; industrial designs and even an iPod on top of speakers. This is pretty unusual as cafes in this district usually carries a more mature and classy vibe to attract the office crowds. Even though running in its test kitchen state, the menu generally has quite a variety that spreads from brunch to dinner. A pity sides like Truffle Fries are not available in the afternoon though …

Having stayed away from brunch items for quite some time, I went for the only one on the menu; Eggs on Toast ($9.00) with an additional side of Smoked Salmon (+$5.00). This comes with an option of eggs coming in scrambled, overeasy or sunny (no poached though) and sourdough or ciabatta, and sides such as mesculun salad and bacon. We opted for scrambled eggs, and it was creamy and runny with a hint of pepper sprinkled above it. The strips of bacon were slightly stiff and hard to chew, and it reminded us of bak kwa a fair bit. The ciabatta toast were smothered with unsalted butter, and works rather well with a dab of scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, though could work better toasted. The mesculun salad was interesting; while it tasted similar to Vinegarette dressing initially, it turns slightly sweeter after each time and catches on our tastebuds after time.

On the contrary, the Cod Fish & Chips ($18.00) were slightly disappointing. Small granules of salt can be seen all over the fries and surprisingly, the fried fish and that seemed to be the only item flavouring the dish. Fries were great; crispy and fluffy with enough salt. The problem came from the cod fillet used; rubbery, stiff and bland. Kudos to the coleslaw however, fresh and cold just the way I preferred.

Three types of coffee are served here; Black (Long Black), White (Flat White) and Chocolate-based (Mocha). They use blends from Yahava Koffeeworks, which ensured that earthiness coupling with the creaminess in the White ($4.50). We were also glad that someone finally bothered to serve us a latte art that was something apart from the Tulip, Heart and Rosetta that we were getting one time too many.

Being in its test kitchen phase, there are bound for things to be improved on in their food, which can be further polished. We were quite glad that the service was prompt, and the owner was rather apologetic about the Cod Fish & Chips when feedback upon. They did offer to waive it off the bill or replace it with another item but we were feeling so bad about it so we insisted to pay for it; another great service recovery. With such positive attitude and the willingness to improve, Curbside Coffee & Wine Bar is somewhere we would see shining in the future!

The latest venture belonging to Mediacorp actor/host Ben Yeo, this bistro located at the heart of Bukit Timah brings the best of western food to the residents as well as late-night supper-goers to their patrons, which encompasses the all-familiar Tenderfresh Fried Chicken as well as pasta from Play Kitchen, which was his first venture.

Since the meal was going to be rather meaty, we went for a healthier side which we went for Marinated Mushrooms with Cherry Tomatoes ($5.00). It started off rather weird and quirky; the juicy and somewhat zesty tomatoes just did not seem to hit a note with the earthy and flavourful cold mushrooms, but with each spoonful it became rather tolerable and in fact tastier with every bite. The mushrooms were able to break the monotony of the usual salad, and adding Parmesan cheese definitely adds on to the taste factor

The Fries with Wasabi Mayo ($4.90) did not really hit off well with two of us, who were big fans of wasabi. We found it too tame although it carried a distinct flavour of wasabi less the numbing factor, but the other dining partner who was not very receptive of wasabi loved it as it was not too strong. Personal preferences, I would say.

Because it was Tenderfresh, I could not do without ordering fried chicken. The Lucky Set ($7.90 with sambal sauce/$6.90 without sambal sauce) comes with two wings, fries and coleslaw. The fries were salted enough to taste with enough crisp, though I would love it thicker. Chicken Wings were huge, crispy and juicy. Tossed in a generous amount of sambal sauce, these wings reminded us of the days of Carona; carrying a real kick of spiciness that packs lots of oomph not meant for the light-hearted.

One of my dining partners went for the Grilled Tilapia with Aglio Olio & Sambal ($8.90). The pasta was evenly tossed in herbs, chili, olive oil and pepper which carried a fragrant light yet peppery flavour; great enough on its own. On the other end, the Grilled Tilapia was well-grilled being crusty on the outside but felt rather dry and lacking of flavour. That was where the sambal sauce comes in handy, which adds a spicy kick to the fish. Interestingly the sambal sauce here is slightly different from the one served with the chicken, which is more dry and carried a heavier belachan taste.

The other dining partner ordered a somewhat similar pasta, save for the Chicken Chop with Black Pepper sauce over it. To be honest, we were a bit confused with this dish; supposedly named Chicken Cutlet with Aglio Olio & Thai Sauce ($7.90), we were expecting a fried cutlet than a grilled one and there was really nothing Thai with it. The Aglio Olio was as good, and the grilled chicken was juicy and fragrant. We loved how it was, but we were caught off guard by what it turned out to be in reality from the menu.

Hipster Cafe in Bedok! Smile Apr 07, 2014

Coming in, its quite unexpected to find a cafe situated in the heartlands so charming. Clean and minimalist, much of the cafe is made up of brick, cement and wooden accents. For a moment I thought I was in fact in a cafe at Tanjong Pagar. For some strange reason it also bore much resemblance to the old Stranger’s Reunion before the renovation, which is currently reopened as Waffle Slayer.

The owners have intentions of serving sandwiches and waffles in the future, but for now only bakes from a homebaker are available. Earl Grey cakes have always caught my attention, and I got myself the Earl Grey Bundt Cake ($3.50). A mistake, I thought, as the cake was so dry it was so hard to cut through, not to mention that extra dry crust which seem to be created as such to replicate a crusty exterior, though it did carry a slight Earl Grey aroma with it.

The Lemon Tart ($4.20) was however great with the first few bites. I love how tart it was, until I got till halfway and it seemed a wee bit too sour for me. The crust was easy to cut through, but they used one similar to egg tarts instead. Not my personal preference but honestly nothing wrong with it either.

On the other hand, I was blown away by the quality of the coffee here. They use Papa Pahelta Terra Firma for their coffee, and my White 5Oz ($4.00) was fruity and just of a comfortable level of acidity; the right cuppa to perk me up for the start of the day.
