Good place for sushi Smile Oct 08, 2013

Genki sushi needs to expand; having only 2 outlets in Singapore is not enough. It's arguably one of the best affordable sushi places around (other than the one at citylink mall which I haven't tried), and definitely much better than sakae. I got their soft shell crab handroll which was good, hot and crispy, and not to mention the must-try pollock roe sushis - either seared salmon or ebi, both are good. Also had their surf clam sushi and fried tofu. Very value for money.

Spending per head: Approximately $13(Dinner)

Variety of food to choose from Smile Oct 07, 2013

Brought my friend to this place as we were in the vicinity; it was quite crowded during dinner hours. They offer very affordable dishes and you can choose from a variety of combination - like fried rice with sambal squid, rice with egg, veg and prawn roll, rice with chicken and kangkong, etc etc, all priced between $3.90 - $6.90. My friend had the combination of egg, kangkong and their famous prawn roll at $6.90 - would have to recommend their prawn roll (ala carte at $6). I got the rice with garlic chicken and egg - preferred the fish but the chicken in this sauce was alright as well. We also had some garlic pork at $8; do avoid this as it is absolutely horrible, the black sauce overpowers the whole dish and it's basically diced pork (we thought it was pork chop and fried before we ordered). Do get the cucumber with apple juice, freshly made.

Spending per head: Approximately $12(Dinner)

Macarons Smile Oct 04, 2013   (Related Review)

Passed by TWG and was attracted by the many flavours of macarons available (10 in total). It's also surprisingly affordable at around $12 for a box of 6. I had the 1837 black tea & blackcurrant one (tea taste not distinct, had a very sweet berry taste); the Napolean Tea & Caramel (forgettable); the Earl Grey Fortune & Chocolate (earl grey taste distinct, masked by chocolatey taste), etc. The two I would recommend is the Moroccan Mint Tea if you like a slight minty taste, and also the Grand Wedding Tea, passion fruit & coconut (although I didn't really like the strong coconut after taste).

Great Desserts Smile Jul 22, 2013   (Related Review)

I absolutely love the Fries with truffle aioli and piquant mayo ($8); one of the best dips I have eaten. The truffle aioli was very addictive, with the truffle taste distinct. If you wanted a change, you could switch to the slightly spicy piquant mayo. A must-order to share amongst friends.

Singapore Sling originated from Raffles Hotel, and perhaps that explains the hefty price tag of $28 per glass. Singapore Sling by Hendrick's comprises of Hendrick's Gin, Cherry Brandy, Cointreau, and Pineapple Juice. Not too lethal, and the tinge of sweetness was just right. A great drink to go with your food (esp fries).

I really love desserts and I've had my share of average or bad ones to know that the Chilled Strawberry Soup ($12) is great. The server would pour sparkling wine into the plate once it's being served. It tastes like strawberry puree but not too rich, and was very refreshing. The lime sorbet placed in the middle provided a sweet-sour contrast. Highly recommended after a meal.

Of course, we ordered what was deemed by the server as the most popular dessert there, the Sticky Toffee Pudding ($10), which I would also recommend. It's made of dates, butterscotch sauce and sea salt. Pudding was warm, soft and moist, and butterscotch taste was strong. The vanilla ice cream complemented it well.

Lastly, we had the Ginger Nougat Parfait ($10). It's made of caramelised pineapple, almond and cinnamon, and comes with a puff pastry stick. I didn't really like this as the ginger taste was rather strong, and the nougat tastes creamy and ice cream-like but was soft and sticky.

Overall a great dining experience, and recommended for gatherings or special occasions. You could drop by for their fries and have a couple of drinks to chill as well, as they have live bands playing after 9+ on certain days. Or else, just go for their desserts!

Since my previous visit where I sampled their Chilli Crab Spaghettini ($25) which I loved, I brought my friends here to try out other dishes. The servers were attentive and refilled our water constantly, and also made great recommendations of their food.

We decided to pick some small plates to share, starting with the Coffin Bay Oysters (3pc $15.50, 6pc $30). The oysters were huge and juicy, and very fresh as well as we were able to taste the natural sweetness.

I'm not quite a salad person but I loved the Foie Gras Salad ($23). It has diced foie gras cubes, accompanied by apricot chutney, blueberries, croutons and almond kernels. The whole sweet and savory combination was great, and I loved the addition of almonds especially.

For big plates, we picked the Seafood Gratin ($26). It's made of pignolina pasta, looks like rice but tastes like pasta bits; reminds me of paella but it's much softer. Taste-wise, it's more common with melted cheese and seafood buried within. It's extremely filling, and the portion is huge, so it's good for 3 or more to share, as you wouldn't want to have the whole thing alone.

Next, we had the Sous Vide Baharat Chicken Leg ($28), pieces of chicken marinated with butternut squash puree, ginger and red pepper. The chicken meat was very tender, and the skin crispy and flavorful.
