Decent zi char OK Oct 14, 2013
Categories : Seafood | Zi Char

I chanced upon this air-conditioned zi char place just next to the famous and popular place selling teochew porridge, and decided to give it a try. It wasn't crowded on a Sunday night, with only a few tables occupied. They have a rather wide variety of dishes available from fish, chicken, beef, pork, squid, prawn, crab, etc, and many ways of cooking, like cereal, black pepper, salted egg, etc. I was attracted by the salted egg squid ($12) - fried in a crispy batter, and the salted egg was coated and quite powdery, not bad. The sweet potato leaves ($8) on the other hand is common and portion was very little.

Chendol OK Oct 12, 2013

We were walking around and chanced upon this stall where many people are eating chendol, and decided to give it a try. The normal chendol costs $1.50, and it's the traditional kind, rich and thick coconut taste, but I found it a little too sweet for my liking. I got the durian chendol at $2. It tasted weird at first but the durian was very very good, very fragrant and sweet. For a rather big slab of durian flesh, $2 is pretty alright.

Spending per head: Approximately $2(Supper)

BBQ Stingray Smile Oct 12, 2013

I was at Changi Village Hawker and wanted to have BBQ stingray, so I went around looking for a bbq seafood stall. I tried the one from another stall at the back occupying 2 stalls and didn't like it. I preferred the stingray from this stall as the chilli was good, you could taste the dried shrimp in it and it wasn't too spicy. The smallest portion costs $10. I also ordered takeaway of lala, which was good as well.

Nachos Cheese Bread OK Oct 12, 2013

This bakery is rather popular as I spotted a short queue in the late afternoon. It might be a viable contender to Barcook as it also has Nachos Cheese bread and liu sha bao. I got the Nachos Cheese Bread which costs $1.50 - you can see the liquid nachos flowing out after heating the bun - it's very tasty with mashed potato and ham within, and the nachos not too overpowering. I also liked the ma ti su which costs $0.80 each, a pastry well done.

Vegetarian Food OK Oct 12, 2013

We went to Nature Vegetarian again, and this time I tried 2 different dishes - first, the Gong Bao Monkey Head Mushroom ($10); I tried the same from Mushroom Pot and fell in love with it; unfortunately, the one here fails miserably in comparison - the sauce was a little too sour, and not appetizing. Second, I tried the spinach soup ($8); this was bland but healthy tasting, with a strong ginger taste, not bad. Lastly, we had the cereal abalone mushrooms again, liked the fried cereal which was crispy and not oily.

Recommended Dish(es):  Cereal Abalone Mushroon

Spending per head: Approximately $18(Dinner)
