incredibly disappointing and wholly vapid food – even after tempered expectations – at the dean & deluca cafe in orchard central. I’ve been to their pretty shop – with highly magnified prices – before, read the dismal reviews everywhere on the blogosphere – and I still went because I was drawn to an image I saw online of their pancakes. it was a regrettable experience, and one that’s made me feel quite a bit foolish.

the pancakes seemed commercially pre-made and were rather stodgy, and the smoked salmon sandwich with scrambled eggs terribly salty. we left wholly disappointed – and it was a pretty expensive meal, especially for what we got – and so the emptiness of the cafe even at dinnertime (yes, I like breakfast for dinner) is rather justified. pretty place, pretty food, terrible taste – perhaps you might be better off going for their cheese counter or charcuterie and doing a takeaway with all their gourmet products. just steer clear of the food.

this place has been featured in a couple articles here and there, but never seemed to hold onto the limelight – which truly is a pity, as the food here is great; chinese food with a focus on healthy and nourishing ingredients, tasty and very creative to boot.

the restaurant promotes itself on the health-giving aspects of its offerings, and even has a menu catered to pregnant women (or women going through the confinement period), which I think might scare some diners off – an uncomfortable result of the general perception that healthy means bland – but the food truly is well-seasoned and appealing, and hearty enough to appeal to all you adverse to healthy(-labelled) food.

the restaurant is admittedly a little garish – with far too much opulence splashed across its furnishing and blinged up velvet chairs – but service is earnest, and the place filled up with customers (regulars, from the sound of their conversations). I’m still thinking about that fish dish – never seen before and very much lapped up even though I really dislike the taste of beer! – and it’s reasonably priced for what was a great family dinner.

I popped by this place for a brunch with friends and the food is rather innovative, and service very prompt – the menu sounds rather typical, with eggs, french toast and common european fare, but it’s the small details and their interpretation of these dishes that made it such a good meal. it’s become one of my current favorites.

the place is truly gorgeous, with high ceilings and luxurious finishings. it’s very peaceful, and that bar area at the back looks awfully welcoming. prices were reasonable, portions much larger than you’d expect – and next time I’ll stick to my egg en cocotte, and possibly get a slice of one of those lovely cakes on display.

done up with a bar, al fresco dining areas and two floors of sitting, this place has food you want to eat when you think of american chains like TGIF and billy bombers, but at standards those places aspire to. not revolutionary food, but very much well worth returning to – singapore doesn’t have many restaurants that do a large american menu well, and the surroundings are gorgeous.

I think in general I would rather head to handlebar for good american dining – the flavours there are more outstanding, though the portions here are competitive and it’s far more accessible.

prices here are on the high side, but on par with many restaurants about town – the charm here lies in your surroundings: the al fresco area is very pleasant to dine in, there’s a large bar on the ground floor of the refurbished colonial building they’re housed in, and the rochester area does promote lingering over a meal with friends. graze is just next door too, so you might want to head there for dessert if you’re so inclined.

this place is pretty awesome. their specialty is smooth, silky grass jelly – a black, translucent jelly without much discernible taste, usually served in large cubes for dessert or thin slivers in syrup as a drink – as a bed for other toppings: starches such as taro balls, beans cooked in sugar, and various other accoutrements.

I had mine with milk, two types of sugared beans – adzuki and kidney, as well as nata de coco (a chewy coconut water jelly). so simple, and beautifully good – you get them in four temperatures spanning the hot-to-very-cold spectrum, and the icy version was a refreshing post-dinner dessert.
