Full Wo Peng Restaurant review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2014/04/zi-char-wo-peng-restaurant.html

Since 2008, Wo Peng Restaurant has been serving up great tasting, authentic Cantonese cuisine with a modern spin. Helmed by master chef Mr. Julian Tam Kwok Fai, Wo Peng Restaurant is knwon for their impeccable service, home made Dim Sum, rustic double boiled soup, and for Poon Choi / Big Bowl Feast.
Ambience at Wo Peng Restaurant exudes an elegant opulence, with colours of white, gold, purple and black. Floral wallpaper adorn the walls, with bright lighting and furniture clothed in patterned cloths. I like that Wo Peng Restaurant has made good use of the limited floor space, the interior seems more spacious due to the openess of the place.
Service at Wo Peng Restaurant is impeccable. Staff are unobstrusive, quietly topping up tea and treating guests politely. While staff are able to make recommendations, some of them lack the ability to converse in English. As beftting a Cantonese restaurant, some of the staff are able to speak both Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese.
Food at Wo Peng Restaurant is similar to Zi Char, but upmarket. Focusing on traditional Chinese Cantonese dishes and Dim Sum, Wo Peng Restaurant is known to put a modern spin on traditional dishes, sometimes including ingredients from other cuisines in their dishes.

The Crispy White Bait With Salted Egg was a standout dish for me. Fried till crisp, and well coated with a savoury salty egg yolk, this was a fantastic appetizer.

I loved the Smoked Duck Breast With Camphor And Tea Leaf! The duck breast is still moist, and infused through with the smoky aroma of fragrant tea, making each bite a pleasure. And under the duck slices is... more duck! Generous portion and good value for money!

Hands down, this was easily the best Braised Ee Fu Noodles With Conpoy And Enoki Mushroom I've had! The fragrant aroma hits you the minute it's set upon the table, and you can tell it's good. The noodles are slippery and savoury, and the gravy of conpoy and mushrooms is the secret that makes this stand out!

Despite being recommended, the Lobster Bun Bao wasn't that great. Sure the lobster meat within was fresh, and the mushrooms enhanced the flavour, but I disliked the overall dry texture of this dish.

Full The Lawn Cafe review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2014/03/the-lawn-cafe-tasting-session.html

The Lawn Cafe is 2 plus years old hidden gem of a cafe is unlike any other. Casual, comfortable ambience? Check. Great tasting yet balanced food? Check. Premium ingredients? Check. Affordable price? Check. Flavours of both East and West? Check. Add in a brand new delivery service and The Lawn Cafe has a lot going for it!
I loved the ambience at The Lawn Cafe. The faux grass acts like a comfy carpet under your feet, and the furniture is casual and functional. Choose from either indoor seating or outdoor seating at The Lawn Cafe Biopolis. Personally, I prefer outdoor, as the Nanos building here is specifically designed to act like a wind tunnel, channelling cooling breeze along the exterior of the The Lawn Cafe.
The open kitchen and prep area provide interesting distractions while waiting to order, and I like the olden looking gas lamps hanging in a bunch. There was a blackboard near the cashier counter, and I noticed several diners accidentally knocking into it while ordering / making payment. Might be better if they moved it elsewhere.
The Lawn Cafe is largely self-service. Indicate your order on an order chit, then queue and make payment at the counter. Collect a buzzer, which will signal you to collect your order when ready.
But the real question is, what should you order at The Lawn Cafe? The base is either a Salad or Olive Rice, but there is a near endless combination of items to add on, including 13 grilled meats / seafood, 30 different salad toppings, and 12 types of salad dressing / sauces. This mind boggling variety means you could eat everyday at The Lawn Cafe and not get bored!
The basic Salad Bowl (SGD $7.90) comes with a base of fresh, crunchy lettuce, plus a choice of 5 different salad toppings, and 1 type of salad dressing sauce. The 30 salad toppings include a variety of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and others such as egg or tofu. You may then choose to add on 1 or 2 types of grilled meats or seafood.

Alternatively, choose the Olive Rice & Side Salad (SGD $7.90). Unlike the Thai or Greek Olive Rice, the version of Olive Rice at The Lawn Cafe is a Teochew recipe from the founder's grandmother. Each mouthful is a distinctly Asian flavour of spices. Lovely.

Sampled 10 of the 12 different salad dressing / sauces available at The Lawn Cafe. My personal favourites include Me So Spicy, a potent kick of fresh chili, sambal belachan and fresh mint; the Wasahoney, a sharp yet sweet combination of wasabi, honey and mayonnaise; and the Perky Sesame Ginger, a combination of sesame seed, coriander root and grated ginger that tastes like Chicken Rice.

The Chicken Breast With Maple Infusion is the 1st most popular grill addition at The Lawn Cafe. The moist and tender premium quality chicken breast is infused with sweet maple syrup, making it both savoury and sweet at once.

Full La Ventana review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2015/07/la-ventana-tasting-session.html

Opened in June 2015, the first thing I learnt about La Ventana is that it's distinctly Catalan cuisine, not Spanish cuisine. This distinction is important, because chef and the staff all hail from the Catalonia region, and they consider themselves an independent country.
La Ventana Exterior

La Ventana Exterior

Ambience at La Ventana is quaint and cozy, like a country style home. This intimate 80-seater (plus) restaurant is set within the lush greenery of Dempsey Hill, styled to resemble the Barcelona countryside. The comfortable, modern wooden and rattan furniture, bespoke decor of wine bottles and handcrafted Catalonia art plates, classical background music from Spain, and nautical colours of blue-green / turquoise, white, wood, and navy, is welcoming with a suitable atmosphere for long, slow meals.

Service at La Ventana is personalised, efficient, and professional, as befits a fine dining restaurant. The kitchen team mostly hails from Barcelona and the Catalonia region, while the front of house staff hail from throughout Spain, or Singapore. No problems conversing in English or Spanish. There is an old-world, elegant sophistication to the service, staff will serve all the ladies first, followed by the gentlemen, then briefly introduce each dish and its history. Very knowledgable, I'm impressed. They also come around regularly to check on the progress of your meal, offer more drinks, or proactively enquire if they can clear empty / dirty plates.

Pigeon Paella

Food at La Ventana is authentic Catalonia cuisine. Michelin-starred Chef Carles Gaig, of the famed Barcelona family restaurant Taberna d’en Gaig (which his family established in 1869), set up La Ventana, which is managed by his daughter Nuria Gibert, and her husband Chef Eduard Castellarnau. Dishes are known to engage the senses; with colouful, intricate plating and presentation, aromatic fragrances of herbs and spices, textures which are perfectly executed and compliment, and tastes which are bold, full of flavour. Tapas portions are suitably small, while main course portions are large and could be shared. Prices reflect the high-end, fine dining status of La Ventana, budget about SGD $85 or more per person, for a meal here.

The Canelon Since 1869 (SGD $12) was the 1st dish ever created by chef's family, over 4 generations ago, when they first established their restaurant. Featuring a traditional cannelloni (a baked cylindrical pasta covered in sauce), stuffed with foie gras, minced beef, minced pork, and soaked in truffle cream, the dish is savoury, meaty, creamy, luxurious, full of flavour, and utterly decadent. Simple, straight forward, clean plating, but rather messy to eat. The Canelon Since 1869 is chef's proudest dish, a true family legacy, and the dish he will first ask you about (if you order it). One of the signature dishes of La Ventana. While it wasn't our favourite dish, we all agreed that it's very good. Worth ordering!

I loved the Crispy Suckling Pig (SGD $38)! Featuring a large boneless slab of suckling pig, with tender and moist pork meat that isn't gamey in taste! Topped with a thin, crisp, savoury skin, which cracks beautifully. A tart, sour sweet strawberry salad is served alongside, and the sharpness of the vinaigrette pairs well with the savoury sweetness of the pork. Plating is clean and modern, with the square design offset by the gravy swoosh, and the diagonal plating of ingredients. The pork skin has a thin layer of fat, which is easily removed if you don't want it. Absolutely loved this dish, which left me wanting more! Highly recommended!

Full Restaurant Home review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2014/11/restaurant-home-tasting-session.html

Helmed by award-winning Singaporean celebrity chef Tan Yong Hua, Restaurant Home in The Rail Mall promises a homely, comfortable communal dining experience, with tasty, classic Chinese and Singaporean zi char dishes prepared using traditional methods. Founded in September 2013, at Restaurant Home, the philosophy of “家”, or "Jiā", represents more than just "Home", it also represents "Family", where the staff are welcoming and friendly, and the deeply personal zi char dishes from Chef Tan are like Chinese soul food.
Restaurant Home Exterior

Restaurant Home Exterior

Ambience at Restaurant Home, as befits the name, is homely and comfortable. Walking in, you'll feel like you've stepped into a relative's house! Clean, brightly lit, with rosewood furnishings in mahogany and pearl, the open dining room with its high ceiling lends a sense of space.

Service at Restaurant Home is professional and efficient. I find staff to be welcoming and friendly, offering greetings and farewells. They're also quick at seating guests, and clearing away dirty plates. I commend their proactiveness in offering to change plates for diners, their unobtrusiveness at topping up tea, and their ability to not only portion dishes evenly, but present it beautifully even after portioning as well.

Food at Restaurant Home revolves primarily around classic dishes from the cuisine of China, specifically, the regions of Beijing and Guangzhou, as well as classic Singapore Zi Char style dishes. Executive Chef and Restaurant Home co-founder Tan Yong Hua has 2 decades of culinary experience under his belt, and is perhaps best known for clinching the gold medal at the 6th World Championship of Chinese Cuisine in 2008, as well as being the 1st Singaporean chef to triumph in the Iron Chef Thailand challenge in 2013.

Not surprising then, that each dish at Restaurant Home is tasty, packed with flavour, and beautifully presented. Restaurant Home encourages communal dining, so portion sizes are much too large for just 1 person, and a minimum of 2 diners is recommended, although 4 or more diners is better value for money. I think the biggest drawback of dining at Restaurant Home is their high price, due to the use of premium ingredients, and traditional cooking methods that are both painstaking and time-consuming. Slightly more expensive than other Chinese fine dining restaurants, budget SGD $30 or more per person for lunch, and budget SGD $65 or more per person for dinner here, especially if you order fish or seafood.

The Barbecued Peking Duck with Lychee Wood (SGD $68 Whole Duck) is Chef Tan's signature dish. If you order a whole duck, it's presented in 3 stages. First, the Crispy Skin, cut from the duck breast, is served with a zesty sugar. I find the skin to be very crisp and flavourful, not oily at all, extremely satisfiying. Secondly, the sliced Duck Meat is served with wraps / crepes, leeks, cucumbers, and a sweet hoisin sauce. I like the contrast of textures, with the crunch of the vegetables against the tender, tasty duck meat, cut through with a balance of savoury and sweet. However, because the ducks here have little fat under the skin, the meat tends to be on the dry side. I also find the wraps / crepes to be slightly thick. Thirdly, for an additional SGD $10, the remainder of the odd cuts of the duck meat can be prepared in your choice of a stew / soup, a stir fry with ginger and onion, or deep fried with garlic and chili.

The Baked Marble Goby in Claypot with Chef Tan in-house Recipe (SGD $9 / 100gm) is another signature dish, derived from a classic Guangzhou Cantonese dish, but again with Chef Tan's unique spin. A mix of local spices like lemongrass, galangal, and spring onions are stir fried, then heaped on a large, fresh marble goby fish, along with ginger and parsely, then baked in a claypot. This results in a very tender, fragrant fish, with a mind-blowing, savoury sauce, infused through with the aromatics.

I have high regard for the Homemade Egg Bean Curd with Shrimp Paste, Crabmeat and Roe in Pi Pa Style (SGD $36). Not just because the sefood is fresh, and painstakingly deshelled. It's because the tofu itself is freshly made daily, using premium quality soybeans, and the process of hand making the tofu is both time-consuming and labourious. But this imparts the tofu a wonderful fragrance, packed with flavour, and renders the texture very smooth, light, and airy. Just one bite, and you'll be able to taste the difference! So smooth, so soft, so tasty... yum.

I haven't had a unique, memorable dessert like the Chilled Rosella Flower Jelly with Diced Mango (SGD $6) in a long time, totally outstanding! Refreshing, fragrant, rosella flower jelly, with a beautiful red purple hue, slighlty sour, slightly sweet, and so smooth that it slides down the throat. Balanced with fresh cubes of diced mango, each mouthful awakens the sensations in your mouth. Absolutely delicious and yummy, highly recommended!

The Chilled Japanese Pumpkin Puree with Black Glutinous Rice Served in Pumpkin (SGD $10) was presented beautifully, served in a hollowed out pumpkin! It's so cute! Within is a smooth, slightly sweet, very fragrant pumpkin puree, flavoured with sticky sweet black glutinous rice. This modern dessert may not go down too well with those of a traditional palate, but is evident of Chef Tan Yong Hua's creativity and passion for innovation. Worth a try!

Overall, Restaurant Home is a great place for a Chinese fine dining meal, provided you're willing to splurge. With great tasting, classic Chinese dishes, friendly service, and a bunch of family and friends, you'll have a great time at Restaurant Home.

Founded in 2006, Etna Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is known for its authentic Italian Sicilian cuisine, use of fresh, premium ingredients, and its impeccable service. Named after Mount Etna, an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily, Etna Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria ensures a great dining experience through its tasty, authentic Italian food and warm hospitality. It's even been awarded the Ospitalita Italiana Gold Seal, an award which is presented by the Italian government / Italian embassies to recognise superb Italian restaurants.

Ambience at Etna Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is semi-formal. Decor brings to mind restaurants along the coasts of Sicily, with walls of red brick, brightly lit rooms, and fine tableware. Etna Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria generally has a small floor space that is packed tightly, this causes a rather noisy atmosphere when it's crowded. They also have a small outdoor al-fresco dining area. A chalkboard along the counter lists the daily specials, and I like that tables are spacious enough to accomodate their large serving plates.

Service at Etna Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is impeccable, befitting a fine dining establishment. Staff will welcome you, and seating is done quickly. I like that staff are knowledgable on the menu, as well as the daily specials, able to make recommendations, including pairing of wine. Orders are fulfilled relatively quickly, and dirty plates are also cleared efficiently. They're proactive, offering to change plates after several courses. I also like that staff come round to check on your dining experience, as well as ask for feedback. Excellent!

Food at Etna Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria revolves around Italian cuisine, specifically, dishes from Sicily. Fresh, premium ingredients are imported, and dishes are crafted according to traditional, authentic recipes, in large portions suitable for sharing. I love the clean presentation of the dishes, and generally taste fresh, packed with flavour. Ingredients are prepared simply and allowed to shine. Prices are comparable to other fine dining establishments, budget about SGD $35 or more per person for a meal here.

A daily special, the Fresh Burrata With Parma Ham (SGD $42) is not always available, but is a great appetizer to order if you see it on the chalkboard. Large enough to share between 4 people, the burrata, which is made with mozzarella and cream, is soft, creamy, and fresh. Pair each mouthful of the smooth, creamy cheese with fresh arugula / eruca sativa, juicy cherry tomatoes, and salty, smoky parma ham / prosciutto crudo for an explosion of flavour.

The Linguine Al Granchio (SGD $27) features perfectly done linguine and fresh crab meat, in a savoury, reduced lobster bisque that is packed with crustacean flavour. Topped with a slightly salty soft shell crab, this is a bold dish. Pretty good!
Linguine Al Granchio

Linguine Al Granchio

The Tiramisu Al Pistacchio Di Bronte (SGD $14) didn't have that intense coffee flavour normally associated with this dessert, but it has a sweet, crunchy pistachio crust, made according to an authentic recipe from the town of Bronte, Sicily, in the Province Of Catania, South Italy. Could be better if it had a stronger espresso flavour.
