Quirky Breakfast Hipster Cafe  Smile Apr 20, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes | Pasta | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

Joining the ranks of Hipster cafes is Drury Lane Cafe, named after the street in London where the Muffin Man (in the popular nursury rhyme) lives. Not surprisingly then, Drury Lane Cafe offers a variety of promising home baked muffins and pastries, ranging from classics to quirky twists. Drury Lane Cafe is also popular for its all day breakfast / brunch, and artisan coffee.
Ambience at Drury Lane Cafe differs depending on which level you dine in. The first floor is brightly lit by natural sunlight due to the glass panelled entrance, and the decor of coffee bags and wooden crates lend an air of ecological friendliness. But the smell of cooking in the poorly ventilated first floor means you'll walk away with smells on your clothing.

Boxes And Table

In contrast, the second floor of Drury Lane Cafe is spacious and well ventilated, perfect for cozy, intimate dining. However, the second floor is also dimly lit, almost dark in some areas, save for seats near the windows. Also, some parts are unclean and poorly maintained.
Drury Lane Cafe Seating

Drury Lane Cafe Seating

Service at Drury Lane Cafe is decent. Order at the cashier, but food will be served to you, especially if you're at the second floor. Staff are young, mostly students working part time, but friendly, chirpy, polite and helpful.
Food at Drury Lane Cafe revolves around London / Melbourne inspired all day breakfast / brunch, mostly western style items. Classics like the Big Breakfast or Baked Eggs make an appearance, but often with creative names (Cloud 9.4, Big 94, 94 Goes Green) derived from the Drury Lane Cafe address, 94 Tanjong Pagar Road.
Drury Lane Cafe has a small 'specials' menu, which feature 3 or 4 house breakfast creations. The specials menu is changed weekly, and seems to be a platform for the chef to experiment with different combination of breakfast ingredients.
The Mocha (SGD $4.50) and Latte (SGD $4.50) here are pretty good, above average in terms of taste. Well balanced strength, with a fragrant aroma, and a slightly thin body. But the Latte art is beautiful and well executed, though their range seems a bit limited.

Kaya Toast Eggs Benedict?! Why not? Singaporeans already eat runny soft boiled eggs with kaya toast, so why not pair runny poached eggs with kaya toast instead? The combination is so simple and common sense once you see it, it makes me wonder why no one else has ever tried it before!
The Kaya Toast Eggs Benedict (SGD $11) are a weekly special on the menu, and is not always available. The poached egg complements the sweetness of the kaya, and the crisp toast is perfect for soaking up the runny yolk.

The Candy Bar Pie (SGD $5) is a decadent dessert pastry filled with peanut butter nougat and salted caramel on a graham cracker biscuit crumb crust and topped with chocolate glaze and a salted pretzel. Intensely sweet and nearly impossible to finish by oneself, this is better off shared.

Full Madame Patisserie review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2014/04/madame-patisserie-tasting-session.html

Originally operating as a bakery / patisserie at Boat Quay, Madame Patisserie has since converted its original outlet into a casual cafe, and in January 2014, opened a bistro in Mackenzie, in the Selegie area.

Madame Patisserie retains the original shophouse facade, and the floor space at Mackenzie spans 3 shops. Divided into a bar, cafe, and private function room with kitchen, the ambience at Madame Patisserie features warm lighting within its limited space. Furniture is comfortable and modern, with colour schemes of black, white and wood.

Service at Madame Patisserie is friendly and personal. Staff are very welcoming, happy, and willing to assist. The chef, Regis, often walks around and mingles with customers to get feedback. Some of the staff are dual trained, working both the bar and serving tables.

The Rucola Beef (SGD $17.90) is made for sharing, with thinly sliced and seared grilled beef, served on fresh rocket leaves and cherry tomatoes, drizzled with a slightly salty and savoury wafu dressing, and garnished with crisp fried shallots. Odd combination, but the crunch of the shallots contrasted well with the moist and tender beef.

The Pan Seared Foie Gras (SGD $20.90) is a perfect appetizer for sharing. The foie gras is perfectly seared and absolutely flavourful with just a hint of grilled / roasted taste, and the fatty richness is cut with a sharp and tangy maple balsamic vinaigrette. Tiny cubes of apples, strawberries and tomatoes round off the sweetness of the dish, and the garnish of orange slices go well with the savoury foie gras. The presentation with an upright slice of crisp toast makes for an interesting visual.

I loved the Grilled Chicken Roulade (SGD $16.90)! The tender grilled chicken is very tasty, and the roll is tightly packed, such that cutting into it doesn't make it fall apart. Served with a nicely grilled tomato, sauteed broccoli and shiitake mushrooms, and the signature smooth and creamy mashed potato mousse. Easily among the better main dishes here!

The house signature dish of Madame Patisserie, and easily the most well recieved and loved dish of the evening, the Bacon Bomb (SGD $16.90) is decadent goodness. A savoury, prefectly grilled portobello mushrooms is topped with fresh sliced tomato and creamy, softly cooked eggs, then wrapped in strips of grilled bacon, and served on a creamy mashed potato mousse. Needless to say, this is highly recommended, worry about the calories later!

Full BWB (Burger VS Wings + Bar) review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2014/01/bwb-burger-vs-wings-bar.html

Operating under the Kitchen Language Group, the 3 week old BWB (Burger VS Wings + Bar) is a new concept restaurant where a constant food fight is taking place, in a metaphorical sense. The competition is between the chef specialising in burgers, and the chef specialising in chicken wings, but the true winner is the customer!

The ambience at BWB (Burger VS Wings + Bar) is designed to be a chill, relaxing place for groups. In tandem with its concept, BWB (Burger VS Wings + Bar) is designed to resemble a boxing ring, with boxing memorabilia such as punching bags, boxing gloves, and various championship fight posters. All this lends an element of fun to its casual atmosphere.

I loved the sticky, creamy texture of peanut butter on the Tyson Peanut Butter Burger (SGD $21.90), which was evenly coated on the thick and juicy angus beef patty. The sunny side up egg, fresh arugula, smoky bacon and sharp melted cheddar rounded out the taste profile of this magnificanet burger. The burger bun itself was special, made from brioche and infused with a hint sun-dried tomatoes.

I liked the fresh, large portion of breaded izumi fish fillet on the Pacific Izumi Fish Burger (SGD $15.80). Packed within the sun-dried tomato brioche burger buns along with a sunny side up egg, cucumber, arugula, bacon and tartar sauce, this is the perfect burger for the health conscious, or those looking for a lighter meal. I tried adding the honey mustard sauce from another dish, which I thought enhanced the overall taste.

The BWB Classic Heavyweight Burger (SGD $19.90), with the classic burger ingredients of smoky bacon, fresh tomato and onions, a sunny side up egg, all packed with a tender, juicy angus beef patty, topped with savoury chili con carne and french mustard within a sesame brioche burger bun. Totally divine, I'm in burger heaven!

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, the Wagyu Beef Black Burger (SGD $28) was served. This montrosity of a burger has an excellent, well grilled and juicy wagyu beef patty, slathered with barbecue sauce, which shines through the toppings of avocado, tomatoes, rocket leaves, melted cheddar cheese and bacon. They even managed to stuff beer battered onion rings inside! The burger bun is unique as well, featuring a bamboo charcoal infused brioche, quite fragrant!

Not for the faint of heart, the spicy Hot Buffalo Wings (SGD $15.80) come coated in 3 levels of hot sauce; mild, medium, and suicide. We tried the medium level, and very nearly died from the spiciness of it... But it was so good! The chicken meat is juicy, tasty, and comes clean off the bone, a sign of excellent cooking. For the ultimate spicy challenge, try the Suicide Hot Buffalo Wings with house cocktail The Challenger.

An Italian Christmas Dinner  Smile Dec 24, 2013

Full Pasta Fresca Da Salvatore review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2013/12/pasta-fresca-da-salvatore-tasting.html

To celebrate the festive season, Pasta Fresca Da Salvatore is offering a limited time, 5-course Christmas menu till the end of December 2013. Inspired by dishes prepared in South Italy, Pasta Fresca Da Salvatore imports only the freshest ingredients for this special menu.

Ambience at Pasta Fresca is designed to be rustic, comfortable and homely, making you feel as if you've just stepped into an Italian friend's home. Space is carefully laid out and the menu is planned to allow guests to socialise and linger over conversation.

Service at Pasta Fresca flows well with the homely theme, as staff are friendly and welcoming. Attentive and observant in their service, I especially liked that Pasta Fresca staff are unobstrusive, making sure that your dining experience is comfortable. I liked that they check, by feel of your water glass, whether you were drinking warm or cold water. This attention to details was evident throughout the meal.

The Tagliere Misto, from the regular menu, is a platter of cold cuts, including high quality pork salami and spek, with cheddar, goat cheese and whole olives. I loved the authentic taste of the cold cuts, the flavour of the meat really shines through.

The Zuppa Di Zucca E Crema Di Latte is the soup starter on the Christmas menu. A rich and creamy pumpkin soup is served in a cute mug, with cream and herbed croutons. I liked that the soup was well balanced, not too overpowering or underwhelming, and that you can taste the pumpkin flavour.

The Linguine Al Nero In Salsa Gamberi E Peperoni from the Christmas menu has home made squid ink linguine with fresh cherry tomates in a red pepper sauce, which was excellent! Probably my favourite dish of the evening! The prawns were big and meaty, but slightly lacking in the crustacean taste.

The Al Funghi E Salsiccia, or penne pasta in a cream sauce with sauteed mushrooms and home made Italian sausage, is from the regular menu. Loved the taste of the home made sausage, and overall this dish is quite filling!

The other main on the Christmas menu, the Pesce Spada In Panura Su Salsa Alla Mediterranea E Verdure Saltate Al Burro E Prezzemolo features pan fried breaded swordfish fillets, with buttered broccoli and carrots in a pomodoro tomato sauce. I liked that you can taste the tomato is the sauce, a sign of freshness and made by hand, rather than from the canned variety. I also like the texture of the pan fried breaded swordfish fillets, semi-firm but yields to the bite.

Pasta Fresca Da Salvatore Christmas menu is only available till the end of December 2013, and this 5-course set meal costs SGD $39.90 per person. They also offer wine to pair with the dishes. The items from the regular menu are available at all their outlets.

Full Checkers Brasserie review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2013/12/checkers-brasserie-tasting-session.html

Located at the lobby of Hilton Hotel Singapore, Checkers Brasserie hosts a weekly Sunday Brunch Buffet designed around freshly prepared-to-order dishes at live cooking stations. With a revamped menu revolving around a selection of Eggs Specialties and Gourmet Bites, which can be ordered an unlimited number of times, Checkers Brasserie hopes to allow diners more time to mingle and socialise instead of waiting for food from the buffet line.

Ambience at Checkers Brasserie evokes the rustic, countryside feel, with wooden panelling and summer colours. Layout is spacious, with the glass panels at the side letting in natural light and framing the greenery of the garden outside. While ambient light is sufficient, I noticed the corners of Checkers Brasserie tends to be darker. The main showpiece is the well thought out display of the buffet spread, laid out in logical sequence.

Service at Checkers Brasserie is efficient, friendly, and professional. Staff seem more than happy to assist, and orders don't take too long to fulfill. Finished plates are cleared quickly. I noticed that most of the senior staff are very familiar with the food and drinks available, though not everyone in the rank and file is able to answer queries.

The Eggs Specialties are the highlight on the Sunday Brunch Buffet menu at Checkers Brasserie, with a choice of 6 different styles of eggs, prepared in international styles. You don't have to wait at the counter, just place your order and staff will serve it to your table when ready. You can order as many rounds of the Eggs Specialities as you wish.
Eggs Modern

Eggs Modern

The Modern style eggs are served in a mini cauldron, with a free range egg precisely cooked at 45 degrees celsius, on a bed of savoury chanterelle mushrooms and mushroom gravy. This was quite a stand out dish for me, really excellent combinaion of flavours. Pair this with crisp bread for maximum satisfaction.
Beef Bourguignon

Beef Bourguignon

The Beef Bourguignon consists of tender, slow braised beef cheeks on a bed of bacon, mushrooms, onions, and truffle oil infused polenta, with a red wine sauce. I felt this was probably the best of the Gourmet Bites, just loved the tender meat and aromatic flavour profile of the dish.

Checkers Brasserie Sunday Brunch Buffet is only available on Sunday from 11.45am - 3pm. Items on this menu can be specially ordered ala-carte on other days. Prices start at SGD $80 per person, for a free flow of the regular buffet, Eggs Specialities, Gourmet Bites and smoothies / water / juices / coffee / tea. For free flow of wines or cocktails, add additional SGD $18. The luxurious Champagne Brunch starts at SGD $128.
