Full Elemen review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2015/10/elemen.html

Opened in June 2015 by the Koufu Group, Elemen is a wholesome, modern vegetarian / meat-free restaurant, offering delicious Western and Asian cuisine made using fresh, natural ingredients. Despite a rather quiet opening and little publicity, Elemen has managed to pull in crowds via strong word-of-mouth from those who have dined here before, thanks to their overall good ambience, service, and food.

Ambience at Elemen is modern zen, clean, and comfortable. While the exterior is rather plain and unassuming, blending into the background of the other shops, the interior is brightly lit with natural vibes, in calming colours of white, grey, wood, and leaf green hues. Furniture within the spacious area is very comfortable, with soft cushions for booths. Very zen, tranquil feeling, time passes by so quickly here!

Service at Elemen started off fantastic, with the most experienced senior staff introducing himself, and providing explanations on the menu. Very personalised, engaging service. However, the service discrepancy is stark, the younger / newer staff aren't as engaging, and not that attentive. While they check for feedback on the dining experience, and respond quickly to requests, attracting their attention may take awhile. The service level is still good, but disjointed, and could potentially be so much better.

Food at Elemen is pure vegetarian, with modern Western and Asian dishes. Not like your typical Zi Char, more akin to a fine dining restaurant style. They offer a pure set meal concept, a 5-course set meal for lunch, and a 8-course set meal for dinner, where you choose from a selection of over 30 menu items. Ala-carte is not available, and there are no prices for individual dishes. You can still request for ala-carte, but prices are naturally more expensive. For comparison, their 8-course set meal costs about SGD $35 per person, but 1 ala-carte main dish costs about SGD $16. Set meal portions are designed for individuals, and it's possible to finish on your own, though it's also possible to share for communal dining.

Full Manbok review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2015/10/manbok-chinatown-korean-bbq-steamboat.html

Manbok Chinatown Korean BBQ & Steamboat in Singapore Chinatown has been around for a while now. Among the more well known of the Korean barbecue and steamboat concept, particularly for their value for money prices, owner Mr. Tan tells us that the name 'Manbok Chinatown Korean BBQ & Steamboat' also represents 'a fortune of millions' in Mandarin!

Ambience at Manbok is decent for an indoor barbecue outlet. The biggest bugbear of such establishments is smell, fortunately, the exhaust nozzels directly above each table takes care of the majority of it. There is still some lingering smell of cooking, but this subsides quickly, a lot better than other places! Furnishings are spacious and functional enough for comfort, and I like the brightly lit area. Food displays are clearly labelled and kept chilled, but the salad / condiment corner is hidden behind a wall and not immediately visible.

Service at Manbok is polite and efficient. Staff have basic working product knowledge, able to explain in simple English / Mandarin the food available, as well as guide you how to operate the barbecue grill on the table. I also commend them for coming around often to change the grilling plate when it turns black from grilling. They also proactively clear away empty / dirty plates, rather than letting it pile up on your table. Good!

Food at Manbok is all about meat... a carnivore's dream! The star is the selection of 10 different cuts of meat (beef, pork, chicken) for barbecue / grilling, as well as the selection of seafood for the steamboat. The selection of salads is rather small though. Manbok also offers a small selection of 3 cooked food items, these are changed daily for returning diners. Communal dining is a must here, at least 2 people, though a group of 4 or more is recommended. Their Korean food is authentic and generally tasty, but their non-Korean food tends to be rather flat and not that tasty. Prices are reasonably cheaper than elsewhere, budget about SGD $18 for lunch, and SGD $32 for dinner, per person.

The highlight of a meal here is the beautiful, large slabs of meat, chilled on ice. Pick from 10 different cuts! My personal favourites would be the Marinated Beef Short Rib, and the Marinated Pork Belly.

Loved the Maneul Dak Ganjang / Garlic Soy Sauce Chicken Wings, this is easily the best cooked food item here! The chicken wings have a crisp, savoury, slightly salty skin that is fragrant with garlic. The chicken meat is moist and tender, coming off the bone easily. Chef tells us he only makes this in small batches, as the skin gets soggy when it cools, so it has to be eaten quickly!

Full FatCat Ice Cream Bar review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2015/10/fatcat-ice-cream-bar.html

Opening their doors on 1st January 2015, it's safe to say that FatCat Ice Cream Bar is among the hottest dessert cafes of 2015. Known for their chef made (made from scratch!), creative ice cream flavours, and unique, whimsical plated desserts, FatCat Ice Cream Bar is so named because its founders are explorers of gourmet food; sophisticated, playful, curious, mysterious, adventurous.
Ice Cream Bars

Ice Cream Bars

Ambience at FatCat Ice Cream Bar has a modern industrial feel, with its low lighting, dark coloured walls, rustic chalkboards, and sturdy furniture of metal and wood. The biggest eye-catcher here is their large, brightly lit ice cream display, showcasing all the daily flavours. As FatCat Ice Cream Bar is almost always constantly packed, expect ambient noise levels to be high.

Service at FatCat Ice Cream Bar is partial self-service. Sampling, ordering, and payment is done over the counter, which results in the entrance getting very cramped with people. Staff do serve orders to your table, and they also introduce and describe the nuances of each dish, so thumbs up for their product knowledge! Not everything is available daily, as FatCat Ice Cream Bar changes its menu everyday, so check with the staff before ordering.

Food at FatCat Ice Cream Bar is all about modern, creative desserts, in particular, ice cream and waffles. Generally, I find all their items here pack good flavour, and have pretty, photograph ready presentations. Only fresh ingredients are used, and the founders regularly introduce new items. Note that limited quantities are produced each day, so visiting earlier in the day is recommended. Portions are designed for sharing, and prices are typical of a dessert cafe, budget about SGD $9 per person.

The Lime Mojito Sphere (SGD $4.50) are delightful bites that burst with flavour in the mouth! A bubble of lime juice and rum, garnished with lemon peel, lime zest, and edible herbs, this incredible 1-bite dessert is perfect as a start, and just as good to finish a meal here!

The Deconstructed Strawberry Shortcake (SGD $12) is a creative, whimsical, playful dessert experiment. A bowl of soft Japanese sponge cake and sliced fresh strawberries, topped with sour strawberry gel and soft marshmallows, sitting on a bed of curry crumble with popping candy, with garnishings of strawberry compote, edible elderflowers, and strawberry crisps. Mix it all, and try to get every component in 1 bite for best flavour results, as eaten separately, it's rather average. Love the combination of textures and tastes, good dessert!

Full Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2015/10/kopi-tiam-swissotel-tasting-session.html

For over 22 years, Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) has been serving up premium renditions of classic, local Singaporean dishes, in a smart casual setting. Popular favourites such as Carrot Cake and Laksa feature on the extensive menu, and while quality and taste is pretty good, high prices may be a barrier for the everyman / common people to dine at Kopi Tiam (Swissotel). On a bigger perspective though, the concept offered by Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) is 1 possible solution to saving / curating our local Singapore food heritage. By making local dishes premium (higher quality ingredients, bigger portions, better presentation), it ensures hawkers can have a better livelihood (more profits), in turn ensuring the continuing legacy of Singaporean food!
Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) Exterior

Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) Exterior

Ambience at Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) is a mix of modern and traditional coffee shops. Sturdy, casual wooden furniture in bright colours of orange and green hues line the spacious interior, which is lit by warm, ambient lighting and bright spotlights. Black-and-white posters of traditional Singaporean coffee shop items adorn the walls, while (rather gaudy) touches of Singaporean decor (flags, utensils, mugs, Tiger beer boxes) scream "This is Singapore!".
Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) Interior

Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) Interior

Service at Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) is professional and courteous, similar to restaurant quality service. Staff are quick to greet and seat you, and when asked, are able to make recommendations from the menu, as well as provide basic descriptions of dishes. I like that they enquired about dietary restrictions before they made the recommendations.

Food at Kopi Tiam (Swissotel) consists of premium versions of traditional Singaporean favourites, presented in local rustic style. In general, there are 2 kinds of Singaporean dishes, the 1st category are those dishes which can be improved by having premium, higher quality ingredients, the 2nd category are dishes which can be improved by having more skill / ability / experience in cooking. At Kopi Tiam (Swissotel), the 1st category fares much better, dishes made from spice pastes (laksa, rendang, rojak) are much tastier, and because the ingredients are fresher / higher quality, the dish truely shines. However, the 2nd category (requires skill) tends to fall flat (hokkien mee, carrot cake), lacking wok hei / breath of the wok. Just isn't as tasty as those you get from hawkers who have been frying that 1 dish for over 20 years.
Merlion Mugs

Loved the Local Chinese Salad - Rojak (SGD $16), which was wonderfully balanced with its savoury, salty, sweet, and sour flavours! The fruits and vegetables (pineapple, bean sprouts, cucumber, turnip, kang kong / water spinach leaves) within are fresh, juicy, and crunchy, while the dough fritters are properly crisp. The dark, spicy prawn paste with crushed peanuts is sufficient to coat all the ingredients, yet isn't too thin in texture.

The rich, lemak, savoury spicy soup / broth of the Signature Kopi Tiam Laksa (SGD $20) makes this dish a standout! Thick rice noodles, along with generous garnishings of fish cake slices, shredded chicken, fresh deshelled prawns, cucumber, bean sprouts, quail eggs, and tau pok / tofu puffs complete this yummy dish. Dunk some sambal belacan chili paste into it for more flavour. Now if only you could choose to add cockles!

Full Dragon Bowl review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2015/09/zi-char-dragon-bowl.html

Opening its doors in February 2015, Dragon Bowl is more than an up-market Chinese Zi Char restaurant, offering contemporary Cantonese cuisine in a comfortable, modern setting. With a wide variety of options on the menu, at various price points, Dragon Bowl restaurant attempts to differentiate itself via its quality service and cuisine.
Dragon Bowl Exterior

Dragon Bowl Exterior

Ambience at Dragon Bowl restaurant is modern and elegant, with clean lines, white walls, contemporary furnishings, and touches of crystal. The open interior lends a feeling of sophistication and space, but can also get rather noisy if the place is packed. The refrigerated display case and large banners out front draw the eyes.

Service at Dragon Bowl is professional, efficient, and courteous. I understand the staff are mostly former hospitality / hotel service personnel, which accounts for the pretty good service. They'll do their best to accomodate requests, are rather observant, attend to diners quickly, and are knowledgable enough to make astute recommendations.

Food at Dragon Bowl is distinctly Chinese Cantonese, with a selection of other Chinese Zi Char style dishes, only modernised. Plating is modern contemporary and rather pretty, but Head Chef Leong ensures that traditional, comfort flavours are still present in each dish. Portions are designed for sharing, and prices reflect the mid range market Dragon Bowl is going for, budget about SGD $27 per person for a meal here.

The Cantonese are known for their excellent soups, so this double boiled Pork Rib And Lotus Root Soup (SGD $49.80 Set Meal) didn't disappoint! The pork ribs and lotus roots within are soft and tender, but the star is the fragrant soup / broth, tasty with savoury sweet flavour from the pork meat and herbs. Very drinkable, pure comfort starter to whet the appetite.

The Barbecued Pork With Honey (SGD $12) was very good, nice char on the outside, tender and moist pork meat with silvers of fat, savoury and sweet but not overly so. Definitely worth ordering more than once!

The Steamed Sea Bass Fish In Hong Kong Style (SGD $35.75) features a large, fresh, seabass fish, steamed with aromatics in a dark, savoury salty, soy broth. The white meat of the fish flakes off easily, coming clean off the bone. Very good for the price!
