Styled as a casual Italian meets Southeast Asian fusion restaurant, Supply & Demand, which is operated by the Cre8 Group, first opened in the Esplanade in September 2013, with their second outlet in Orchard Gateway opening in May 2014. While it started life as a modern Italian Peruvian bistro and rooftop bar, Supply & Demand, whose name references a business economics term, has since evolved by offering more familiar flavours.

Ambience at Supply & Demand is one of the highlights. Industrial chic meets faux greenery, with an eclectic mix of furnishings that resemble both a European countryside home, as well as a streetside cafe. Along with warm decorative lights, wooden shelves lined with books and bottles of wine, faux trees, faux lawn carpets, soft leaf green cushions, and a open kitchen, Supply & Demand exudes a comfortable feel, the sort of place you can linger and pass the day. Love the place!

Service at Supply & Demand is decent enough, but forgettable. Staff are friendly, polite, and efficient, quick to seat diners and take orders. Empty / dirty tables are cleared quickly. Staff display very simple product knowledge, though this is alleviated somewhat as the menu has ample descriptions of each dish. But there is very little engagement overall, and seeing as this is primarily an Italian restaurant, I expected a lot more interaction.

Food at Supply & Demand is all about classic, rustic, Italian dishes in hearty portions. There is also an experimental selection of fusion dishes, inspired by Southeast Asian flavours that the founders experienced on their travels. The Peruvian aspect seems to have been mostly dropped. Generally, I find most dishes here to be decently executed, with above average taste. Prices are affordable for the quality of food, and good value for money, budget about SGD $27 per person for a meal here (without drinks). No surprise that Supply & Demand is often crowded at meal times!

Brewed from barley malts, the Beer Peroni Nastro Azzurro (SGD $9 / $15) is a straw golden coloured pale Roman lager, whose name means 'Blue Ribbon' in Italian. A really light European beer, refreshing and great for summer days!

The Polenta Piccolo (SGD $17) features 2 poached eggs over 2 blocks of fried polenta cake, topped with thinly sliced prosciutto crudo di parma / parma ham, drizzled with hollandaise sauce, and sprinkles of grana padano cheese, with a garden salad on the side. I loved how the perfectly poached, runny egg yolk mixed with the polenta cake, which has a nice crisp exterior, and a soft grainy interior. The polenta cake is stuffed with summer vegetables, such as carrot, zucchini, and spinach, and I love its savoury sweet taste.

Founded in August 2014 by ex-banker turned restauranteur Lawrence Ngan, Bridge Restaurant & Bar along Seah Street offers well crafted, Modern European fine dining at value for money prices. Head Chef of Bridge Restaurant & Bar, Sky Chan Wai Khang, draws on his years of experience in various fine dining restaurants, such as Joel Robuchon and JAAN, to create dishes that delight and dazzle the senses.

Ambience at Bridge Restaurant & Bar is inviting and relaxing. Styled like a modern bistro, with low ambient lighting, a wide floor space, modern furniture with clean, curved lines, in colours of wood, yellow, white, and black. A long, open bar sits at one side, over which guests can converse with the bartender. The atmosphere lends itself well to long, lingering meals and laughter with friends. There is a small al-fresco outdoor dining area as well, though this is exposed to the elements, and rather uncomfortable being next to the road.

Service at Bridge Restaurant & Bar is professional and efficient, living up to the standards of a bistro, but falls short of restaurant quality. Staff greet diners, and seat them quickly, though I notice they don't engage people who stop to look at their menu outside. They're also quick to clear empty / dirty plates or tables, setting it for upcoming courses, or the next sitting of diners. However, I do wish they had changed the sharing plates as well, at least mid-way through the meal. Beyond this, there is very little engagement with staff, and I feel the service is functional, but not memorable.

Food at Bridge Restaurant & Bar is Modern European, artfully and beautifully plated dishes prepared with French cooking techniques, featuring largely Western influenced flavours. Head Chef Sky Chan Wai Khang believes in a "less is more" approach, each dish is thoughtfully crafted around 1 main ingredient, with accompaniments that highlight it. Fresh, quality ingredients are sourced, resulting in food that's delicious, bursting with flavour and colour. Portions are rather large for individuals, and can be shared. Despite the use of premium ingredients and restaurant fine dining concept, prices are affordable, comparable to bistro pricing. Budget about SGD $60 per person for a 4 course meal during dinner, which is incredible value for money! The menu here is regularly changed every 3 - 4 months, making repeat visits worthwhile!

The Octopus (SGD $16) dish features thinly sliced, marinated octopus, chewy kombu seaweed, crunchy frisee / endive salad and radish, with a sharp shallot chutney and colourful tobiko / flying fish row. The plate is finished with a silky Yuzu sorbet from Okinawa Prefecture, Japan! Taste is lovely, a blend of freshness, cleaness, sweet, zesty, sour, briny, and earthy. Akin to a really good carpaccio.

Loved the Blackfin Paimpol (SGD $22), with a large, tender fillet of pan-seared blackfin seabass fish, served on a bed of soft, tender coco de paimol (24 hours soaked black-eyed peas / beans stew), finished with a warm, white wine foam. Closely resembles the classic French dish of 'Sea Bass Fish With Coco De Paimpol Beans In Butter Sauce', which hails from the city of Paimpol, in the Brittany region of France. The fresh seabass fish has a crisp, slightly salty skin, which gives way to a tender, flaky, sweet white flesh underneath. The black-eyed peas / beans are soft and tender, not mushy, with a savoury sweet, buttery taste. Really good!

Wondering What The Fuss Is About Cry Dec 15, 2015

Categories : Café

Opening its doors in November 2015, 20F Specialty Coffeehouse is one of the hottest new cafes of the moment for year-end 2015. The hype has been building for this place over the last few weeks, and photos of its food, specifically its signature dish of Duck Confit And Waffle / Duck And Waffle, keep popping up all over social media. Displacing a former Chinese medicinal hall / clinic which had occupied this spot for over 60 years, 20F Specialty Coffeehouse pays tribute to its address of 20 Foch Road in its quirky name.

Ambience at 20F Specialty Coffeehouse is modern industrial chic, in the vein of similar indie coffeehouses. Think warm lighting, rustic wooden furnishings, vintage floor tiling, metal grilles, and tight layout. Modern wall art paintings lend a splash of vibrant colour to the place, while a bright, airy backyard doubles as an event space. Pretty decent place, not too suitable for chilling / relaxing. Ambient noise can be quite loud, as the place is bustling and busy. The backyard is clean and naturally lit, very photo-worthy, but the kitchen is also located here, and the poor ventilation makes your clothing stink.

Service at 20F Specialty Coffeehouse is partial self-service. Ordering and payment is done over the counter, but staff will serve orders to your table. The mostly young staff are friendly and chirpy, able to engage diners in conversation, as well as make astute recommendations, answering questions on the food or menu. Order fulfillment can take a while during peak periods, of up to 20 minutes. Consistency and quality of execution in dishes / beverages seems to be an issue, no problem with the more experience staff, but it shows in the junior staff.

Food at 20F Specialty Coffeehouse is unique for their combination of savoury and sweet in several of their dishes and desserts. Primarily modern European (American, British, French), their unique approach means you either love or hate the food. Dishes here are rustic in presentation, with a focus on poultry (duck), bacon / pork, and waffles. Portions are big and rather filling for individuals, and could possibly be shared. Prices are at the higher end for a typical cafe, budget about SGD $38 per person for a meal with 1 main course, 1 beverage, and 1 shared dessert.

The 20F Christmas Rum & Raisin Iced Coffee (SGD $7) features rum & raisin ice cream blended in to the espresso... but I only faintly detect its lovely taste over the much stronger flavour of coffee. In all other respects, this was the most irritating and poorly thought out beverage ever. The tiny straw, and glass packed with crushed peanuts, dried cranberries, mint leaves, and marshmallows meant everything kept getting stuck, making it a struggle to drink. At the very least, they could have served this with either a bigger straw, a serving spoon, or a sieve. Tastes good, but a terrible execution makes this an irritating drink, gave up without finishing.

Founded in 1903 by confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer in Paris, France, the Angelina Tea Room And Patisserie is a reowned retailer of artisanal French pastries and desserts, particularly popular with the Parisian aristocracy and celebrities. Named for the daughter-in-law of the founder, Angelina Tea Room And Patisserie opened their 1st Southeast Asia branch in Singapore, within the revamped Capitol Galleria, in May 2015.

Ambience at Angelina Tea Room And Patisserie is bespoke elegance, designed by architect Edouard-Jean Niermans. The place has a charming, refined sophistication, with colour themes of white against wood, elegant yet comfortable furniture in sturdy wood with marble tops, fine crockery, and a open concept seating area that lines the "street". While the layout of seats are closely packed, it still manages to feel like a tranquil place to chill, and while away the time chatting with friends, very much like the typical French Parisian cafes! I also like the small side tables provided to place your belongings. A drawback in ventilation, the place can get rather warm.

Service at Angelina Tea Room And Patisserie is very good. Staff are friendly and polite, quickly greeting and seating guests. If questioned about the menu, they are able to describe dishes simply and accurately. I like that they proactively offered to top up our water glass, as well as asked for feedback on the meal. They're quick to clear away empty / dirty tables, and carry themselves with a professional, unhurried air. I find service to be attentive and personal, very good! When a diner next to ours accidently knocked over her glass, which smashed on the floor, staff gently enquired if they were all right, quickly moved them to another table, and cleared up the mess.

Food at Angelina Tea Room And Patisserie is classic French, and as a patisserie, they naturally offer very good artisanal desserts! But their appetizers and main courses are just as tasty, made with fresh ingredients, and well executed. Portions are designed for individuals, but vary from dish to dish, some are large, some are small. Consistency is good, the kitchen maintains quality in each dish. Prices are high, as reflective of a restaurant, but the overall package makes it very good value for money, and I find it worthwhile to dine at Angelina Tea Room And Patisserie. Will definitely return again!

The Old-Fashioned Hot Chocolate L'Africain (SGD $13) is a decadent, luxurious dessert beverage, smooth and thick with a viscous texture, deep and rich in chocolate taste. A complex blend of 3 different African cocoa beans from Niger, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire, this sweet velvet is served with a cup of chantilly cream, which helps cut through the richness. Excellent, among the best hot chocolates I've had. Highly recommended!

Hailing from the city of Lyon, in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, the Chestnut & Madeira Veloute is a creamy, velvety smooth soup / broth, traditionally consumed in winter. Made with chicken stock, water, pureed roasted chestnuts, butter, onions, salt, and a Portuguese Madeira fortified wine, then topped with a light milk foam, edible flowers, a touch of spice for colour, and fresh herbs. Taste is savoury, sweet, earthy, and nutty, a delightful melody of flavours on the palate. Excellent, wish it could be on the regular menu. Highly recommended!

If a Paris-Brest got together with a Cream Puff and had a kid, the result would be the Paris-New York Pastry (SGD $13). This modern reinterpretation has a chewy, light choux pastry shell, filled with a crunchy pecan praline, layered with a light pecan praline cream, topped with a choux pastry cap and a pecan nut. Equal parts sweet and nutty, chewy and creamy, it's a fairly good dessert.

Decent, Affordable Thai Cuisine OK Dec 10, 2015

Full Diandin Leluk review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2015/12/diandin-leluk.html

Located in Golden Mile Complex "Little Thailand", the Diandin Leluk Thai restaurant has a long history. Founded by a husband and wife team as a mobile food truck service, before getting their current permanent location in 1985, Diandin Leluk is known for their cheap / affordable, tasty and authentic Thai food, prepared in rustic home style. Little wonder this 24-hour daily, 7 days a week Thai restaurant has been drawing crowds for years, many of whom have become regulars! However, I seem to recall their food was tastier in the past... it feels to me like standards are slipping.
Diandin Leluk Exterior

Diandin Leluk Exterior

Ambience at Diandin Leluk is simple, functional, and clean, though it's also cramped and bustling. The brightly lit place has solid wooden furniture, with marble topped tables, packed closely together. The place is noisy, with lots of movement and activity, resembling a coffee shop. At least it's air-conditioned and clean. There is some Thai decor adorning the walls, from newspaper clippings to pictures of the Thai monarch. Most eye-catching is the huge photo of rice farmers in the paddy fields. The place is suitable both for a quick eat and go meal, as well as lingering meals with long conversations.
Diandin Leluk Interior

Diandin Leluk Interior

Service at Diandin Leluk is efficient. Staff are able to converse well in both English and Thai, seat guests quickly, and clear / empty dirty tables or plates fast. I like their proactiveness in this regard. However, it does take some time to attract their attention, while staff are observant, they're also usually busy and rushing around. Still, at least when they speak to diners, the conversation is calm, polite, and unhurried, the staff gives you full attention. I must commend this, for staff from other restaurants in such situations usually are quite brusque. Only payment is self-service, everything else is tableside service. Orders are also quicky fulfilled, and staff help to arrange the table while serving.

Food at Diandin Leluk is decent in taste, generous, and affordable. The owners still oversee the preparation and hand make several items as well, so you're getting authentic, rustic Thai food. Fresh herbs are imported from Thailand throughout the week, and ingredients used are sourced fresh daily. Taste of most dishes is average to above average, though I notice the amount of spicy heat has been toned down for local palates, thus, most dishes aren't spicy, or just mildly spicy. Portions are generous, and communal dining of at least 3 people is encouraged. Prices at Diandin Leluk are cheap and affordable, budget about SGD $15 per person for a full meal!

The Papaya Salad (SGD $6 / $10 / $12) has thin strips of julienne green papaya, tomatoes, lettuce, and peanuts in a light, sour, slightly spicy Thai chili sauce. Crunchy in texture, the taste is a bright burst of flavour, the sour sauce coating the palate, quickly leading into the pleasant fruity taste of the papaya and the juicy tomatoes. Pretty good dish!

The Clear Tom Yum Soup (SGD $12 / $22 / $32) is a clear, sour sweet soup / broth, that is far too tame in the level of spicy heat. At least it has a generous portion of fresh fish, squid, leeks, tomatoes, straw mushrooms, onions, and spring onions. Hearty and very drinkable, though I wish it was more spicy!

The Tom Yum Fried Rice With Seafood (SGD $6 / $12 / $22 / $32) has a nice ration of fresh squid, straw mushrooms, onions, and rice. The rice is fragrant with a slight spicy kick, savoury sour in taste, and a hint of smoky aroma from frying. Worth ordering!
