Creative Glazed Filled Donuts  Smile Dec 31, 2015

Opened in December 2015, Fabulous Dough is part of the new dining concept offered by Montana Brew Bar / Montana Singapore. Sharing the same physical location in PoMo mall, Fabulous Dough offers creative glazed filled doughnuts, and house made milkshakes. Carving out a niche for themselves in plating and presentation, Fabulous Dough sticks a syringe into each doughnut / donut, allowing you to inject the yummy filling directly into the center!

Ambience at Fabulous Dough, while sharing the same space as Montana Brew Bar / Montana Singapore, is designed with its own unique, quirky decor. Small round tables and yellow metal chairs line the black and white zigzag tiled floor, while tongue-in-cheek nostalgia / retro American posters hang on the walls. The area is completed by an open concept baking and serving area, complete with attractive glass display of all the toppings and fillings available for the doughnuts / donuts, alongside a large menu on the wall.

Service at Fabulous Dough is also provided by the same staff of Montana Brew Bar / Montana Singapore, thus, you can expect a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, with efficient and rather proactive service. There's little in the way of product knowledge needed for this though, as everything is clearly stated on the menu, and on display, although you can still question staff if needed. You could of course, ask for recommendations on combination of toppings and fillings if you decide to create your own doughnut / donut.

Food at Fabulous Dough is all about modern American style doughnuts / donuts, and milkshakes. I like the warm, soft but chewy texture of the doughnuts / donuts, you're able to tear it apart easily, and it's semi-airy and light. You have a choice of 10 different fillings, and 16 different toppings, allowing for fun experiments in combining flavours! Portions are rather large for individuals, and sharing between 2 people is recommended. Prices are decent for this type of snack, budget about SGD $5.50 per doughnut / donut.

The Dark Chocolate Caramel Doughnut (SGD $5.50) has a sweet and fruity orange infused dark chocolate glaze, topped with crunchy granola bits, with an apple cider salted caramel filling. The filling lends a savoury, salty, fruity layer of taste, complementing the fruity chocolate flavour of the glaze. Good!

The Green Tea Yuzu Doughnut (SGD $5.50) has a earthy and floral jasmine infused green tea glaze, topped with nutty black sesame cookie bits, with a yuzu white chocolate cream filling. The filling lends a milky, zesty, citrus layer of taste, but I find it slightly overwhelmed by the much stronger grassy earthy flavour of the glaze.

The Old Chang Kee Group has diversified into restaurants with Curry Times. As the name suggests, Curry Times specialises in curry dishes, in particular, Singapore Chinese and Singapore Indian style curry. They've also rounded out the extensive menu with other local Singaporean favourites, and have become popular for their tasty dishes at wallet-friendly prices.

Ambience at Curry Times is designed to resemble the coffee shop of old. Furniture is solid, dark wood, with marble topped tables, the interiors are brightly lit and open, while the entrance features complimentary gem biscuits in large containers. Decor is distinctly Singaporean / Peranankan, with traditional kitchen equipment such as the mortar and pestle, alongside retro metal serving bowls, and local tingkats. Bird cages hang from the ceiling, doubling as lamps, while interesting tidibits of information adorn the walls. Great!

Service at Curry Times is partial self-service. Staff will greet and seat you, but ordering and payment is done over the counter. They do however, serve orders to your table. The menu is detailed with descriptions of dishes, as such, you'll have very little actual interaction with staff. I personally think their Peranakan inspired outfits look like gaudy pyjamas, very jarring to the eye. When serving large groups, staff will assist to arrange dishes on the table. I also note they're very efficient at clearing away empty / dirty plates or tables, and the whole place looks sparkling clean!

Food at Curry Times consists of local Singaporean dishes, with a focus on curry. The extensive menu has a lot of variety, from wet curry, to dry curry, to assam curry, to snack, desserts, unique beverages, and more! Taste of most dishes are generally average, to above average, the kind of passable standards you expect from most food courts or coffee shops. Tasty, but not something you'll go out of your way for. Prices are affordable, but not very value for money due to the quality, budget about SGD $18 per person for a meal here.

The Curry Chicken Loaf (SGD $8.50) is served with a soft, spongy bread with a slightly crisp crust, making it perfect for dipping into the savoury, slightly spicy curry! The chicken is tender and moist, though on its own, I notice it lacks flavour, really only being tasty when eaten together with the curry. The curry itself is the star here, filled with chunks of potatoes and bone-in chicken, it's completely delicious, and makes you want to drink it all!

The Dry Chicken Curry Rice (SGD $8.50) is served with plain white rice that is rather absorbent, soft, and slightly sticky. The deboned chicken meat is tasty, coated in a dry curry spice gravy, each tender and moist chunk bursting with flavour. I do wish there was some vegetables to accompany this, as it's pure chicken and rice, without anything else.

The Spa Esprit Group has positioned itself as a premier lifestyle brand in Singapore, with its diverse portfolio comprising 17 distinct brands. The Open Farm Community is one such brand, an initiative to reconnect the community to nature via sustainable local farming. Founded in July 2015, Open Farm Community is a 35,000 square feet urban farmland, horticultural hub, and restaurant, a celebration of local farmers, creative chefs, and delicious seasonal fare. The goal; helping Singaporeans to understand the modern eco-system and make the connection between farm and plate.

Ambience at Open Farm Community is fantastic. Situated along the outskirts of the Dempsey Hill area, along Minden Road, Open Farm Community is surrounded by lush greenery. You'll feel transported to the countryside, a calm, relaxing oasis, perfect for long, lingering meals. Ample seating options abound within the spacious area, choose from relaxing booths at the terrace, comfortable seats at the small al-fresco outdoor dining area, or modern, functional seats indoors under a light feature resembling twinkling stars. The eclectic mix of furniture, from metal to plastic, to wood, lend a rustic, homely feel. Do note that outdoor seating is prone to visits by insects, this is after all, a farm.

Service at Open Farm Community could be so much better. To be honest, we had excellent service from several of the staff, they were friendly, attentive, professional, and efficient at fulfilling requests, or clearing empty / dirty tables. They could also provide basic descriptions of ingredients in dishes, and how it's made. However, this was let down by examples of poor service from other staff, we had 1 instance of a staff totally ignoring our request and walking away. Water is not proactively topped up. They also charged us an advance reservation fee of SGD $50, only to discover when we arrived that there was no record of our booking. These mistakes mar the fine dining status of Open Farm Community, making the experience bitter sweet.

Food at Open Farm Community is Modern European Fusion, focusing on modern French and Italian cuisine, with some touches of Asian flavour. Naturally, all dishes contain some ingredients grown here on the farm, super fresh, with a distinctive difference in taste! Generally, I find food here to be fresh, tasty, containing a few key flavours that complement each other. Plates are beautifully designed works of art, it looks good, and tastes good! For a fine dining restaurant, portions at Open Farm Community are large, rather substantial for individuals, and suitable for sharing. Prices are considered affordable for a fine dining establishment, and value for money because the food is so fresh! Budget about SGD $55 per person for a proper meal here.

Seldom have I enjoyed a salad as much as I enjoyed the Warm Salad Of Broccoli, Pine Nuts, Sugar Snap Peas Topped With Crumbled Feta And Minden Mint (SGD $19)! Really fresh, with a range of textures; crunchy, juicy, chewy, rough, soft, creamy; along with flavours that work so well together, natural sweetness, savoury, salty, minty, smoky, nutty, sharp, and earthy. I swear I could just eat bowls of this! Highly recommended!

Was excited when I saw the Mangalica Pork Collar, Asian Barbecue Glaze, Corn & Speck Ragout With Pickled Cucumber (SGD $35), as mangalica pork is considered a premium meat, like wagyu. True to form, the pork was very succulent and tender, with a nice savoury sweet smoky flavour from the barbecue glaze, save for 1 part which was unusually tough. But the best part about the dish was the corn and speck ragout, almost similar to a Native American succotash, bright juicy sweet corn kernels, tender baby corn, crunchy bean sprouts, salty bacon, in a savoury, slightly spicy gravy. The crisp pork crackling on top was a nice touch! Great dish, very tasty!

The house signature dessert is the Lemon Tart With Basil Ice-Cream (SGD $17). Resembling a classic French mille-feuille in presentation, with 3 layers of crisp, flaky puff pastry, the filling within comprises light chantilly cream and a zesty lemon curd. Bright on the palate, with a sweet sour taste, the dish is finished with kiwi fruit gel, and a unique, grassy, floral basil leaf infused ice cream. A very good dessert!

Founded in January 2015, Montana Brew Bar quickly gained a reputation for their creative savoury waffles and sweet waffles, served in an small cafe designed for urban industrial chic touches. The quick success has led Montana Brew Bar to revamp their brand in December 2015, renaming themselves to Montana Singapore, and opening 2 other food concepts under this new brand.
Montana Brew Bar / Montana Singapore Exterior

Ambience at Montana Brew Bar / Montana Singapore still retains the dark, urban industrial chic decor. Harsh warm spotlights cut through the shadows, creating patterns on the textured rugs. Functional, rustic, metal and wooden furniture line the small interior, with animal print cushions helping to increase the comfort. The open kitchen and bar counter allows you to watch staff at work. However, I find ventilation to be an issue, despite the open space, I had cooking smells staining my clothing on 2 separate occasions.

Service at Montana Brew Bar / Montana Singapore is friendly and efficient. The relatively young staff are chirpy and can engage diners in conversation. I get a very comfortable, welcoming feeling. They display basic product knowledge, able to provide simple answers when queried about the menu and dishes, and politely request to check if they're not sure. You can even wander over to converse with the kitchen or barista! I commend the proactiveness in clearing away empty / dirty plates and tables, as well as topping up of water glasses, though I also notice they don't always do this.

Food at Montana Brew Bar / Montana Singapore is Western and Asian fusion, with a focus on savoury waffles, sweet waffles, and coffee. Freshly made, dishes here are tasty, with big, bold, varied flavours. Complex in taste, but it works well together, without clashing. This Modern Singaporean cuisine at Montana Brew Bar / Montana Singapore is love / hate, either you'll like it, or you won't. Portions are large, and individuals will struggle to finish, so sharing is recommended. Prices are reflective of a high-end cafe, budget about SGD $27 per person for a decent meal here.

The Yuzu Coconut Cold Brew (SGD $6.50) is a unique beverage! The chilled coffee has been infused with yuzu, lending a sweet citrus flavour to the robust and deep flavour of the coffee. Realise it may not appeal to everyone though. I personally liked it!

The Jalapeno Mac & Cheese Waffle, Version 4 (SGD $12) is creative because the sour jalapenos, macaroni pasta, and gooey cheese is baked directly into the waffle, which has a crisp exterior! The interior is also scented with truffle oil, which creates an earthy taste contrast with the savoury, cheesy taste of the waffle, yet does not overwhelm the palate. Served with a tangy, sour spicy, jalapeno salsa on the side, I thought this was quite good. Worth ordering again, which I did on my 2nd visit!

Chef draws on his heritage from Kedah, Malaysia, to create this Assam Crab Waffle (SGD $18). My personal favourite of their new dishes, this is designed to resemble the Malaysian Kedah Laksa, with a fluffy waffle laced with shredded galangal, lemongrass, and herbs, topped with deshelled crab meat that has a lovely sweet freshness, a diced pineapple, cucumber, and radish salsa, and a savoury sour assam / tamarind laksa gravy. Highly recommended!

Choose to have the Chocolate Banana Waffle (SGD $12) either fluffy or crisp, I got this crisp. Excellent, the waffle is fragrant, light, and crisp, with good chocolate flavour. With sweet, caramelised slices of banana, and a generous scoop of fragrant vanilla bean ice cream, this was completely delicious. Highly recommended!

Opened along with the revamped Simpang Bedok Market Place in December 2014, Huong Que Vietnamese Cuisine offers traditional, rustic Vietnamese food, made with family recipes passed down to the owners, Singaporean Mr. Leo Ng and his Vietnamese wife Ms. Vu Thi Hai. While the menu is small, the quality of dishes at Huong Que Vietnamese Cuisine is consistently good, with several items made from scratch, and prepared only upon order.

Ambience at Huong Que Vietnamese Cuisine is similar to the rest of the stalls here, on account of the shared casual seating, and clean, bright atmosphere. The stall owners have put effort into some decor, with the traditional, iconic, Vietnamese palm leaf conical hat doubling as lamps / lanterns. The range of sauce bottles on display, along with a rustic design for the stall, also lends a 'local street side stall' feel.
Huong Que Vietnamese Cuisine Facade

Huong Que Vietnamese Cuisine Facade

Service at Huong Que Vietnamese Cuisine is completely self-service, with ordering, payment, and collection of orders done over the counter. At least the owners are friendly and cheerful, and they provide you a buzzer, which alerts you when your order is ready. Order fulfillment can take up to 15 minutes though, this is because they prepare several items only upon order, fresh from stratch. Personally, I don't mind a short wait for better quality dishes!

Food at Huong Que Vietnamese Cuisine is naturally, Vietnamese cuisine. Made to order, according to authentic, traditional family recipes of the owners, the food is simple and rustic, but tasty, nutritious, and filling. Love how fresh the dishes are, especially topped with a generous portion of vegetables! Portion sizes are designed for individuals, and prices are cheap / very affordable, similar to a prices at a food court / hawker stall. Budget around SGD $6 per person for a meal here.

The Pho Bo (SGD $5.50), or Vietnamese Beef Noodles, has a thin yet intensely flavoured beefy soup / broth. The thin, flat rice vermicelli noodles are silky smooth in texture, and the thinly sliced beef flank, is savoury and tender. I particularly like the hand made beef balls, which have a strong beef meat flavour. However, I did feel that it's lacking in vegetables as compared to other versions, as they noticeably do not have bean sprouts. Also, they lack the variety of cuts of beef. Seems like it takes after the North Vietnam style. Still, it's an above average dish worth ordering.

The Goi Cuon Fresh Spring Roll (SGD $2.80) is a best seller here. Little wonder, for these fresh, tightly packed, rice noodle rolls stuffed with fresh lettuce, thin rice vermicelli noodles, chicken, and prawn, are crunchy, chewy, and tasty! Great as a light snack, or for sharing. The sweet, thick dipping sauce makes it even more yummy! Highly recommended!
