Best Hokkaido Cream Puff Smile May 24, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Fusion | Café | Desserts and Cakes

Dulcet & Studio undoubtedly serves the best hokkaido cream puffs in Singapore.

I first came across it when I witnessed a friend purchasing a whole box of these puffs for another friend as a farewell gift. I was perplexed, questioning why on earth would somebody give cream puffs as a farewell gift? Is it that good? Does it make the cut as one of the best things to be remembered for?

To my delight, my friend offered to share the cakes with everybody. On my first bite, I knew why. Since then, I've been going back to Dulcet & Studio (previously Tampopo Deli) again and again.

Dulcet & Studio's Signature Cream Puff

Lightly drizzled with icing.

Abundance of filling.

The custard was so smooth and silky! It tasted like vanilla custard yet it has this amazing milkiness to it. It's not heavy at all, surprisingly it's very light. The pasty is very soft, yet there's a mysterious crisp to it. When you bite into it, it collapses in your mouth. And you can never stop at only one piece.

If you want to buy these puffs, do go there early. Sometimes it runs out as early as afternoon, and I had to walk away disappointed like a wilted flower.

Bento Smile May 24, 2013   (Related Review)

Categories : Japanese

It was 9+pm and I hadn't had dinner. Most of the food joints in the area had closed, but I was terribly hungry.

Tampopo Deli came to my mind! At 9+pm, most of their leftover Bentos were going at half price.

Originally priced at over $10, I got it for about $5+, which was really affordable for Tampopo's good food.

There were so many ingredients in the Bento, which were still surprisingly fresh even though it was already late at night! I had a sunny side up (with its yolk still runny), broccoli, potato, carrots, cabbage, onions, tomato, and a huge slice of meat patty topped on alot of rice, and drizzled with sauce!

I love how the chefs managed to make the Bento look so appealing and delicious, and even healthily well-balanced! Really grateful for the awesome meal even though it was already late at night!

Definitely going back for more Bentos!

Beef Kway Teow Smile May 24, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Hawker Centre

One of my friends recommended me to try the beef kway teow from this stall. It was at late afternoon and she told me if I didn't believe this stall is famous for their good food, I can observe for myself the queue starting to form once it reaches dinner time.

Beef Kway Teow

The broth was very light yet fantastically flavourful! The kway teow was also soft, I could just slurp it off my spoon. Beef slices were aplenty, tasted really awesome, and were not too overcooked. It was really tender in fact. I like everything about this dish - the soup, the beef, and the kway teow.

Sure enough, it was dinner time when we finished our meals, and I witnessed a long queue starting to form at this stall. I was told the usual average waiting time is about 30 minutes. Glad I got to beat the queue for this awesome dish!

Coco Exotic cake Smile May 24, 2013
Categories : Bakery

I celebrated Mother's Day 2 weeks ago. Thanks to this awesome Coco Exotic cake from Four Leaves, our celebration ended with a success.

Coco Exotic

I wondered why I didn't notice this cake earlier! When a relative turned up with this cake, I was all buzzing around it like a bee. I could no longer hide the chocoholic in me.

The layers between the cake look even more delectable. Sure enough, when we cut the cake and distributed it, everybody commented about how good it was and that they liked it, chocolate-lovers and chocolate-haters alike. I guess "balance" was the key in this. It was chocolately enough, yet not overly sweet or thick. To prevent it from being overly-generous with the chocolate element, they used some light chocolate mousse and crunchy hazelnut flakes. There were lots of these crunchy-textured pralines that gave the cake some bite (in terms of texture) and added that surprise element to it.

Love it!

Good and affordable chicken rice Smile May 24, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Coffeeshop | Chicken Rice

Chicken Rice is a common dish served everywhere from coffeeshops to restaurants in Singapore.

If you are looking for good and affordable chicken rice, I recommend this shop. I've patronized them for years, and they have maintained their standards for over a decade.

Whole white chicken, shared amongst four pax.

It was 8+pm when I arrived. Honesty I usually prefer roast chicken than white chicken, but all the roast meats were sold out. I suppose I was the last customer of the day because I bought the last whole chicken they have left. That's how it is at this store - their food is usually sold out if you patronize them a little later. But to be fair, their white meats are also very commendable. You can see from the photo that the meats are really tender and delicious, drizzled in lots of sauce. Even their breast meats are tender - I have no idea how they achieve that, but most other chicken rice stalls serve their breast meats dry and powdery, which is a turn-off for me.

You'll also notice that there are only a few "spare parts" given, because those were the last few pieces left of the day, not even enough to make one portion.

They have also done a very good job with the rice, because all the fragrance of the chicken has been delicately infused into it. To be honest, even if their chicken is sold out, I can just eat the rice alone without any dishes because it is already delicious on its own. The serving is also really generous.

We've patronized the stall for over a decade so we are pretty much regulars here. The humble uncle usually serves our food with an extra bowl of chilli sauce, because he now knows how much we love his chilli! It's spicy and fragrant at the same time. If you smell it, you will salivate even before eating. It is very addictive, and I love to drench my rice with lots of chilli for double the satisfaction.
