As far as I understand, Pietrasanta is a town on the coast of northern Tuscany, with its capital being none other than Florence itself. And yes, the owners of Ristorante Pietrasanta hail from beautiful Pietrasanta! I believe this Tuscany family-styled restaurant embraces the most homely and authentic Tuscan experience one can ever have in Singapore, away from all the hustle and bustle of the Singaporean lifestyle. I was extremely thrilled to be invited to this food-tasting event by OpenRice; to be able to step into this little piece of my Italian heaven.

Ristorante Pietrasanta is really gorgeous by day, but even more romantic by night. Other than outdoor and indoor seating, there is also courtyard seating. I love the charming decoration at the courtyard because it gives me a tinge of excitement in the lovely environment; feels like it's Christmas all year round! There is also a couple swing which really sets the romantic mood.

The food tasting started with Chef Alfredo giving us a visual treat on how he prepares Home-made Mozzarella Cheese - stretching and kneading to achieve a delicate consistency, then pulling out to develop the stretchy strings before shaping it for the plate! I love how pure Mozzarella tastes so subtle; yet its gentle cheese fragrance is so alluring. I enjoyed the slightly chewy texture. Burrata presents a pleasant surprise for its sharper taste, with its texture being rich and creamy - notably distinct from its Mozzarella origins.

Home-made Fettuccine with Sausage and Truffle
Black truffles are held in high esteem in the Italian cuisine, and are highly prized. The little slice of black truffle on the plate totally brought out the character of this dish. Its precious savory sweetness, coupled with lots of tempting sausages, tossed together with the delicate home-made pasta made this dish so divine.

Home-made Green Ravioli filled with Ricotta Cheese and Spinach, served with Butter and Sage Sauce
Other than the uniqueness of this round-shaped Ravioli, what struck me was the texture of this home-made pasta - so fine and soft, unlike the normal kinds of store-bought pastas! It was not only able to soak up the full flavour of the tasty Butter and Sage Sauce, it also acted as a warm and gentle embrace to the savory taste of its Ricotta Cheese and Spinach filling. Yummy!

Risotto with Porcini, Saffron and Marrow Bones
Another highly prized dish. Porcini is an expensive type of mushroom that is also held in high regard in many cuisines and is difficult to cultivate although it is available commercially, while Saffron is the most exorbitant spice in the world, believed to have medicinal benefits. The taste of this dish is rather complex, taking the character of Saffron which is one flavour I still face difficulty describing. All I knew was, the golden-yellow creamy-textured Risotto was so enticing that I couldn't stop eating it, and if it was prepared without Saffron, this dish would probably be dull and soulless. The Marrow Bones (Beef) made this dish all the more welcoming, adding that explicit beefy butter fragrance.

Grilled Lemon Sole
The sprinkle of herbs enhanced the lemon zest in this dish, resulting in a light and refreshing surprise. The nature of the meat is slightly textured, yet remarkably soft to the bite; something close to the consistency of Grilled Salmon.

Braised Lamb Shank with Chianti Wine
As far as I understand, Chianti is a region near Florence in Tuscany, and is one of the best wine-growing regions in the world. Tuscany is arguably most famous for their elegant Chianti Wines. This charming ingredient made the whole dish so luxurious! Needless to say, the fragrance of the sauce was intensive and heavenly. I have no idea how long the meat was braised, but I'm sure lots of time and effort were put into achieving its fall-off-the-bones tenderness, juiciness, and explosive taste. With the divine sauce drenched over the delicate meat and moist mashed potato, this dish was extremely addictive!

Lemon Tart
Arguably one of the best dessert I've ever eaten in my life! It is incredibly weightless; melt-in-your-mouth with a little tinge of fizz. The lemon fragrance was so explosive it shot a renewed sense of euphoria into me. There is just some supernatural power in this that made me so in love, when in actual fact I don't usually think much of lemon (fruit) and tarts in general. Maybe double negatives can magically turn into a magnificent positive after all. This dessert is to-die-for!

Pistachio Semifreddo
Semifreddos are semi-frozen desserts, typically gelatos. Its fluffy consistency was stunning, like compacted shavings of iced milky pistachio. The moment it went into my mouth, the semifreddo melted slowly, then so gracefully flowed down my throat, leaving its alluring presence in its entire trail as it made its way into my belly - there was something so comforting about this indulgence. The milky pistachio flavour is pure and clear-cut, better than the actual pistachio nut in my opinion.

Tiramisu
Another outstanding dessert that is surprisingly lightweight. The foamy and softest melt-in-your-mouth consistency was seductive. I love that this version didn't have any ingredient overpowering another. The resultant flavour was the most blissful blend of coffee, cocoa and mascarpone cheese.

If you're now tempted to visit Ristorante Pietrasanta, SBS Bus 191 actually stops right in front of the restaurant at Wessex Village Square, but do be cautioned that the last bus is at 8pm.

I'm really thankful for this one of the most amazing food journey I've ever had in my life! :')

melt-in-your-mouth Macarons! Smile Apr 28, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Desserts and Cakes

When in need of desserts or even presents, the simplest solution is to turn to Obolo. Personally I would rate their standards to be pretty high-end. It's not just about the food, but also about the entire packaging and experience.

To be frank, I received the below set of Macarons as a gift:

And since this was a gift, I hvnt any idea how much it costs. I'd guess it's most likely a luxurious price tag for a box of mararons, but I'm also guessing most people would think this very price tag won't make the cut for an exquisite gift. The fact was, when I received it, I felt like it was the best gift.

The packaging is just luxurious, with pink words and some designs embossed on a black background. The macarons put together resemble a happy rainbow. The melt-in-your-mouth texture and heavenly taste made me feel very privileged. I almost couldn't stop myself from finishing the whole box the moment I opened it - the only way I did it was to tell myself to drag this privilege over a longer period of time so that I could count more blessings with it.

Durian Puff Smile Apr 19, 2013   (Related Review)

Categories : Bakery | Hotel | Desserts and Cakes

After trying Deli's Durian Macadamia Nut Crumble Tartlet, I was impressed! So I had a glutton motivation to return for more. This time, I tried their famous not-to-be-missed Durian Puffs.

The standard of the durian pastries here really do not disappoint! The amount of durian filling is generous, and there are lots of real durian flesh in it. Feels like eating an actual creamy durian except that the texture is lighter and fluffier. Best of all, served chilled. Needless to say, the durian is really fragrant!

Best Japanese Ramen Smile May 22, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

Ramen Santouka is one of the best Japanese ramen restaurant in Singapore. It's my favourite destination for ramen. It's not only favourite-ed by many people, in fact I've known of chefs (not in the Japanese cuisine line) giving it the thumbs-up.

The first time I tried it, I was blown away. So impressed, that I promised myself to go back to try every single ramen flavour on their entire menu.

Tokusen Toroniku Ramen (Shio)

This is such a luxury! The taste of the broth is so deep and intense. There was just so much taste going on in the soup, like an intricate piece of art with many beautiful layers in between, formed into a bigger piece of masterpiece. In the region of Hokkaido in Japan, the people often eat their food slightly heavier and oilier, because of the year-round winter climax, so expect this ramen to be on the heavier side.

The roasted pork cheeks served on the side are extremely valuable, because only very little cheek meat can be taken from each pig. It is rare and considered a delicacy. The meat is just like fatty tuna, melt-in-your-mouth texture, and is so rich, tasty and tender that it is really heavenly.

I also ordered an extra gyoza to go with my meal. The meat is well-marinated and flavourful, with the skin fried till crispy and fragrant.

Caramel pudding

I understand from the staff that most people visit the store for ramen and therefore overlook the desserts. I tried this caramel pudding and it was awesome. The caramel pudding was so soft and melty, topped with burnt caramel sauce. The resulting flavour is an array of sweet and innocent yet slightly burnt fragrance of caramel. Too good!

Awesome Asian Buffet Smile May 21, 2013
Categories : Asian Variety | Hotel | Halal | Buffet

I have to say I was rather impressed with this place.

It is now certified halal, so it's a good destination for gatherings. The variety of food served here is really luxurious although it's mostly restricted to asian. If you love fresh seafood, this is heaven for you.

Lots of fresh crustaceans - prawns, crayfish, mussels, oysters.

I love the prawns because they are so fresh, juicy, chewy and sweet. There are lots of lemon slices and sauces on the sides so you can help yourselves. The mango salad was also awesome, with sweetness, sourness, spiciness all intertwined together. There is just too much going on here!

Oysters

Everytime the oysters get topped up, a group of enthusiastic dinners will swamp over the counter. The speed at which these oysters disappear, usually within 2 minutes, is amazing. My friend who was lucky managed to snag 3 for us to share. It's really fresh and cold! I like mine with a twist of lemon.

Roast meat section

The food selection here is so vast that the roast meats section seems to have been overlooked. Nonetheless I took 1 small piece of each meat to try. It tasted good; well roasted! But sadly I didn't have much space in my stomach for more.

Sashimi

One of my favourite sections! The sashimi here is fresh and chunky - good quality! I can't emphasize how luxurious it is to be able to enjoy an endless supply of awesome fresh sashimi in this meal.

Kebab

Over here you can DIY your own kebab. I didn't do it because I thought that would be quite filling for me, so I only tasted some of the meat. Juicy and fragrant!

Cooked food section

In particular, the cooked seafood section. I went crazy over here because I simply couldn't resist the giant-sized chilli crabs and the humongous juicy slabs of sambal sting ray. Both were really impressive with lots of meat. They don't stinge on any quality or quantity. (See the crab pincers sticking out?) In fact, chilli crab is one of the star dishes in this entire restaurant, so it's really not-to-be-missed! If you like mantou, you can help yourselves to more chilli crab sauce and drown your crispy mantou in them.

Desserts

This is only 1 portion of the choices of dessert. I didn't help myself to any pastries because I was too full, but there is an ice-kachang machine that diners can help themselves to, for their own DIY ice-kachang. Another famous to-die-for dessert here is the durian pudding. The texture is like real durian flesh being blended with lots of other secret ingredients for that very intense bite. Served chilled, the taste is simply heavenly. I witnessed so many diners going back for 2nd/3rd/4th helpings, and each time they would fill up their bowls over the brim (like a full mountain) before going back to their seats. Although I was extremely full, I just had to squeeze in 2 bowls.

Some of the food on my plate. The satay was tender and succulent too!

The above only showed the food selection in half the restaurant. There were still many choices, like laksa station, etc, but I was too full for those. Next time..! I'll sure be back soon..!
