Comfort food @ My Humble House Smile May 28, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant

If you're in the mood for some delicious comfort food after catching a performance at the Esplanade, then My Humble House is the place for you. Under the Tung Lok group, My Humble House offers a variety of food, mainly typical asian fare such as Laksa and Zha Jiang Mian and some western dishes such as salad.

Although I usually order the Laksa, I decided to opt for the Claypot Beef Rice ($14) as I was feeling abit more peckish and also had some of the Rock and Roll salad ($14) to share.

While the Rock and Roll salad was delicious, especially the tangy Asian-style dressing which was light yet flavourful, the Beef rice failed to impress as it came in a much too small for its price portion and was nothing spectacular.

Menu:

Ambiance: Cosy yet artistic feel of the place, in line with the concept of Esplanade as a place for the arts

Rock and roll salad ($14)

The salad came with generous portions of chicken, caramelized walnuts, raisins and garden vegetables and drizzled with a tangy and light dressing that made it even more enjoyable. Highly recommend trying this although the price is pretty steep.

Claypot Beef Rice ($14)

The rice set came with white rice topped with some coriander and fried shallots whilst the beef was braised in sauce. Although the toppings on the rice was a nice touch, the claypot beef came in a very small serving and did not impress in terms of flavor. Would not order this again.

If you're a green tea lover, then Maccha House is the place for you! It has a wide variety of food options that revolve around the star ingredient: Japanese Maccha. From lattes to parfaits to shaved ice desserts, they have incorporated green tea into almost every dish and so I decided to try their signature Mixed Dorayaki.

It was basically 2 pieces of Japanese pancake sandwiching a scoop of green tea and vanilla ice cream, green tea and normal whipped cream, mochi rice balls and red beans with green tea syrup. While the ice cream complemented the rather tasteless pancakes, the whipped cream did little to enhance the taste of the dish as they were quite bland and so I removed it from the dish. The rice balls were alright and the green tea syrup and sweet red beans helped to add more flavour to an otherwise plain dish.

While it was an okay dessert, I would not come back again for it as the price of $9.90 can be well-spent on more satisfying desserts elsewhere.

Healthy Japanese rice snacks OK May 13, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese

If you're looking for a light and healthy snack to sate any hunger pangs from shopping, then Yonehachi in Takashimaya food hall is the place to go! It boasts a wide variety of traditional Okowa rice, which is steamed mochi rice with various fillings ranging from salmon to red bean. I decided to get the sampler bento set which came with 5 "sushi-sized" pieces of Okowa rice in the various flavours that they had to offer - salmon, prawn, chestnuts, red bean and shellfish.

At $8.80 for a box, each piece comes up to be about $1.80 so it's about the price of a piece of sushi.

It is definitely best eaten fresh and warm from the stall and my favourite flavour would have to be the salmon one as it was tangy and chewy. The rest were decent and tasted exactly like what their key ingredient is and although I would probably not repurchase the rest of the flavours, if I am ever ready for a light meal in town, this is one of the places I would definitely go.

Best fast food in Singapore Smile May 13, 2013

Categories : American | Fast Food | Burgers and Sandwiches

If you're feeling peckish in town and craving for some good ol' fast food, I will definitely have to recommend Carl's Junior as my favourite fast food joint (since In-N-Out hasn't arrived on our shores yet...).

While I usually order the Famous Star burger set meal for to sate the cheeseburger craving, I decided to try out the Chicken tenders and went with the Chicken ranch burger today.

Chicken ranch burger! While the fried chicken is not on par with the famous star cheese burger, I definitely recommend it to chicken lovers who can't take spicy food such as the popular McSpicy burger from Mcdonalds or Zinger burger from KFC. The chicken was a tad bit dry but the ranch dressing was a delicious accompaniment to the meat. The best part of the meal?

Carl's Junior fries. I definitely prefer this over Mcdonalds fries. Not only are they thicker, they also seem to be much more flavourful than those from McDs. Quick tip: Request for no salt fries and you can be sure to get a fresh crispy batch of them fried specially for you! Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, best fries in Singapore!

While their prices are on the higher side for fast food meals, their portions are usually big enough to share and I usually get one set and "go large" (up-size) to share with a pal! This meal came up to $9.90.

Their salsa bar is also a huge plus for me and I usually go with the normal salsa which gives a refreshing taste to otherwise heaty food. Don't forget to opt for their homemade ice tea instead of the usual sugary soft drinks offered in fast food joints, it's not only healthier but much more delicious as you can control how much sugar you want to add in it.

As you can probably tell, Carl's Junior has maintained its position as my favourite fast food chain in Singapore!

Artisan Ice Cream? Cry May 13, 2013
Categories : Bakery | Café

I decided to try some ice cream from Seventh Heaven Cafe in Orchard Central since I was in the area and it had a vast selection of ice cream with very interesting flavors not offered by other ice cream shops around town, such as Potato chip, Red velvet and Cotton candy.

However, after some sampling of the above flavors, I decided to go with Double dark chocolate and peanut butter ice cream since it was the only palatable option out of all 4 that I tried. The potato chip ice cream tasted nothing like potato chips ( I was expecting something salty like salted caramel), while the red velvet had a very artificial taste and the bits of red velvet cake in the ice cream did nothing to improve to taste.

At $4.20 for a single scoop of ice cream, it is around the market rate for ice cream shops in Town so that was still rather reasonable and the scoop was a generous one with a piece of waffle biscuit to top it off.

That said, the ice cream was nothing fantastic as the peanut butter taste overwhelmed the chocolate and it simply tasted like peanut butter ice cream. Hence, I would say that despite their adventurous flavors, in reality they fail to live up to expectations taste-wise. Until then, I will not be repurchasing any more ice cream from them.
