dinner at the wine company Smile Oct 06, 2013

Categories : European | Japanese | Singaporean Chinese

Had a simple dinner at The wine company. It was a two course dinner, with a cream of mushroom soup and a grilled chicken sphagetti.

The cream of mushroom soup was filled with bits of mushroom and tasted fantastic. Normally, in other restaurants, the mushroom soup would taste too creamy with too little mushroom. However, over here, it was done just nice and to my liking.

As for the grilled chicken sphagetti, the grilled chicken was abit charred but nevertheless still tasted good. The sphagetti was just normal fare.

This place has a rather dim light and tranquil atmosphere which makes it quite romantic. However, it could be due to the lack of human traffic on a monday night. As for weekends, I am not too sure about its crowd size.

Set menu dinner for 6-7 pax Smile Oct 06, 2013

Categories : Dim Sum | Seafood | Zi Char | Kids-Friendly

A reservation was made prior to entry, hence there was no waiting time on this crowded sunday. My family went for the 308sgd set menu for 6-7 pax.

The first dish was shark fin soup with crabmeat. The soup itself is nice and would be equally nice without the shark fin. Honestly, all shark fins are practically tasteless, so ordering shark fin soup is literally a waste of money and contributing to the cruel death of many sharks. (no photo posted for this)

The second dish was roasted duck with mango. This dish was average at best. I remembered tasting it 10 years ago and it was way better than it was now. It simply tasted like roasted duck with some mango sauce decorated with sliced fruits. sad

Deep fried marbled goby fish was next. It was fried well and tasted great when drizzled with the accompanying sauce surrounding it. smile

The next dish was a funny combination of roasted pork, tofu and sea cucumber in a claypot. Personally, the roasted pork was too strong and render the entire dish a porky aroma. It would be nice for people who love pork but I did not appreciate having sea cucumber and tofu together with roasted pork. sad

The ginseng and chicken essence herbal prawns were great. The prawns were fresh and huge. The soup tasted like some potent herbal cocktail. smile

I am not a fan of spinach as it is pretty tasteless, but somehow the spinach with abalone was cooked very well. The spinach had a slight wok hei taste, which could be due to high heat stir frying prior to mixing with the thinly sliced abalone. The abalone tasted normal, with nothing to wow about.

We ordered an additional medium sized ee fu mee and it was one of the best ee fu mee I had ever eaten. The ee fu mee here was slightly wet, different from what other places usually serve. That accompanying gravy was the factor behind its brilliant taste.

As for dessert, it was yam paste with gingko nut and pumpkin puree. Rather than having thick coconut milk, this dessert used pumpkin puree, which I would say is sweeter and less creamy. It allowed us to enjoy this dessert at the end of a heavy meal without feeling too bloated. If given a choice, I would take this rather than yam paste with coconut milk, anytime. smile

A 6" all chocolate cake which cost $32. It came with 100 g of dark chocolate truffles worth $13.50 (you have to like their facebook or instagram page to enjoy this offer). When ordering the cake, you can request the person to customize some wordings on it too.

Taste wise, the cake was really normal. the chocolate layer stood out, but was too thin. The sponge chocolate cake layers were just too normal. Overall, it was disappointing and did not live up to its price tag of $32.

As for the free dark chocolate truffles, they were fantastic! It had the right amount of cream with chocolatey taste and tiny bits of cocoa. It was not too soft, hence, rendering it a pleasure to softly chew and savor this delicious piece of dessert.

Overall, the truffles saved the day and made it a memorable birthday experience.

cookie crumble cheesecake Smile Oct 06, 2013

I ordered a cookie crumble cheesecake for takeaway together with a cup of hot mocha (not shown). The cookie crumble cheesecake cost $6.50. On the first look, it did not appeal much. However, after taking a small bite, I had to say it tasted really nice. The cheesecake was rich and hard, which was the type of cheesecake i preferred. Though small in size, it was very filling (probably due to the higher amount of cheese content present).

I did notice something, despite it being cookie crumble cheesecake, only the base was made of cookiie crumble, with some crumble being sprinkled at the top. Other than that, it was actually just a normal cheesecake.

To end off, though it tasted fantastic, I would probably not pay $6.50 for it again.

Chicken Biryani  Smile Oct 06, 2013

Categories : Indian | Hawker Centre | Halal

I had the chicken biryani here for dinner today. It cost $4.5 and the plate was loaded with lots of rice. The rice was flavorful and tasted of spices. It did not taste spicy and the accompanying bean & potato curry was pretty good. However, the chicken tasted rather bland, if not it would be a really satisfying meal. The chicken was probably cooked together with the rice without any additional culinary preparation, which explains its rather bland taste.

Overall, it was still pretty enjoyable and filling.
