Yumen Hut @ Downtown East Cry Jul 12, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Halal

I got to know about this shop from a Channel U variety show. The owner of Yumen Hut owned a noodle factory and if I am not wrong, he also invented the 2-ply noodles. The noodles are very colourful (green, yellow, orange etc) as they are made of different coloured vegetable extract such as carrot, spinach, pumpkin. His noodles are all made of 100% vegetable extract with no artificial colour and preservative. Thus, if you are on a healthy diet, you can come here more often. Price is very affordable, range from $3.80 to $4.50 per dish. To our Muslim friends, this stall is also halal certified.

I ordered the pumpkin noodles in pasta sauce. Frankly speaking, I would prefer my spaghetti in pasta sauce as it is more "q". Anyway, here is my plate of pumpkin noodle with very simple ingredients that you can prepare it yourself at home.

You can cook your own healthy noodles by buying the dry noodles "Oodles" which come in 3 delicious flavours: sesame and pandan, soya and pumpkin , spinach and paprika and bring them home to cook in your own style!

Yummy Chopsticks Cry Jul 12, 2013
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Kids-Friendly

Hubby and I went to Natas Fair at the Singapore Expo, hoping to get some good travel deals. We had our lunch first at "Yummy Chopsticks" at Expo before going to the exhibition halls.
The fried rice photo in the menu looked so appetizing and it tempted me to order their fried rice. I saw this fried rice on almost every other tables too. However, it tasted like those fried rice designed for kids, with lots of mixed vegetables which I didn't really like.

For Mango and Shrimp pancakes, the flattened shrimps could be found in between the mango and the skin of the pancake. Not really good. Shrimps were quite mashed up.

For Crispy Tofu, I liked these big fried wanton with tofu inside but the bottom part of the skin was very oily.

Their Xiao Long Bao definitely cannot be compared with those restaurant type of standard. The skin was thick and inside was not juicy.

Once again, like previous years, we had our mothers' day lunch with my family (maternal) at Jin Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok North again. However, again due to Mothers' Day crowd, we waited near 45 minutes before our first dish was being served.

Presentation of the first dish was good and I was looking forward to other dishes with much anticipation. Ok, the first dish passed., the crepe was tasty. smile

However, we were rather disappointed with the food from this dish onwards.
The cornflakes on the Coffee Pork Ribs, to us, didn't serve any purpose.

We were all shocked when the last dish served was actually braised pork with rice when most of us were already quite full. The way the dish was served looked very unappetizing as well. Thus, I think again, this dish should be tweaked eg. served without the rice and improve on the presentation, if it were to be part of the set menu.

The desserts was fruit jelly served to each of us in individual small plastic containers. I didn't bother to take photo of this one.

Overall, compared to last year, we had quite a number of complains with regards to the dishes served in the Mothers' Day Set Menu this year. We feedback to the manager, and not sure whether because of this, she gave my grandmother 2 bottles of bird nest. The cost was around $388 per table, which was steeper than last year. Hope they will continue to make improvement to their menu.

My friend ordered Matcha Ice Cream Anmitsu ($7.90) which was served with azuki, jelly and tangerine. The set came along with brown tea too. She commented that this was quite nice and fortunately, she didn't really put in all the green tea sweet syrup into her dessert. It came really useful to me when I had my share of dessert later on.

My other friend ordered a Mixed Dorayaki ($9.90). We were all shocked when this was served. Not only it was huge, it didn't look like the photo of the dorayaki presented in the menu. There was lots of whipped cream which my friend didn't like and the whole presentation looked rather messy.

I thought of having something simple so I ordered Matcha Soy Milk Pudding ($5.90). The texture was very firm and not the common bouncy type of pudding. However, the dessert was also very very bitter! After I poured the whole mini-cup of sweet syrup into my pudding, I also took Sam's syrup and poured everthing into it!

Bliss House Theme Restaurant is a new restaurant at The Central, Clarke Quay. I chanced upon Zoe Raymond's blog about this place and thought it was quite an interesting place just like the Fullhouse theme restaurant at Hotel Rendezvous. My group of gal friends loved the concept of Fullhouse when they were there and thus, I asked them whether they would like to celebrate our March birthday celebration here. The birthday gal agreed and thus, we proceed with the reservation. (Actually, no reservation is required.)

The dining area was quite nice, with pure white furnishing. The place looked clean and bright. Initially, we thought we would have a great time here but......

First, we were really surprised that their menu looked quite shabby. They were not even laminated and some were quite torn and with stains. There was no photo of the food in the menu and the fonts were quite difficult to read.

Secondly, service was unacceptably slow. Other than our group of 10 adults and a few kids, there were only about 3 other pairs of customers in the whole restaurant. However, it took them almost 20 minutes just to serve us our ice water!

My friend who doesn't drink alcohol, requested for her margarita to be served without alcohol. She took a few sips immediately when her drink was being served to her. However, after quite a while, the waitress came back with another cup of margarita and told my friend that the one she was having, actually contained alcohol!

The appetizers and side dishes were served after quite a long wait.
Baked Mushrooms ($10).

I ordered wild mushroom soup ($8). The bread was very hard and I had to ask my friend to help me break it into smaller pieces.

Calamari ($14) which was meant for only 2 persons to share.

This portobello mushroom cost $16, not really worth the $.

Scallop with prawn & caviar ($24). To be fair, this dish was good, with big fresh prawns placed with the juicy scallops.

After almost 45 minutes, our mains were still not being served yet. We ordered our food at around 1pm and near 2pm, the kids were very hungry and so were the adults. When we told the staff to serve the kids their carbonara first, she told us that it might disrupt the flow in the preparation of the dishes and the adults might have to wait even longer for our mains to arrive!! With so few customers, they already couldn't cope. I wonder whether they plan for the restaurant to be 100% full?

All of us were starving. Since we had bought a birthday cake from Swissbake, we decided to sing the birthday song to the 2 birthday gals first so that we could eat the cake first! sad sad sad

I ordered the Seafood Spaghetti with tomato sauce ($26).

The meal cost a whooping $628.50, which averaged to $57 per pax! We all felt that most of the dishes were overpriced and with the slow and inattentive service, this meal definitely not worth this price.
