Everytime I crave for nice dimsum without spending a lot, I'll go for Tak Po restaurant. So far I stick with this restaurant after trying a few restaurants because basically the siewmai, har gao, feng jiao, pai ku and other standard dimsum selections are very fresh, nice with affordable price. The place is located in the Smith Street, easy to locate and also always crowded. Thus sometimes you need to wait for around 5 to 10 min for available seat. Also the waitresses are all very busy and so do not expect the "hotel" service standard. The service is basically quite bad, the waitresses and managers are quite rude, but well, I go there to enjoy the food... so don't really make any differences for me :>

For 2 pax is always around $38 if you eat until you very very full (promise yourself you won't eat dimsum again for one month, but after few weeks, you'll crave again for dimsum >__<)....that 's always happen for me >_<...

So for dimsum lover, u really should try here because it is very nice. However strange thing is got 1 time I went there, the food was not nice at all, but after that I gave it a try again and turned out to be nice again. So I'm happy customer now

Red Star restaurant it s my first favourite dimsum restaurant It is located in HDB Level 7. So when i came the first time, i was very shock because from Chinatown MRT, you need walk from OG and turns right, walk straight towards old HDB,building and kopitiam.After 15 mints i reached the building and i have quite low expectation because of the surrounding and especially the old lift. Surprisingly, when the lift was open, it was the oriental-like chinese restaurant. The manager is fast and friendly, quickly arrange us to our seat.

The restaurant still maintains the old style of presenting the dimsum by pushing the cart. The siomay, har gao, fried prawn, feng jiao, prawn drumstick, etc are very fresh and juicy!! So it s really worth to try However the price will be a bit pricey, for 2 people, we eat until very very full are around $50. We do not order meats, only merely dimsum. For around 4 or 5 times I patron there, but now apparently i swift to Tak Po for nice and less expensive dimsum. However, when my family come for vacation to Singapore, i still will bring them to come here because it will be more satisfying if you can bring your family on vacation to a bit "high class" dimsum restaurant while still under your budget

I ate dimsum buffet few times with and without the Groupon voucher.

With Groupon Voucher: I came 4 times (Thrice on Saturday, once on Sunday)

Very worth it. 2 pax usually $35+, so approximately 1 pax around $18. The har gao, sio may, ji jiao (chicken feet) and all other selections are very nice and fresh. So please give it a try if you do spot vouchers. The only bad thing is the location itself as it is very isolated, located inside Turf City.

If you can walk, you can take a bus and take a 15mins walk from the bus stop using GPS. Otherwise you can take taxi or if you can drive, that's the best. The first time we came, we were highly surprised because the restaurant's exterior is very ugly and messy. But when I entered, I changed my mind immediately. The waitresses and waiters were all in proper uniform with fast and pleasant services.

Without voucher: for weekend they got 50% discount (not sure about weekdays). Surprisingly when we visit the restaurant without vouchers, the food selections were not as fresh. The prawns are not juicy, the siew mai was cold and yet we paid more - around $60 2 pax. T_T

So my reasoning: They anticipated high customer traffic flow during the promotion period, hence the chefs would replenish the buffet spread with fresh supplies. However when there is no promotion, the chefs would not replenish the supplies so frequently.

So my suggestion, better come when Groupon got promotion

I purchased 3 vouchers from JuzToday and went there on a Sunday for lunch. The location is very far from MRT, so if you really want to come, you better find the nearest bus to there. When I reached there, I am very shocked and confused because the owner (or maybe the staff?) all spoke in Chinese (they are all PRC and I don't really know how to speak Chinese). The restaurant turned out more to be kopitiam-style. For hotpot, you will be seated indoors with aircon. If you want steamboat and grill BBQ, you must sit outside.

As mentioned from other reviewers, the meats and everything are not really fresh. The noodle is cold, the vegetable is cold, everything is cold, taste not nice and very limited choices and option. I tried the ma la soup (feels like drinking oil and we stopped drinking the soup after a while. Please don't choose this soup! On the other hand, the herbal mutton soup taste yummy! :>

Another good thing about this restaurant is the yummy chili crab! So at least that makes up for some of the disappointment. But still my advice: please don't eat there. There is much better steamboat grill restaurant in Bugis (Tan Quee Lan Street) or Chinatown etc with the similar pricing.
