Cheap eat at Orchard Smile Jul 04, 2013
Categories : Singaporean Chinese

Working at Orchard, lunch is generally more expensive. Luckily there are eateries like Delicacy Food Centre located at Far East Plaza to provide us a cheaper alternative for lunch!

For my lunch today, I selected 2 vegetable dishes (kang kong and potato) and a fish for $3.50. Relatively affordable considering that fishes at mixed veg stalls are usually expensive.

Taste wise, the food although not some world class delicacy, is quite acceptable for a normal day lunch.

Cheese Baked Bolognese Pasta OK Jun 24, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato | Pasta | Steaks and Grills | Halal

Decided to visit Swensen @ Orchard for a farewell lunch for my colleague as it is near our office.

For myself, I ordered the Cheese Baked Bolognese Pasta, which is okay. The cheese on the top is baked to crisp and very tasty, however the noodle is a little over-cooked.

We visited the restaurant during lunch time and there was a promotion for free drinks or ice cream with every meal item you order, thus it is very worth.

I ordered the root beer float, but the vanilla ice cream in the float was too creamy & milky for my liking.

Overall an okay meal.

Ramen + Fried Rice Set Smile Jun 24, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

I have always walked pass this restaurant but never went in so I decided to give it a go today.

Waiting time at the queue was long as it's dinner time on a Friday evening. However our food was served relatively quickly after we ordered.

While waiting for our food, we helped ourselves to this jar of prickled vegetables on the table - which is simply delicious! It tastes like the prickled vegetables you get from kway chap stalls and a good one at that.

Really nice and crunchy. I would definitely come back again just because they serve this FOC. tongue

For my meal, I ordered one of the sets with half portion ramen and half portion fried as I wanted to try everything! I forgot the name of the set though.

Fried rice is okay, but not fantastic. It's not hot when served and looked like it had been cooked and left in the cooker for awhile instead of those fry when you order kind. The egg is bland and are pieces on it's own rather than sticking to the rice.

Don't recommend trying. I have had much better Japanese Fried Rice elsewhere.

I love their ramen soup base! It's a little creamy but not over-whelming, and not too salty. I was a little disappointed that I only had half portion cos it's really delicious! Will come back for more!

We also ordered a plate of Gyoza to share. It was okay, quite standard Japanese gyoza. But I think the sauce to dip was a little salty though.

Overall, I would recommend fellow OpenRicers to try the ramen, but you can skip the fried rice. smile

Noodle Soup Cry Jun 12, 2013
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong

Was meeting my friend and we decided to visit Xin Wang for lunch. Not the best decision we made because the food was not of quality that day.

For Myself, I order Noodles soup and my friend ordered dry noodles.

The soup was bland and the noodles was really tasteless and soft.. Not chewy at all. To their credit, the luncheon meat was nice and crispy at the edges.

I knew it was going to be similar to instant noodles but I had expected it to be more flavorful.

I also ordered a flask of Watermelon ice blended. Watermelon ice blended is sweet and taste fresh.

Overall, the main course was a great disappointment so I would probably not be visiting again.

Dinner @ Roland Restaurant Smile Jun 10, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood

My family and I decided to visit Roland Restaurant for an early Father's Day celebration and try out their Chili Crab as they claimed to be the founder of this famous Singaporean dish.

The restaurant is located at the top of a multi-storey carpark near Marine Parade Central, but dont think that the restaurant would be run down because of that. Roland Restaurant is actually a very well renovated and clean place - also a popular venue for wedding dinners.

Some of the dishes we had:

Crispy crullers with baby squid

Crispy crullers is actually fried you tiao with fish paste. The crispy crullers tasted fresh and not too oily. Crispy on the outside and soft in the inside.. The baby squids are also deep fried, and then wok fried with sweet sauce. Very nice when paired with the crispy crullers.

Chili Crab

Chili Crab is what Roland Restaurant is really famous for and it's really very good! The sauce is really one of the best that I have ever tasted. I thought it would be really spicy looking at it as the sauce is really red and have chili oil floating, but it's actually not. The spiciness is just right for me as some of the chili crabs out there are so spicy that I have to keep gulping water every few mouths.

Salted Egg Yolk Crab

This is definitely a must try other than the Chili Crab! They serve 2 types of Salted Egg Yolk crab at Roland Restaurant - the wet & the dry, and this is the dry version.

This is so so delicious! The Salted Egg Yolk Crab also comes with a generous amount of thin strips of deep fried yam that's so crispy & yummy! seriously cant enough of this dish! Highly recommended.

Conclusion:
The prices at Roland Restaurant are steep, but it's definitely worth. Besides what is mentioned above, we also ordered the honey glazed duck, dark soy sauce prawns and Pomela Sago - all of which are very delicious. A great place to have a family gathering.
