Seeing all the photos on Instagram and the great reviews so far, we decided to give it a shot while around the area. It was surprisingly crowded for a Tuesday night, that there were only 2-3 tables left.

Hurrying to the counter, it was like a marketplace, having to vie for your desired pie before the last piece gets snapped up. Without any labels, we were pretty impressed that the staff took the effort to describe every single flavour to us, and did his personal recommendations.

Grasshopper ($7.5/-)

Peppermint with flourless chocolate cake, this seemed like a popular one probably due to how photogenic it is. I was expecting a refreshing burst of peppermint flavour to balance out the usually heavier tasting chocolate, but this was an utter letdown. The peppermint was too faint and it tasted like melted toothpaste, with just a hint of mint, overpowered by the cream. The chocolate was too mild too, and the typically good combination just didn’t go well in this rendition.

Coconut Lime Vodka ($8/-)

This was one that got my attention given my soft spot for fruity and citrus flavours. The pie crust was a signal for red flag though, with a gap between the filling and crust, seeming as though it was gonna fall apart.

Unlike the texture of the usual lime/lemon tarts, this was slightly stickier, somewhat like a pudding style, with cubes of vodka jelly in between. I liked how the vodka was strong enough and the lime added that refreshing touch, though a crumbly tart base would have gone better with this combination. Unfortunately, we couldn't taste the coconut in the cream on top where it's supposed to.

Morello Cherry Pie ($8/-)

I was attracted by the dark sugar coated lattice layer on top. Sour that we cringed at the first mouthful, it was then balanced by the sweet layer on top. I would have preferred it to be served fresh, so that the top and crust areas could remain hard and crisp as this lacked the texture. The fillings were disappointing too, filled with what seemed like jam, we would have preferred it to contain more juicy cherries!

This place might have been attractive with its theme and decor but we certainly wouldn't speak the same of its pies. Left disappointed, we didn’t like how the pies weren’t served fresh from the oven and were refrigerated that it left the crust and pie bases soggy. The fillings weren’t fantastic either, and definitely wasn’t worth the price. One redeeming factor was perhaps their service, where they were very helpful making recommendations and even offered to help us 'chope' our piece of pie till we were ready to dabao it.

This never fails to be featured dish when a group makes a trip down to any hawker centres in Singapore. We had this to share among the three of us. With a minimum order of two pieces, each comes at S$1.20.

The chicken wings were well marinated and beautifully barbecued with a golden-brown tan to the surface. Expect the honey-glazed chicken wings to be slightly sweet while the meat retained its moisture with the right amount of juiciness.

Have your table number handy before placing order at the stall as a queue is more than likely due to the limited number of barbecued chicken wings stalls at Whampoa Makan Place. It will be served to your table though there is minimal service to expect.

When it comes to finding the right bowl of wanton noodles that satisfied my palate, it is surely quite a tough task since living in the Hong Kong for a period of time had honed both my judging and expectations.

With a history dating more than three decades back, the owners had been humbly serving their wanton noodles. Be advised to take note of your table number as the lady would need it to serve the noodles over.

The portion size for S$3/- was surely value for money and in this case, calories worthy too! I usually do not expect the char siew to be the highlight and while the char siew served was not the best, it was the right cut with the right amount of lean meat complemented by a moist and sinful marbling of fats.

What nailed it for me was that perfectly cooked egg noodles which was springy and al dente. It still maintained just the perfect level of 'hardness' to the noodles and tossing it with the chilli at the base of the bowl made it a very delectable main. For that added tang, be sure to enjoy it together with the sliced green chillies.

I would have preferred it better if there was not as much of the broth inside the bowl, which somewhat diluted the homemade chilli.

While the wantons or dumplings were not the most perfectly wrapped, you cannot quite ask for more at such prices with four wantons to spare. It contained a small pocket of minced pork which was juicy but I could feel a strong punch of MSG hitting me as soon as I bit through that dumpling. I am not a huge fan when it comes to additives as such so that made the overall dish drop some points.

I would however gladly return in future just for that superb bowl of wanton noodles and char siew.

We were scouting the vicinity for some good food and the media clippings at the front of this stall caught our attention. We decided to give it a try and ordered a portion for sharing.

Priced at S$8/- , I was rudely surprised with the price and naturally I was expecting it to be calories worthy to say the least. As usual, photos do the talking!

The portion size was just about acceptable for the price though we would expect more eggs and/or oysters. What we enjoyed about the oyster omelette was the crispness to the surface (of the eggs) which complemented the plush, fresh oysters. The oysters were well-cleaned and was void of any grittiness from sand. The homemade chilli sauce won us over as it sharply cuts through our palate with a fiery tang due to the chillies and lime.

While everything was about right for me, I personally felt that it was too starchy as seen in the picture above. For those who desire it might say otherwise but I felt that it kind of overwhelmed the eggs and oysters and assumed the centerpiece of the dish, which seemed quite wrong in my humble opinion.

While service was not terrible, it was nothing to shout about. Word of advice, do remember your table number as a queue is likely. They will need to take down your table number and serve it to you subsequently.

Overall, it was still a palatable hawker dish but I continue my hunt for the best oyster omelette yet.

Decent chill-out spot OK Jan 18, 2014

Hidden in the ulu corner of Serangoon area, I was pretty shocked to see the stretch of Jalan Riang packed on a rainy weekday night, and scarce on parking lots. Possibly more known with Wimbly Lu and The Cajun Kings, Rokeby is hidden right at the end of the stretch.

With a pretty appetising menu and an absolutely famished company, we made our orders chop-chop and they all came pretty fast, much to our delight!

Vegemite Glazed Chicken S$11.90/-

The smell of this was irresistible with a savory touch and fresh crisp chicken drizzled with thick vegemite. Only upon my first mouthful did I realise that vegemite is the same as marmite, just that this was more on the savory side while marmite has a tinge of sweetness and is slightly stickier. It was a decent one though not the best for sure. I would have preferred my chicken drumlets on the crispy harder side, while this was more of the crispy crumbly type. It also got a bit soggy too fast, probably with the vegemite drizzled on top for too long. The closest I can think of that does chicken with sauces well is probably Four Fingers, with the crispy layer intact!

Truffle Shoestring Fries S$8.90/-

This was just an average one with too little truffle oil in my opinion, though my friend who said truffle tastes like petroleum found this to her liking.

My friends who’ve been eating with me have complained that I keep ordering this everywhere I go! tongue I’m still on the lookout for good truffle fries that can hit my top 3 list, so let me know your personal favourite!

Rokeby Chilli Mussels S$19.90/-

Served in a pot of spiciness, it comes with sliced bread to complete your meal, just in case the portion might sound too little. Just as its name suggests, it was indeed quite a fiery one and quite numbing that it almost masked the taste of the mussels if you’d dipped in any more of the sauce. I thought it could be a bit fresher for the mussels itself, though it’s still a decent one given how strong the sauce was. Good for the spicy lovers, though we find it just a tad too watery as a dip for the accompanying bread.

Mushroom Aglio Olio S$14.90/-

Cooked al dente and thankfully not oil laden like most aglio olios, the pasta was done pretty well. If you’re looking for some shiok spicy-satisfaction, this would be the one for you. Though for us, this was just too spicy that we can’t even taste the mushroom or any others in fact. Our friend enjoyed this though, with the subtle spiciness slowly growing to a shiok one for her!

Prawn Risotto S$18.90/-

While the previous two were too spicy, this was just lacking in flavours. Bland even though we’d tried this first, it lacked any resemblance of seafood, until you’ve had a bite of the prawns itself to taste it. Plus, this was overcooked that it tasted more like ‘Mui Fan’ than risotto. Quite a disappointing one for us!

Spaghetti Carbonara S$15.90/-

A friendly tip when it was served, you can actually add tabasco if it’s too creamy! I loved the strong bacon taste in it, just that it really was too creamy for our palates. Rich and flavourful, it’s probably a hit if you like strong flavoured dishes. It got a bit jelat for us and adjusting the creaminess certainly wasn’t easy!

The Kangasaurus S$22.90/-

This seemed the most exciting from its menu, with Kangaroo meat and cranberry sauce. Sounds pretty much like a Christmas-y dish! Recommended to be done medium rare, it was quite a dish that I was anticipating. Surprised that the kangaroo meat came in slices rather than a patty, it seemed like a pretty small portion initially, only to realise that it’s super filling with the bun and fries!

Well, there was honestly nothing worth raving about kangaroo meat, as it just tasted like your usual beef, just a tad leaner. Cooked to medium rare, it was nicely done, though we found it served too cold that it didn’t seem like it came straight from the grill. The cranberry sauce was a nice complement, with just a tinge of sweetness. I loved the buns though, that were nicely toasted to a crisp outside while the insides remained warm, delish! Though the main highlight was nothing fanciful, the combination was still a decent one.

Flat White S$5/-

A pretty coffee art is half the battle won, at least to me. An elaborate one on a flat white, that’s caught my attention! I loved how the flavour was a robust one coming through, and lingered for quite a while. Good enough to feel the kick coming in, though I find it too sour for my liking. While the first few sips were great, the acidity came through a little too strong as it settled. Not the best cup for me, though my friend thought it was a good one for her as she tends to like her coffee with that slight acidity to it.

It's probably a nice spot to hang out after work or over the weekend for some brunch, though I felt that the food was just pedestrian to speak of. I loved the ambience and how it wasn't crowded like most cafes are (or at least when I went on a weekday night), though the location and how hard it is to find parking there might turn some people off.
