Not for me Cry Feb 24, 2014

Visted Boston Shack during their lunch hour and order for myself a 3 course meal in this new establishment.

I love the place is brightly coloured with a strong sailor theme to reflect their food offerings.

There is both indoor and outdoor seating available which ample amount of fans to make sure you never have a hot moments. Service is also pretty fast and we didnt have to wait for long to get our dishes served up
Lobster Bisque

Lobster Bisque

There is definitely a strong seafood flavour, which I thought was quite good. I am pretty sure they didnt make this from scratch, but at least it didnt taste like it was bad can soup.
SGD 6.50
Fish & Chips (Cod)

Fish & Chips (Cod)

The battered fish was definitely fried till crispy, however there was too much batter and the fish was obviously not fresh as there was a fishy aftertaste, my other colleagues also second that opinion; so definitely a thumbs down from me.
The money would be better spent at Manhattan Fish Market
SGD 14
Tiramisu

Tiramisu

Creamy with no distinct alcohol or chocolate taste, I didnt bother wasting my calories on it after 2 mouthfuls of it
SGD 5

VERDICT
It would be hard to convince me to give this place another chance given the experience, and that there are so much other better cafes competiting for that dollars in your pocket.

Spending per head: Approximately $18(Lunch)

Mr Bean has been on my breakfast list for most of my working life cause of their ever tasty soybean drinks and pancakes. However there is one pancake which I am swearing off my life is their Ham & Potato pancake which I threw away away after 2 mouthfuls.
Potato Ham Pancake

Potato Ham Pancake

First mouthful was one of disgust where the fillings were so salty, the only other thing I tasted was the hint of sweetness from the pancake.

The second mouthful was just me making sure that my taste buds weren't haywire that day.

Bottom line, go for the other flavors, but definitely not the Ham & Potato flavor.

Spending per head: Approximately $2(Breakfast)

With a menu called Secret Martial Art Menu (武林秘籍) and the dining hall is called “Sword Discussion Room”(論劍堂), the restaurant is all decked up to go with the entire Chinese kungfu martial art world theme!

VERDICT

Sadly the entire meals was just mediocresad The dumpling skins are too thick, the potato is under-seasoned, the tofu, chicken and soup are all under flavored. I did wish the food was as good as the deco in the restaurant.

Spending per head: Approximately $20(Dinner)

Wormy worm Cry Oct 30, 2013

Noodle Around is located opposite Bugis Junction and near to Liang Seah Street. It is popular for their prawn mee which originated from Adam Road. However this time we decided to check out their steamboat as well as their crab dishes.

The steamboat is served with a fresh platter of prawns, fish, chicken and vegetables, together with a refillable soup base. The platter that you see below is a 2pax option which was definitely generous for the both of us. Sadly the meal was marred by a discovery we made when we were starting to dig in.

Yup. That was a worm on a leaf for us to have an additional “protein boost” it kind of turn me off the entire meal even though the platter was changed. We were more cautious of every ingredient that we had placed in the pot after that.

It definitely smell yummy but they were more sweet then peppery. The crab was obviously not fresh as the meat stuck to the shell of the crab, which we had to scrap of with our fingernails and teeth. Not the most pleasant experience when trying to enjoying the crab.

In terms of flavor, the chilli crab is definitely the more preferred choice compared to the black pepper crab. it isn’t very spicy so it will suit those who cant take spiciness well! However similar to the black pepper crab, the meat was stuck stubbornly to the shell of the crab.

I wouldn’t be heading back to Noodle Around for the items listed above, but I would still get it another go, for the highly recommended prawn noodles. Perhaps only after trying that would I be able to decide if this restaurant is a write off or a place which is worth heading back.

Food with a soul Cry Oct 30, 2013

Affogato was my choice of poison and it is so good! I really enjoy this cuppa of goodness. The bitterness of the coffee was just right to give the best mix of bittersweet!

We had ordered fried fish and fries as our sides, and we were pretty surprise that it was a pretty big portion of truffle fries! The fried fish on the other hand was nothing to rave about.

We tried two different mains, it was American Breakfast and Egg Benedict if I didnt remember wrongly.

The eggs benny were ok. But if you look at what is served on my plate, i guess you will agree that those are ingredients that were straight out from NTUC. (We even saw one of the personnel walk through the cafe with bags of ingredients to make these dishes )

Wholemeal sliced bread slap with a slice of ham (which was really dry) and eggs benny on top. With a obviously deep fried frozen hashbrown. Did it taste bad? Nopes. But I feel that it is no excuse for a cafe to serve soul-less food like that.

This was ok as well, other than the sauteed mushrooms and the eggs, everything else was out of a can or frozen packet and served on the plate again. The bacon was also hard and wasn't crispy too.

Muffet’s Room doesn’t fall into my list of recommended breakfast places. However I do note that they serve really good truffle fries and Affogato; and the portion of their meals are really big as well. If you are into quantity rather than quality, then this will be the place for you.

It’s location isnt the most convenient of all places to go to if you don’t have car, as it is right smack in the CBD area. So perhaps a weekday breakfast stop for CBD-ians?
