Hidden Treasure at Macpherson Smile Feb 22, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Steaks and Grills | BBQ

A Saturday afternoon out so I decided to grab the Mister to head over to Scrummy BBQ which is located in the quiet neighborhood of Macpherson.

The location is a little secluded and we took a while to spot the flashing signboard.

First Look

First Look

A pity about the storefront cause it hides the beautiful and warm cozy interior of this 2 storey cafe.

We were greeted by the warm and friendly owners of the place and very quickly we make up our minds to grab the Ribeye and Grilled Salmon which is really reasonably price at 15.90 and 13.90 respectively.

And that is the nett price! Scrunmy's doesn't charge GST and Service Charge, so the prices are what you see and what you get.

Rib Eye with Brown Sauce

Rib Eye with Brown Sauce

Soft and well portioned, this isn't a bad choice to go for. However being a picky steak eater, there is a hint beefy smell which it can do without.

What I would instead recommend to you will be this:

Grilled Fish

Grilled Fish

The red pepper sauce which the snapper fillet sat atop was really good. Robust in flavor and a hint of tangy sourness, it matches perfectly with the well cook snapper.

Definitely a place I would recommend for a decent lunch meal with friends and family. Perhaps it is because of the location, they are not getting the crowd and publicity which they should be getting.

If you are in the area, do hop over to give Scrummy's some support!

Everything but the chicken Smile Feb 21, 2014

Medium Rare Steak with Sides

Medium Rare Steak with Sides

Enjoyable lunch as always with Aston Specials! Their side dishes are always great and never once had I experience a batch where they miss the mark! I didn't managed to grab a more detailed picture, but this steak was a little tough despite getting it at medium rare. A small bump in the otherwise enjoyable meal.

My colleagues and I unfortunately always have a bad experience with their chicken dishes which comes with a distinctive burnt smell which we could gladly do without.

Comfortable sitting and attentive service staff, this outlet has been catered to suit the busy lunch hours that you are expect from the tall building surrounding it. They have recently changed to a order and pay first system which allows food to be served quickly without much delay.

The best bet is always to head over at 11.30 as you might have to wait for a seat if you head in 1/2 an hour later.

Categories : Coffeeshop

Looking for some Taiwanese Delights? The iconic Yong He Dou Jiang which hail from Taiwan has an outlet in Geylang which promise authentic Taiwanese delights. Simple and modest food, Yong He has loyal customer and fans who are there to tuck into their many savory delights and also their all Soya Bean Curd
Oyster Mee Sua

Oyster Mee Sua

This is pretty similar to what you can find in Taiwan where it is a little more peppery, and instead of oyster it is pork intestine slices. No smell from the pork intestine, so it is a thumbs up from me
Braised Minced Pork Rice

Braised Minced Pork Rice

If you have tasted the a bowl of Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice ( LU ROU FAN ) then this bowl wouldnt be able to match that taste. However if you haven't got to try it, then this would be a pretty yummy option for you.
Braised Minced Pork Rice

Braised Minced Pork Rice

Half the experience of enjoying braised pork rice will be the use for Japanese Pearl Rice (Zhen Zhu Mi) which is sorely slacking in this bowl. However the flavours and addition of salted vegetables, more lean meat and egg also made this a complete meal as compared to the bowl or rice in meat sauce which you would find in Taiwan.
Xiao Long Bao

Xiao Long Bao

Packed full with ingredients, this is an option you can consider ordering to add on to your mains

Prices here are relatively cheap for the quality of food serve. Get dimsums at SGD 2.60 per basket and I do look forward to try thie Toasted Buns which I enjoyed back in Taiwan. I left this place in good spirits so hopefully you will enjoy this 24 food outlet too!

My Coffee Haven Smile Feb 21, 2014
Categories : Café

I never really had a liking for coffee, unless it is a chocolate based version like Mocha. However a trip down to Chye seng Huat pretty much change all that.

As one of the most well known cafes in Jalan Besar, this coffe house took over the original "Chye Seng Huat Hardware Store" and turn it into a little coffee haven. With a centralized coffee counter that have baristas churning out cups and cups of beautiful aromatic coffee in the middle, you can sit right at the action and get lost in the hustle and bustle.

You will be surprised to find that theyy have a steady stream of customers all day hankering for a cup of their coffee even on weekday afternoons. My first trip down there and I was hooked, so there is little wonder why.
Espresso Milk

Espresso Milk

The coffee here was aromatic and slightly acidic(aka sour). I just found it amazing that coffee could taste this good. Thick and robust in flavour, it is the perfect cup of coffee on a rainy day. Even Mr. Heng my most anyhow tastebud food partner commented that this was good coffee.

Peach Turnover

Peach Turnover

I grabbed a peach turnover as well upon the recommendation of the staff and it turned out to be really good. Crumbly buttery soft, it was a perfect companion to the coffee.

VERDICT

TREID AND LOVE IT. I only can whine about the opening hours which only allows me to be there on the weekends. I cant wait to try their savoury menu next and get another cup of caffeine goodness.

Prawns and petai beans with sweet & sour chilli
ROJAK SERUT BANDUNG

ROJAK SERUT BANDUNG

Selection of young papaya, mango, pineapple and turnip in a sweet, sour and spicy sauce

This is like a mix of Singaporean’s chinese popiah ingredients with Thai papaya salad! Tangy sweet with a crunchy bite, a great appertiser to kick off your meal with!
OPOR NANGKA

OPOR NANGKA

Young jackfruit cooked in mild yellow curry
My favorite dish out of the entire lot, tt is creamy, fragrant and uniquely yummy! I like the texture of the Jackfruit which is found a little similar to Bamboo shoot and it makes me feel a healthier too. A must try item, cause I bet most of you haven’t got to try this before in Singapore.
GADO GADO

GADO GADO

Variety of local vegetables, beancurd and spiced peanut sauce
SATE LILIT

SATE LILIT

Fish & prawn paste skewered onto lemongrass and served with tamarind sauce
One of the highlight items at the buffet, it is a must try as you bite into the chunky well marinated fish and prawn paste! You don’t get a overdose of starch like the cheap ones outside. Really quality Satay Lilit!
SOTO AYAM MADURA

SOTO AYAM MADURA

Hearty chicken soup with rice cake, beansprout and shredded chicken
This was the first dish which I made a beeline for: A bowl of piping hot clear soup and my cheapo taste buds love beansprouts and fried shallots to the max!
MEE BAKSO

MEE BAKSO

Beef ball noodle in clear broth
Available at the cooking station, one of the skillful chefs will whip up a piping hot bowl of noodles right in front of you. It is light in flavour and definitely enjoyable. There are sauces available for you to tweak and play with the flavours to your liking!

I like that the desserts here arent crazy sweet such that you get sick of them easily, but the Nyonya Kuehs are pretty good at filling you up!

Adults: $32++
Child (6-12yrs): $16++
Any child below 6 years of age dines for free with every paying adult.

VERDICT

I enjoyed this buffet very much considering that this is the first time I have been to one which serves Indonesian fare. I don’t think they are stingy on the quality of food, and I often see them topping up the dishes to make sure they are kept hot and fresh for our picking.

The both times I have been at the location, the waiters were attentive and always ready to provide assistance. Quiet and quaint, this location is ideal for a quiet meal out, save for the occasional tourist groups which come and go. I like that I didn’t have to jostle of space while trying to get my hands on the food, major plus point!

So if you are looking for a weekend meal to treat yourself to, Street50′s Roulette of Flavours can be something to look at!

Psst! I heard they are running a Facebook promotion where you get SGD 10 off each paying adult at the buffet!
