Bukit Timah plaza isn't exactly known for good food, so this place was a rare find.

The place advertises its hot dogs, which are very simply priced, but it does fantastic, restaurant-quality pastas (read: the stuff you'd otherwise pay $30 for).

We ordered the creamy tomato meatballs and the smoky scallops risotto. They have a set for 2 where you get 2 main dishes (pastas or mains like chicken chop/fish and chips) plus a soup, a side (tater tots/fries) and 2 drinks.

The meatballs were served with penne in a sundried tomato sauce. The sauce had a strong tomato flavour and was subtly sweet. Very impressive for a $10 dish. They were generous with the meatballs too.

We had to top-up a couple of dollars for the scallops risotto, as this normally costs $17 on its own. Compared to the meatballs pasta, the risotto was pretty average. The rice had a nice bite to it, and the scallops were well-seared. However, it lacked the same punch that the tomato sauce had.

Outstanding Jap Food Smile Nov 03, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

Great food is popping up all over far east, and this is perhaps the best of them all.

The sushi bar sells mostly sushi, sashimi, rolls and some snacks.

We ordered the salmon aburi roll, which you HAVE to try. Raw salmon, along with some cucumber and mayonnaise, is rolled in sushi rice and seaweed, then topped with more salmon and mayonnaise, which is then torched. Each bite is a perfect flavour combination. The restaurant has clearly mastered the perfect mix of cold salmon to cooked salmon to crunchy cucumber to smooth mayo. Even though it isn't exactly cheap, the roll is worth every cent.

We also ordered the swordfish (mekajiki) sashimi. The sashimi is undoubtedly quite fresh, and prices are reasonable.

I would say that this is probably the best Japanese food you'll get for the price. Unfortunately, perhaps because of our bad luck, it was a good 20 minutes before we were served (we came just as the restaurant opened). Will be returning, in hope of better service, and to try more dishes.

For all the hype over Saveur, I've visited both the Purvis St and Far East branches. The food is almost exactly the same.

At the Far East branch, which is really crowded during lunch hour, there is a rather innovative system to handle the table arrangements. You can key in your details, and you'll get a call when a table is ready for you, which is pretty cool because then you can walk around and shop instead of queuing.

Skipping the classics like their duck confit and pasta, we decided to go for the foie gras with apple and vanilla. This was actually a bit gamey, and the portion was minute. It did have the characteristic smoothness of foie gras, and went well with the accompaniments.

The main dish was the pork belly with lentils and sous vide egg. The pork was well-flavoured, and the meat was really juicy. The only gripe was that the crackling wasn't crispy, but instead rather chewy and tough to cut. The egg and creamy lentils went well with the pork, and I enjoyed this rather innovative pairing.

Service was slow, and we were initially served the wrong main course. The table next to us, trying to get their bill, complained as a group of 4 or so waitresses gathered behind the counter to take photos, completely unaware of the diners.

Saveur tries to be very pretentious with their food, and quality is very far from what you get at top restaurants. However, neither can you compare them to expensive places. It continues to do well for food in that price range.

Had a burger craving and decided to give this place a try. Was rather empty on a weekday at lunchtime, with only 3 tables full. L'Entrecote and &Made share the same premises, so you can order both burgers and steak.

I had the NY Bacon while my friend tried the "B" burger. You can also order custom-made burgers by choosing the patty and add-ons like onions, mushrooms and even foie gras. Burgers come with fries, and you can upgrade to truffle fries for $3, so we chose to do that for 1 set.

I must say, the burgers are of good quality. They were done medium-rare, and the meat is juicy and flavourful, unlike many other burger places. The cheese and other toppings were also more premium. The NY Bacon comes with a flavoured mayonnaise, which I enjoyed thoroughly. Overall, I did enjoy the burgers. The truffle fries were well-perfumed with the truffle oil, and were very enjoyable.

In total, we spent $50 for 2 burgers, which I think is pretty unreasonable given that they were of average size, even though this is in Orchard Rd. Will not be returning, as there are many other burger places (like De Burg, Relish, Handburger, etc.) that are more sensibly priced, if not as good.

Spending per head: Approximately $25(Lunch)

Good, homely food OK Nov 03, 2013

This little place is hidden along a small road off Bt Timah with several other eateries.

We decided to order their signature duck Mee Sua along with the Penang prawn Mee. The Mee Sua came with a generous helping of duck that was tender. The Mee Sua was springy. The broth was flavorful and comforting, without being too herbal in taste. However, the prawn Mee was rather average and the soup while tasty was nothing to shout about.

We had the sago for dessert, which was good and came with a generous portion of gula Melaka and coconut milk. It was priced at $4 though, which is quite unreasonable given the small portion.
