Lychee Martini Cake! Smile May 19, 2014

Two classmates, Ng Hui Yi and Ann Chong studied at Le Cordon Bleu in London, which is located in Bloomsbury Square. That is how the name of the shop, Bloomsbury Bakers, came about. Situated in Bendemeer, this place is only a 5 minute walk away from Boon Keng MRT.

The menu here is simple. Cakes are their specialty here, with a small selection of drinks.

The Lychee Martini Cake ($7) are not for the faint-hearted here as it tasted rather heavy and the lychee bits between the layers of the lychee cake is covered in martini. When compared to Pine Garden’s Cake (the only other place to serve Lychee Martini Cake), Pine Garden’s will fare better as it is more wallet-friendly and the taste of the martini is more distinct and even throughout the lychee bits.

Despite being located in a relatively aged estate, it is able to even attract aged people as there are old people patronizing the shop every now and then. If you are around the Bendemeer / Boon Keng area, this place is also a quiet area to visit and relax.

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/05/14/kin-kin-chilli-pan-mee-534-macpherson-road/

Recently opening their Singapore branch with much hype 2 months ago (to the extent of having to queue up to 2-3 hours just for the food on their first few days), Restoran Kin Kin is a popular restaurant in KL specializing in their chilli pan mee.

Besides having the original pan mee and other types of you mian, they also have soups.

The Signature Dry Chilli Pan Mee ($5) looks like an ordinary dry ban mian when it was served out, but after mixing the chilli paste that is provided on the table, it’s not hard to see why this is one of the favourites here. The chilli, while not being overly spicy, brought out the flavour in the ban mian after mixing the minced meat, ikan bilis, poached egg, fried onions and meatballs. It tasted like a dry ramen you can get in a Japanese restaurant, except that this is more flavourful, more filling, less dry and definitely more spicier (but less spicier than other types of noodles).

The chilli that is responsible for the great tasting pan mee.

As the hype for this place becomes more manageable, it is now easier to have a meal here (be it for lunch or for dinner, dine-in or takeaway). Given that this place is around the MacPherson / Tai Seng area, this place will be filled with the lunch crowd!

Coffee business! Smile Apr 23, 2014

Opened about a few weeks back by a barista who worked previously in Loysel’s Toy, Percolate has already gained a name for itself. Selling sandwiches, cakes and coffee, this place is flooded with people during the weekends (which is why I chose to go there on a weekday!)

It is interesting to note that the bakes and drinks here comes from various sources. The bakes and cakes here comes from Cakestand, a bakery located at Katong Shopping Centre that also operates an online order system. The pastries are from French bakery BAO. The tea comes from local tea company Amuse Projects, and the coffee? Papa Palheta’s Terra Firma blend (of course!)

The drinks and sandwich menu is rather simple.

There is a high tea set which cost $8.50, consisting of any cakes + coffee/tea. The Chocolate Cake ($6) here feels firm and tasted great. Chocolate lovers will definitely like this.

The 5oz White ($4) tasted strong and smooth, but may not suit those who don’t want their coffee to taste too acidic as this one can be slightly stronger.

Given their location (near the Bedok Town Centre), it is easy to visit the place especially since other cafes around Bedok are further inwards in Fengshan and doesn’t really specialize in coffee.

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/03/31/nylon-coffee-roasters-block-4-everton-park/

As one of the earliest coffee joints to surface, Nylon Coffee Roasters is also one of the earliest cafes to set up within Everton Park. With limited seating space when they started out, they have since expanded to include a big communal table and a few more seats.

Their research laboratory where they experiment with different coffee beans!

The 6oz White Coffee ($4.50) is made using their own Four Chairs blend, that provides a creamy and balanced taste. The coffee tasted milky, while still maintaining the strong taste.

Being a roaster, their coffee beans and blends can be found in other cafes as well. If you are around the CBD / Everton Park / Tanjong Pagar area, why not visit their main shop instead?

Full of cereals Smile Apr 12, 2014

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/04/05/the-cereal-pantry-block-45-telok-blangah-drive/

The Cereal Pantry opened recently at Telok Blangah, within walking distance from The Marshmallow Tree, but instead of having the usual fares like macarons or cakes, they sell cereals here.

The cereal menu is imprinted on the wall.

Get the Double Crunch with Waffle Crisp, Honey Crunch Corn Flakes ($3, double scoop), Mini Marshmallows ($0.95) and Fresh Milk ($1.50), which is a sweeter combination.

The Iced Latte ($4.80) isn't your usual cup of coffee. It comes in the form of coffee ice cubes, which you have to stir it with the milk provided. This tasted strong even when the milk is added in, which will also pacify those who wants low acidity in their coffee.

Although the food concept here is rather unique for a cafe, cereal is something that can be easily whipped up at home and will probably serve better for those who doesn't have the time to do so. The drinks here says otherwise though. If you are around Telok Blangah area, do give this a place a try still!
