Source of great coffee! Smile Apr 16, 2014

As one of the earliest coffee joints to surface, Nylon Coffee Roasters is also one of the earliest cafes to set up within Everton Park. With limited seating space when they started out, they have since expanded to include a big communal table and a few more seats.

Their research laboratory where they experiment with different coffee beans!

The 6oz White Coffee ($4.50) is made using their own Four Chairs blend, that provides a creamy and balanced taste. The coffee tasted milky, while still maintaining the strong taste.

Being a roaster, their coffee beans and blends can be found in other cafes as well. If you are around the CBD / Everton Park / Tanjong Pagar area, why not visit their main shop instead?

Neighbourhood "cake shop" Smile Apr 12, 2014

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/04/04/2-loaves-bakery-block-46-3-commonwealth-drive/

While being in the vicinity of Tanglin Halt, I decided to visit 2 Loaves Bakery that has just opened its door 3 days ago! The owner, Sherlyn Kon, used to run an online baking shop until she found out that the former bakery that occupies the space has decided to close down, and she took over the space!

Their hot selling item here is the Banana Loaf ($5.80), which tasted sweet and moist. The generous amount of bananas used also made it taste rich in flavour.

I also got to try the Cinnamon Bun that came out fresh from the oven. It is evenly spiced with cinnamon, giving it a fresh fragrance of cinnamon and sweetness with every bite.

This place also serves other kind of cakes like S'Mores Loaf and Valrhona Chocolate Loaf, cookies like The In-between and even jam spreads. If you are around the Commonwealth / Queenstown area, do give this place a visit!

The passion of several entrepreneurs, who has worked in various sectors including F&B, advertising, hotels and even in fitness lead to the formation of an industrial-chic cafe called My Awesome Cafe. Most of them, including the owner Franck Hardy, has brought their expertise in working in restaurants, cafés and hotels over (and yes some even worked in Michelin-star restaurants / cafés before!).

Located below the creative agency Mangham Gaxiola, it occupies the what previously is Chung Hwa Free Clinic and specializes in all-day breakfast, salads, sandwiches, coffees, teas, beers and liquor. They are also the only place in Singapore to sell Mexican Coca-Cola for the long term (read: Coca-Cola with Cane Sugar! The first being Omakase Burger but was only available for a limited time)

The food menu

And the drinks menu! (look at the Mexican Coca-Cola while you’re at it!)

The Croissant with Scrambled Eggs and Smoked Salmon ($8++) is easily one of the better tasting breakfast food out there. The croissant is filled with strips of cheese and the smoked salmon, which was smoked to the right texture and taste. The scrambled eggs, however, tasted slightly more like an omelette instead but still maintains its moist texture.

The coffee served here are blends made from Columbian, Brazilian and Sumatran beans. The Latte ($4.50++) is full bodied and maintains the strong taste of the roasting process. Anyone who does not like bitterness may not like this even as the right amount of milk is added into the coffee.

In overall, this place will surely attract the crowds with their passion and patriotism to the food and service served here. If you are around the CBD / Tanjong Pagar / Telok Ayer area, why not pop by this place? I know I would, and will try the Mexican Coca-Cola the next time round!

Cakes and just cakes! Smile Feb 27, 2014

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/02/19/cakes-literally-138-owen-road/

Ever since L’Etoille Cafe opened on one of the shophouses along Owen Road, a few more cafes came out, namely Cakes Literally and P Bistro. As I was aiming for something light, I went for Cakes Literally.

This statement stand true to its meaning.

For coffee, the Terra Firma blend from Papa Palheta is used here (hooray for great coffee!). The tea selections comes from Australian tea brand T2 (not commonly found elsewhere as it is only sold in one place in Singapore, which is Tangs VivoCity)

The menu based itself mostly on cakes.

As compared to other places, the Carrot Cake ($7) here fared slightly better than others. It is rather firm and not too crumbly. The cream cheese is also rich in flavour.

If you are around the Farrer Park / Pek Kio / Jalan Besar area, this place is a great place to grab a slice of cake and relax.

Reminiscence the past Smile Jan 17, 2014

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/01/17/da-zhong-cafe-block-105-hougang-ave-1-hainanese-village-centre/

Ever thought how does the coffee shops and hawker centres produces coffee at affordable prices? It is via the old and traditional method of brewing coffee and filtering it through the “socks”, attached to the flasks. As most places has already switched to using steel flasks, Da Zhong Cafe continue to use brass flasks.

The Kopi-O ($0.60) is excellent as it tasted strong and bitter (the traditional way). Great kopi at a cheap price, this is definitely one of the better ones out there.

The Steamed Bread with Kaya & Butter ($1) is also something to order. Usually not sold elsewhere nowadays, the steamed bread was soft and fluffy with excessive kaya & butter. Thumbs up for this as well!

With such traditional kopi sellers being a banishing trade, it is great to order a cup of kopi and a slice of bread to relieve memories if you are around the Kovan area.
