Coffee with pizza! Smile Mar 29, 2014

Located within Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar is a new coffee joint called One Man Coffee, which specializes in coffee and pastries. You must be thinking, won't both businesses clash by operating in the same shop space? The answer is no, simply because Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar operates only for dinner, so One Man Coffee can operate during the day!

The blend used here is by Stranger's Reunion. The Flat White ($5) tasted creamy and milky while not being too overpowering.

I felt that the French Toast ($10) here might have been named wrongly, as it doesn't feel like one, but once you have had a mouthful of this you wouldn't even mind the naming! The brioche toast is soaked in custard and is topped with blueberry jam, cream and walnuts. The brioche is soft and easily melts in your mouth after a bite, while bursting flavours of milkiness and sweetness. The walnuts provides the crisp in this, the cream enhances the creaminess and the blueberry jam enhances the sweetness, but both the cream and jam could be left out as it is great on its own.

Yet another place to come to if you are in the Thomson area, but do remember that it only opens in the day!

Having relocated from their original store at Changi Airport Terminal 3 (which is only a takeaway store), Butter Studio has now moved to Jalan Besar, where now it has a dine-in space and still offers the same variety as their previous outlet.

They now have all-day brunch!

Sweets selection

And the cupcakes, cakes, tarts and drinks menu!

The Sea Salt Caramel Nutella Tart ($6.90), which is one of their signature items, is satisfying. The Nutella, mixed with the sea salt caramel and accompanied with walnuts on top, tasted rich. The tart crust is firm and not too crumbly.

Yet another option for bakes and cakes within the Jalan Besar area (and it's also rather convenient since it faces the main road!)

Cupcakes can be better OK Mar 29, 2014

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/03/29/teneleven-cupcakes-far-east-plaza/

Opened since April last year, TenEleven Cupcakes is a small takeaway kiosk with a small counter that can seat 2 people that is located at the basement of Far East Plaza.

Order the Banana cupcake ($3.50) if you like bananas as the batter for the cupcake is made of bananas, topped with banana cream and a slice of banana. I felt this is rather ordinary and tasted normal.

The Chocolate Peanut Butter ($3.80) cupcake fares better than the Banana (a personal preference) as this tasted more rich than the latter. The chocolate cupcake slightly lacks in flavour, but is quickly replenished for by the toppings of peanut cream, chocolate cream and bits of peanuts, making the whole cupcake taste rich and sweet.

If you are looking for a sweet bite near the Orchard area, look for this hidden spot!

Great fried chicken! Smile Mar 25, 2014

I

Ever since Filipino fast-food chain Jollibee (which specializes in their fried chicken) opened their first outlet in Singapore at Lucky Plaza, crowd here has never failed to get shorter, with queues stretching over to the neighbouring units. However, the queue clears off fast as well, though be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes to make your order.

The 2-piece Chickenjoy with Rice and Drink ($6.60, +$0.20 to up-size drink) is the signature dish of the place. It’s not hard to see why. The chicken is crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. As such, oiliness of the fried chicken is kept to the minimum. The rice and chicken is best mixed and dipped into the gravy provided, which tasted similar to the chicken gravy used in KFC’s Whipped Potato.

If you do not want rice, the 1-piece Chickenjoy with Spaghetti and Drink ($6.60, +$0.20 to up-size drink) is an alternative. This meal was topped up with additional fries ($1.50). The spaghetti is sweet and is full on tomato taste. The fries are crisp but is certainly not one of their highlights.

Definitey one of the better fried chicken joints around the Orchard area. Don’t let the queues repel you from going!

Perfect enclosure Smile Mar 23, 2014

Categories : Café

The new place to hit the Farrer Park / Pek Kio / Jalan Besar scene is recently opened Wood Shed who specializes in coffee and cakes currently.

The drinks menu is rather simple.

The Flat White ($5.50) is made from a blend sourced from a local roaster. It tasted strong and is full-bodied. There is a slight bitter taste on the last drop however.

The cakes selection are sourced from Cakes Literally, which is just a few street away. The Red Velvet cake ($6) is firm and not crumbly. The amount of cream cheese added in each layer felt just right as well.

Come April, they will be selling mains in their menu. If you are around the Pek Kio area, this is a great addition to the late night brunch spots to visit by then!
