Old Chang Kee Puffs OK Feb 10, 2014   (Related Review)

If you are an ardent fan of Old Chang Kee by now you can distinguish the different markings on each of their selected puffs.

Red dot for their sardines puffs
Green dot for Chicken Mushroom
No dot or original are their signature Curry O

Costing each at S$1.40.

The ingredients for all puffs are still good except that the standard of the skin for all the puffs have dropped.

Lately, I noticed there are pock marks on almost all of their puffs.

Its time to check the quality control of the pastry.

The crowd at The Old Malaya Café is specially long during lunch hours.

Having tasted the popiah during my last trip, I decided to order a bowl of Chicken Macaroni Soup.

Definitely it was a good choice.

The soup light and refreshing with generous amount of big pieces of chicken meat.

The chicken was cooked just right and the taste succulent.

Thumbs Up for this soup!

Polar Brownie Cake OK Feb 09, 2014

Indeed a chocolate indulgence with Polar Puffs and Cakes brownie.

This all time favourite brownie cake with yummy chocolate slabs on every side.

Rich in flavour and decadent chocolate fudge with walnut chunks for this double layered cake.

Price at S$18.50 for this petite order.

I kept the balance of the chocolate slabs and melt them into chocolate fondue to go with the sweet Korean strawberries.

Waste not, want not, here's the chocolate fondue made from the balance of the Chocolate slabs.

Popiah Smile Feb 06, 2014

Its been more than one and half years since I last visited The Old Malaya Café at Tampines Mall.

We wanted to lunch at the nearby restaurant but it was packed and my family didn't want to queue, we decided to visit The Old Malaya Café for something light.

I ordered the Popiah Roll at $2.80 each.

There were a good choice of ingredients in the popiah filling include grounded peanuts which makes the overall popiah fragrant. Though I prefer my popiah with egg skin, this plain popiah skin is also soft textured.

Will go back for more dishes from the Café in due course.

Yu Sheng a “must try” dish for every Lunar New Year. But the question would be “where to try Yu Sheng this year”.

This has become an ubiquitous Singapore tradition of the Prosperity Toss to welcome the New Year for better fortune, good health and the list goes on.

A salad dish with thinly sliced fish most common “salmon” and a mixture of variety of colourful shredded vegetables with a variety of sauces and condiments added.

Traditionally, the fish served with Yu Sheng was mackerel, but other seafood such as abalone, lobster may be used instead. The colourful choices of julienned vegetables such as yams or radishes are dyed red and green with food colouring. Included are white radish, carrots and cucumbers. Pomelo and red picked ginger are also added in some servings. Crispy crackers symbolizing “gold ingots” is a must have ingredient.

Putien “Yu Sheng” has a flavorful twist of added seaweeds from the city of Putien. The ingredients combined representing all the blessings you would want in the New Year for many auspicious days ahead.

Prices ranging from S$26.80++ (small), S$36.80++ (medium) and S$49.80++ (large).
