One can easily spot the colour storefront from afar

One can easily spot the colour storefront from afar

OMB stands for 'Oh My Bacon', and no prizes for guessing what they specialise in! Yeap, almost all their dishes have bacon incorporated, from the usual pasta, breakfast plate to more unconventional ones like bacon ice cream (say what?) and desserts.

The interior is playfully decorated with bacon figures and cartoons, plus the mismatched furniture brings out the lively and quirky style in this cafe.

Bacon Bomb ($28): This consists of pork, beef, bacon and cheese all rolled into one, and served with mashed potatoes and a few leaves below. It's one giant roll so it's good for two persons to share. However, it was a little hard to share because once we sliced it open, everything seemed to fall apart! Taste wise I felt like there was a lot going on. There was the bacon, beef etc, and they didn't go that well together. Or maybe it's cos I'm not really a meat person so I can't appreciate the flavours all at once...? Otherwise it's a perfect dish for carnivores out there!

The Cure ($21): It's more like the usual Big Breakfast plates that most cafes offer, but this one here has a bit more ingredients: sausage, bacon, potatoes, mushrooms, eggs (scrambled or sunnyside) and waffles or pancakes. It also comes with a small cup of maple syrup and butter. I love the waffles as it was crispy and not doughy. All the other ingredients were alright, nothing spectacular. Nothing stood out much for me here.

Beef and Bacon Cheeseburger ($17): This was a beef patty with bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles served in toasted sesame buns, with a side of paprika fries. My dining partner said it tasted ordinary, only slightly better than the run-of-the-mill fastfood burgers.

Bacon Love, Truly ($15): This is essentially a BLT. You can choose between classic, candied or spicy bacon, and it is served in pita bread smothered with bacon jam. We went with candied bacon for this sandwich and it was sweet just right. I was hoping they could spice up this sandwich a bit more, because otherwise it's like a Subway sandwich?

Waffles with Bacon Ice Cream ($14): As mentioned earlier the waffles were of a good texture, light and crispy and not doughy. The bacon ice cream tasted a bit salty (must be from the bacon haha) but it was injected with bacon bits here and there, which tasted like bak kwa! Haha but this is indeed a unique flavour.

Jekyll and Hyde (6 for $12): These are bacon strips dipped in white and dark chocolate. It really was a good combination of sweet and salty! I preferred the dark chocolate as it was slightly less sweet. A good dessert to end the meal!

Overall I think OMB is creative with its bacon-inspired food. It doesn't have GST or service charge too. But it has to work harder to improve the taste and quality of the food, otherwise it'll just be quite ordinary.

Full house on a weekday lunch

Full house on a weekday lunch

This is a relatively new cafe, having been opened early last month. But they've gotten off to a good start, with a full house on a weekday lunch! The cafe has a geometric theme-cum-industrial chic design. It gives a very clean yet welcoming feel that makes one feel good upon stepping in. One can tell that they focus a lot on quality, because the service crew's uniform are the long-sleeved, white-collared kind, and it does make them look smart and professional (service is good too). Even their napkins are the thick and super high quality ones!

Buckwheat Pancakes ($18): This is the reason why I visited this cafe. The pancake is very, very visually appealing! As per the description, this is really a soft, fluffy pancakes made of buckwheat flour, topped with berry compote, passionfruit curd, crunchy cornflakes and a slab of butter. Thyme-infused maple syrup is served at the side.

As you can see here, the pancake still has pockets of air in them, hence its lightness and fluffiness! It was a little unusual on my first mouth, because I've not tried anything made of buckwheat flour before. On its own the pancake will taste plain, but with the assortment of toppings, the whole dish came together very well. I love the berry compote and passionfruit curd! Both weren't too sour, just a slight tang to balance the sweet berries. For a pancake lover I could finish this, but I suggest to you guys to share it haha! The price tag is also high for a dish like this, but it's worth a try! (:

I will return to try other items, like the highly raved scrambled eggs croissant and their sundaes! Do come early though, as it gets very crowded especially weekends.

For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2015/08/food-review-roosevelts-diner-and-bar.html

At the ground floor of apartment Dorsett Residences, Roosevelt's Diner and Bar is conveniently located outside Outram Park Exit H. The interior is spacious and I love the high ceilings that give that relaxing and cool vibe. I was here to try their new weekend brunch menu.

Brioche French Toast Waffles ($14++): This is actually a brioche bun soaked in Amaretto-laced moisture, and then pressed into the waffle machine. So you get this bun-c**-waffle creation! The texture quite dense to me - well, rightly so I guess since it's not your normal waffle batter. For people who don't like bread, perhaps you should stay away from this, because you'll complain that it's too gelat. But I enjoyed the combination of everything - I tasted a bit of cinnamon which was just right to go well with the mixed berries sauce. And with that Vanilla ice cream, how can it go wrong?

Spiced Potato Bacon Hash ($16++): This dish consists of spiced potato, bacon, poached egg and served with house-made tomato relish. Even though I don't like potato and hence the dish wasn't my top favourite, I have to say that the potato was delicious and the spices sure did give it lots of flavour. A tip: break the poached egg and mix everything up together.

Crab Cake Benedict ($21++): A more unique twist to the classic (and perhaps overdone) Eggs Benedict, this one replaces the usual ham/smoked salmon/mushrooms with crab cake! It's served on english muffins and with a thin layer of garlic mayo, plus a side salad. The eggs were runny and nicely poached. But I can't quite get the taste of the crab cake... Except its saltiness.

BBQ Baby Back Ribs ($22++): Even though I'm not a meat person, I was delighted that the meat fell off the bone with one slice of the knife/fork! It was tender, not too salty and oh-so-good with the BBQ sauce! And I like the accompaniment of the corn salsa too!

Breakfast Waffle Candied BLT ($14++): Essentially all the breakfast items sandwiched between two crisp layers of waffles. And it was so delicious! It sounds like a very plain idea but the tastes, aesthetics... all worked for me. On the whole it was a bit salty but I guess cos there's bacon. But I still love this dish - and oh yes, the waffles! It didn't turn soggy despite the many fillings inside. And you'll think that you'll feel gelat since it's waffles right? But no, it filled me up just fine!

Apple Berry Crumble ($10++): All my favourites in this dessert. Muesli and berries crumble mixed with some apple slices and then topped with vanilla ice cream, this was polished clean!

All in all the newly introduced food in the weekend brunch menu are worth a try. Some dishes are rather unique, like the Brioche French Toast Waffle and Spiced Potato Bacon Hash.

Food Review: Amazonia Bistro OK Feb 26, 2016

Amazonia is an indoor children's playground where there are giant slides, mosh pits filled with balls, mini golf course etc to cater for the little ones to play and enjoy. In its premises there is also a bistro, which serves a mix of Western and local food. This is where parents can sit and have their meal while their kids.

I went for their food tasting and here's what we tried:

Apple Juice ($5): Very ordinary, and quite expensive for this glass.

Caesar Avocado Salad ($13.80): A lot of ingredients here, including grilled juicy chicken breast, sliced avocado, hard boiled egg, cherry tomato and bacon bits. It was not bad overall, and tasted fresh.

Chef's Nasi Goreng ($12.70): The plate that we were served was for doubled up in portion for tasting purposes. This came with a lot of ingredients too, such as a drumstick, fried egg, two sticks of Chicken satay, keropok and some achar. The drumstick was delicious with tender meat, while the satay was marinated and cooked very well!

Sweet and Spicy Garlic Tiger Prawn ($15.20): Two prawns were served with steamed rice and cooked vegetables. Unfortunately I felt the prawns didn't taste that fresh. The meat was quite soft and mushy...

Chocolate Fondant Cake ($7.50): As a dessert lover, I enjoyed this. It's like a lava cake because the slightly molten chocolate filling flowed out (though quite slowly) upon cutting the cake. The chocolate was rich, but the scoop of ice cream melted really fast.

Overall, decent food here, though I wouldn't choose to dine here given the other food options within Great World City.

For the full review and more photos, head over to http://toroamtheworld.blogspot.com/2016/01/food-review-bao-today-dim-sum-high-tea.html

Their high tea buffet is done 'tapas style' and has no menu because the dishes served rotates on a regular basis. There are more than 40 varieties and it's served ala carte where the friendly service crew will bring out the food for you. This high tea buffet is only available at their branch in Rendezous Hotel. There is ample space and there are some booth seats too decorated in Oriental style. For non-buffet patrons, you may order from their normal ala carte menu at the counter, with the following menu above the cashier counter. Free flow Iced Peach Tea and Ice Lemon Tea is included for the buffet.

Recommended dishes:

Siew Mai: Plump with sufficient meat

Pork Chop: Tasty and flavourful

Nyonya Style Steamed Fish: Very fresh

Chives and Prawn Dumpling: Sufficient fillings

Char Siew Bao: Meaty and flavourful. Buns are fluffy

Zha Jiang Mian: Tasty, even with the noodles alone

Mushroom Dumpling: Love the mushrooms inside. But skin a bit thick

Scallop Dumpling: Fresh prawns and scallop!

Liushabao: BEST DISH. Salted egg yolk custard was flowy, not too sweet or buttery. Buns were light and had a tinge of pandan

Average dishes:
Wanton in Spicy Chilli Sauce
Har Gow
Yu Piao/Jellyfish thingy
Chee Cheong Fun
Pork and Prawn Dumpling
Red Bean and Banana Pancake

All in all I enjoyed the food here, as most of them hit the mark for me. Some dishes may be replaced every now and then based on customer feedback and the demand for them. Of course, new ones will be added. There were actually a few more dishes that was available that day but we were too full to try them!

The service crew were friendly and patient with us too, and gave us recommendations for strategic eating haha! What I like about this buffet is that you don't need to order in quantities of a basket, but down to a single piece! For example if you want to try more Siew Mai, you need not order a basket that has 3 or 4 in it, but can simply request for one if you're too full.

And another great thing about this buffet is its wallet-friendly prices! Going on a weekday afternoon will not cost you more than $20 (after taxes), and the most expensive period on weekend nights is less than $27! Quality dim sum at affordable prices - what's not to love?
