Yakiniku Charcoal Grill Smile Jan 03, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | BBQ

Located at the heart of Raffles Place, next to the Singapore River, Arashi Yakiniku Charcoal Grill Restaurant is the right place for you to have authentic Japanese BBQ.

Let's start from the best, “Ohmi" grade A4 wagyu beef. From Tenderloin, to Ribeye, to Sirloin. Simply look at the marbling of the beef. I must say, every piece of meat melts in your mouth. All so tender.
Japanese Tenderloin - $68.80

I'm not so much of a fan of BBQ pork tho.. I'm a little bit over conscious about that layer of fats. But to others, pork belly is one of the must for a BBQ!
Japanese Kurobuta : Belly - $19.80

They also have pork collar meat which was more to my liking, slightly less fatty and more chewy.
Japanese Kurobuta: Collar - $20.80

Other than beef and pork, they also serve chicken.
Chicken – Momi Tare Chicken - $9.80

The chicken was tender, but it might not be under my must get dish for Japanese BBQ. I would rather you try the beef or pork. ;)

Arashi also serve seafood platter which includes Fresh Tiger Prawns and Scallop, together with Salmon that is being serve in a separate aluminum bowl. The seafood was fresh, especially the prawns, they were sweet and juicy. You know that the prawns are fresh when the meat can be separated from the shell, and the crunchy meat! As for the salmon, it was being serve in some sauce together with a little bit of butter. The sauce did go well with the salmon. And being a fan of salmon, I love this dish a lot!

We also tried some of their a la carte menu.
First up, the tempura. If you're a fan of fried food, this dish would be the right choice! Fresh prawn dipped into the tempura batter accompanied by the sauce, (Y). I would suggest that you finish them while it is hot!
Tempura – Tempura Moriwase - $23.80

Tempura – Tempura Moriwase - $23.80

Next, we tried their Cod fish. The fish was fresh, the slices of "solid meat" and not those that are not fresh and they come apart. The sauce was of the right saltiness level too!
Gindara Nitsuke (Japanese Cod Fish) - $18.80

Gindara Nitsuke (Japanese Cod Fish) - $18.80

Do try their Ninniku Gohan aka garlic rice -$4.80 which was really fragrant! And if you like clams, you can also try their Asari Miso Soup - $7.80 , which has a generous amount of clams!

In the video you'll also see the sauce that was provided and the appetizers – Namuru (Side Pickled Vegetables) - $7.80.

Lastly, not to worry about coming in big groups, they have private rooms available for group as large as 10 pax! Being a Japanese restaurant, the service was tip top, efficient and friendly!

I can't deny that the food is pricey, but 一分钱,一份收获.
Take a break from those Korean BBQ, give Arashi a try!

But as a student now, and given the price of the food, i don't think i'll visit again, unless during special events, or maybe i'll be back to try their beef of the lower grade at a cheaper price. smile

Been seeing a few reviews on Carpenter and Cook, on how great their Lemon tart and Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Tart was, so i decided to pay Carpenter and Cook a visit since it's pretty near my area.

This small little vintage cafe is located along Lorong Kilat in Bukit Timah, where you can find other icecream palors such as Udders and Alfero Artisan Gelato. It is also just walking distance away from Bukit Timah Food Centre (located at the opposite side of the road).
Exterior

Exterior

I was greeted with the vintage entrance of the cafe - a wooden bench and a set of wooden desk and uneven chairs.

I was there at about teatime and the small cafe was crowded, and there wasn't seats for us. Waited for like 10 mins before we could grab a seat.
The service crew was pretty efficient, the tables are being cleared almost immediately after the customer leave.
We had to share this long table with the others and the chair provided was just horrible. The cushion of the chairs were kind of spoilt, like you could literally feel your butt sitting on the wooden plank inside the chair. Or was this how a vintage chair was supposed to feel like? The seat was just uncomfortable..sad

What did pleased me was the vintage clocks and wok and cutleries. hanging on the walls of the cafe.

Do note that most of the vintage items that you see in this cafe can be bought. & they arent cheap too. I saw this wall clock being sold at $250. It's pretty reasonable for a piece of vintage, but I'm sure you are able to get it at a cheaper price somewhere else. Anyway, this cafe is for you to enjoy some food.
tiles

Not forgetting the tiles on the floor near the entrance. We hardly see such tiles around now. Small little decoration in the cafe created a wonderful setting which was appealing to the eyes.

Went over to the counter and saw the array of food choice that they have. From tarts, to muffins, to quiche and even sandwiches.

Array of food choices

We settled with Lemon Cream Tart $6.50, Sea Salt Caramel Tart $6.50 and a cup of Latte (large) to go with it $6.
Lemon Cream Tart

Lemon Cream Tart

Being a fan of sour stuffs (fyi, i like to eat lemon pulps), the Lemon Tart was my cup of tea. It wasnt that that sour, there's this sweetness in the cream which goes really well with the sourness. What i fancy more is the Tart shell! Tho it was slightly hard and we had a hard time cutting it with a knife, but the tart was not bland with the correct level of sweetness.
Sea Salt Caramel

Sea Salt Caramel

Another of their more famous tart is this Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Tart! This tart indeed up to its standard! Sea salt and chocolate can never go wrong. But it was quite different from the Lemon Tart. The lemon tart is more to the moist side due to the cream, but this Caramel Tart was filled with rich chocolate and a sprinkle of sea salt! Correct choice of tart!
Latte

Latte

The latte was a disappointment. At first i asked for Mocha, and was shocked that they dont serve mocha. I mean how can they not have mocha! huffysad And no, i wont order latte again from Carpenter and Cook.

In a nutshell, Carpenter and Cook definitely score in terms of its ambience and the tarts that they have, i heard that their Meringue Tart in great too. But as for coffee, i would not recommend it. tongue

I would come back again one day mad

Macaroons Smile Dec 10, 2013

If you've watched Clicknetwork.tv's Tried and Tested, you would have heard of this brand Canele. Shu Ann (The host of the show) mentioned that this is one of her favourites, so I ought to go check it out what's so great about it.

Macarons are expensive, you can't deny that. The cheapest that you most probably could get is from Delifrance (I don't quite like it). This isn't my first time getting macarons from Canele, I remember, I didn't really quite like the Rose flavour (pink one).

So that day, i was at Raffles City, before my illumi run, and i passed by the shop
Bought a pack of 6 @ $11.50, you can choose the flavours. I got every flavour except the rose one. Got 2 of the caramel ones.

Oh my! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the caramel one! It's sweet, with a little bit of saltiness in it! The next flavour I like would be the chocolate one!

My Favourite icecream place! I visit Island Creamery at least 2 times a month?!?
My Favourite would be their Brownie with a scoop of Black Forest Icecream.
The Black Forest icecream is slightly alcoholic, you would taste the rum, just slightly, but on some days, it will be slightly stronger.
Black Forest is my Favourite among all! Followed by Fresh Banana and Nutella.
I used to like their Very Berry, till they change their recipe, oh gosh, horrible, never ever ordering it, so there goes my Baked Alaska.

I usually have my icecream together with a slice of brownie! The hot brownie, with melted chocolate in it (the recently changed their recipe for this too I think...), with the cold icy icecream, (Y)
All time Favourite!

& they do provide takeaway tubs! Remember to recycle your tubs!

Note that blue labels and red labels are priced differently! $12 and $10 respectively.

I grew up in Teckwhye. Teckwhye market was a wide variety of food!

Popiah is a must for starter, especially when they take so long to prepare your food (the queue is always longggggg).

The popiah was generously warped with turnip, boiled egg, bean sprout! The popiah skin wasnt thick at all, and yet it doesnt break! A must try dish over at this coffee house at Teckwhye!
