Quiet place for lunch Smile Nov 20, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

Lacated inside Orchard OG,level one, this is definitely a great for a quiet lunch. When I entered the shop, there is only another male customer other than me. However as the place is, the service here is relatively warm. I was greeted when I sat down and when my food is served.
I ordered a curry rice lunch set and it costs only $6 inclusive of GST and service charge. Cheap as It's, the food serving is not small. Average rice portion with a palm size chicken katsu and of cos the yummilious Japanese curry. On top of that, there is also a half boilded egg and a bowl of seaweed soup served together. It was a hearty cheap lunch. Do try it if you are around the area during lunch time and wanted to find a quiet place to avoid the lunch crowd.

Good quality handmade popiah skin Smile Nov 17, 2013

Categories : Teochew | Coffeeshop

Located at the left side of the street, around 2 mins walk after Joo Chiat Complex, is where this humble little shop is. What I like about the popiah here is the popiah skins are homemade and this young chap made the popiah skin with his bare hand! Kudos to him.

I ordered a popiah and kueh pie tee set ($4) which comes with 1 standard popiah and 3 kueh pie tee. Kway Guan Huat's popiah comes in many varieties. For the set we ordered, we have the standard popiah which doesn't not include egg or prawns. If you like your popiah with prawns and egg, then do order the premium ones.

Overall I like the presentation of the set, simple and pretty, especially the kueh pie tee looks like 3 flowers beside the popiah. Taste wise, I find it rather ordinary. However I like the fact that the radish fillings are coarsely chopped which resulted to a more juicy mouthful experience which eating it. On top of that, perhaps it's due to the homemade popiah skin recipe, the thin translucent skin does not break easily as compare to those popiah outside. So I feel that it's quite a good idea to order those DIY Popiah party set from them during gathering and such. Do give them a try if you happen to be at Joo Chiat area. However if you find Joo Chiat too far, they have an outlet opened at the newly revamped Tangs basement too, at a slightly high price tagged.

Eat while it's hot. OK Nov 17, 2013

Categories : Malay | Bakery | Halal

Just about a stone throw away from the Kway Guan Huat is the famous Sha Zah confectionery.

Beside the malay puffs and samosa, they are also selling epok epok.
The rendeng curry puff ($1.60) is made with flaky pastry and mutton filling. Although the fillings are quite generous, I found the skin a little bit dry and hard when it's cold. Thus best to eat when it's piping hot or toast it before you eat it ya.

Spending per head: Approximately $2

Hidden Gem in a community centre Smile Nov 15, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Located at Anchorvale Community Centr, Brewbaker's is tucked away from the hustle and bustle while easily access via the public transport (Taxi, bus or LRT). If you are taking LRT, Farmway LRT is within 5 minutes walk to brewbaker's. On top of that, Brewbaker's is also a subsidiary of JP Pepperdine Group ( Jack's Place belongs to them too just in case you are wondering who are they). Thus you can be assure that with years of experience, food here is definitely not "MEH".

With the new Head chef from their fellow subsidery company, Hoshigaoka, Brewbaker's has now revamped their menu to a fusion of Japanese Western food. We started our night with Sashimi Caesar Salad ($12.80) which was totally delicious. Simple as it looked but the salad was orgasmic to the mouth with the Yuzu wasabi sauce topped with fresh sashimi (Salmon & Tuna) cubes, chicken cubes and garlic croutons. What I like best about this salad is the wasabi taste wasn't overpowering and with the Yuzu sauce, it tasted very refreshing and appetizing.

Atsuage Tofu($11.80) is a grilled tofu that flew in from Japan. Personally I feel that it's similar to Taufu goreng but served with lot of bonito flake and is best eaten with japanese soy sauce and chilli powder.

Carbonara Udon ($12.60) is handmade udon with carbonara sauce. Personally i like this a a lot as this dish is rather unique and the carbonara sauce is quite rich and flavourful.

Kinoko Pizza ($12.60) is homemade pizza dough with enoki, shimeiji and shitake mushroom. Although the dough was made thicker intentionally so as to not let the customer has a dry aftertaste, personally Ilike my pizza in thin crust. =)

N.Z Beef Rib ($21.00) was soft, juicy and tender. On top of that the homemade bbq sauce wasn't too sweet and the serving was relatively huge. Personally I love this dish as the beef here was perfectly cooked!

Beef Shabu Shabu ($28.60 for a serving for 2 pax) was served with New Zealand thinly sliced beef. According to the chef, the stock has no msg and is made with bonito flakes, soup stock, soya sauce and mirin. This was another hot fav of the night as the soup was good and there is lot of vegetables. I highly recommended this dish for anyone who like to have lot of vegetable but wanted some tasty meat and also delicious soup as well.

Matsu Sushi Moriawase ($31.00) here is made from handmade sushi rice thus this is something special. While I like the sushi rice which is slightly mushy, this might not be so appealing to those who like their rice slightly firmer.

We have our Ribeye Yakiniku ($32.80) done on the outdoor to prevent the bbq smell on our clothes. It was served with some shimeiji mushroom and pumpkin. The beef was well marinated and tender while the pumpkin was very sweet after grilling it. Personally I like this as I can hands on and of cos the food also tasted good. If I have a complain, that would be it takes a while before the food is cooked. So must sure you order other cooked food as well if you are ordering this. =)

What is a perfect meal without dessert right? Marble Cheesecake in a chocolate cup ($6.50) was served to end the night. All of us was wowed by the presentation of this dish. The cheesecake is those non baked type and not too sweet as well.

Overall it was a good dinning experience at brewbaker's. I would definitely go back and try other items on their menu if i am in Sengkang area. Once again, I am very thankful for the great food tasting experience organised by openrice and hosted by brewbaker's.

During the month of October, there is a sweet charity program going on and thus I get to find out about bar stories as they are offering Sea salt chocolate caramel tart ($14) as one of the dish for the charity program. The chocolate tart with a pinch of sea salt sprinkled on top is served with vanilla ice cream. What so special about the ice cream is it's made from vanilla pod instead of vanilla essence. On top of that, it's not too sweet as well.

I am quite impressed by the renovation here. Although it's not a very huge place but, it has housed with a bar counter whereby you can see how the bartenders mix your drinks. On top of that, the wooden door(entrance) is those with a pulley, very much reminded me of my science class during primary school. However service crews here weren't very friendly.
Thus I think I might not go back again unless I want to try their customised cocktails.
