So the Great Prawn Mee mission continues. We found ourselves in Old Airport Road Market & Food Centre to check out two old timer prawn mee stalls – Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle and Albert Street Prawn Mee, both having been raved about by many.
Not sure how many of you have had the chance to visit the once famous food centre under the Toa Payoh flyover along Whitley road in the 70s – that’s where the birthplace of Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle is.
We ordered only the dry version ($5) since it came with soup as well.
The soup was a vivid orangey colour, a sip of the soup revealed a strong and distinct prawn flavour that we think was too fishy. It also lacked sweetness and the much needed fragrance of a good prawn soup. Compared to many other prawn mee we have evaluated in the last few weeks, the prawn broth of Whitley Road Prawn Noodle was mediocre.
It's a head-scratcher why their loyal fans keep on returning despite the myriad of issues we experienced. Though Whitley Road Prawn Noodle is purportedly one of the best prawn noodles in Singapore, we have our reservations!

Fans of Da Dong Prawn Noodles probably get quite annoyed with the frequent shifting, opening and closing of this highly dynamic stall, like a mischievous boy that’s unable to sit still, it is quite a feat trying to keep track of where the shop would move to next. As of now, the shop has re-appeared at Joo Chiat road, occupying a stall in the coffeeshop.
As always, we ordered both the dry and soup version.
Dry version ($8) – the sauce blended well with the noodles, with the shallot oil and ingredients harmonizing well, just that the portion was probably a little small for the price we paid.
Soup version ($8) – again the bowl of prawn mee was quite small with two small prawns, some bean sprouts and a few slices of pork.
Our verdict, Da Dong Prawn Noodles has good prawn broth, except that the portion may be not as generous as some other famous prawn mee stalls. Steep pricing and tight control of portion size might be an issue for some here!
Although the prawn noodles tasted quite good but we will not come back due to his attitude and steep price!

Chicken rice ($16.80)
We ordered both the white steamed chicken and roasted chicken, Yeo Keng Name has been around for many years and famous for the chicken rice, we have our expectations on the chicken since the shop has won many accolades and rave review. Unfortunately, both the steamed white chicken and roasted chicken turned out to be a complete disappointment. The steamed white chicken was not juicy or moist but hard and tough, it was featureless even with the sauce doused over it. The roasted chicken was not anything fair better. We are perplexing what really went wrong with YKN? How can a name associate with chicken rice produce such poor quality chicken? Are there using frozen chicken or “cut corner” when preparing the chicken? The rice was not impressive as well, it lacked of the fragrance from the chicken stock and the garlicky smell, it was a plate of rice without much of the character. Even the soup was not as tasty as any ordinary chicken rice stall on the street. The chili sauce was just….sigh….. enough for the critics but if you are a chicken rice fan, perhaps this is not the right place for you.

Average Food in No Man's Land Cry Nov 01, 2013

Ulu Ulu Café Lounge is a quiet and rather cosy place where you’ll come by once and never come back again. Unless it is for their Slow Roasted Chicken which I have to emphasise, is a definite must try! Then again, this is just the main course, they do serve other dishes during lunch, so you might want to give that a shot, especially if you’re working in the area. If you love 95.0FM, this is the station that they play on the radio!

Visit http://ieatandeat.com/ulu-ulu-cafe-lounge/ on the dishes you might want to stay away from!

Think of the best satay sauce you’ve ever had. The direct opposite is how the sauce from Satay Sejati is like. The sauce was a disappointment; it was diluted and lacked of any character at all. It was so plain, I wonder if they ran out of sauce and they just poured more water into it. The taste of the peanut is non-existent, what a shame it was considering that the actual satay was already plain.
