A good “kway” also has to marry well with the broth. Here, we were quite impressed with the savory broth that’s doused over the bowl of white noodles, and Xing Yun probably has one of the best versions around. We could fully appreciate the aroma of the herb and spices in the bowl without it being too overpowering. All of us simply loved it.
Of course, another important aspect of a good kway chap is the braised meat and other ingredients. The braised meat was tender and flavoursome, and the seasoning was well permeated deep into the meat and was a succulent dish that we all enjoyed. Other dishes like the salted vegetable was soft and not too salty. Finally, the chili sauce was a good blend of sweet and sour with an appealing tanginess, and most importantly, the right level of spiciness, making it a nice dip to go with the braised items.

The shop is decorated with old posters featuring those 60s’ celebrities, vintage wooden furniture, the biscuit tins, black and white mosaic flooring to evoke a 1960s atmosphere. An old CRT television was placed right at the entrance, the red painted iron sliding gate reminiscent of the old shop houses in some of the old estates, the shop is decorated with old posters featuring those 60s’ celebrities, vintage wooden furniture, the biscuit tins, black and white mosaic flooring to evoke a 1960s atmosphere. A good dose of nostalgia rarely found in modernized Singapore.
However, the food serves are just average, nothing really impressed us. Some of the desserts served were too sweet to our liking while some mains served were too salty for us. Maybe because it’s managed by youngsters, there wasn’t nostalgia in every mouthful as we had hoped.
Mains, desserts and drinks you might want to give a shot:
Zi Pao Kai with Beehoon ($8.90)
Sng Muay Pop ($3.90)
Fake bird’s nest ($2.90)

Though this food centre is one of the biggest in Singapore, locating the stall is not that difficult, just look for the longest queue and you will most likely find yourself standing in front of the stall. We often saw the snaking line and gave it a pass. Still, our glutton nature won out in the end. We had to find out: why is this kway chap worthy of a 30 minute wait?
$18.50, that was how much we spent to try the food, as we ordered most of the items available on the menu.
The bowl of kway chap has the right texture of chewiness and softness, and a dousing of the braised dark sauce proved to be a good complement to the bowl of soupy kway. Everyone of us enjoyed all the items ordered.
This is one of the best Kway Chap we have eaten.

It has been a long time since we last visit to the stall, perhaps five to seven years ago or probably even more. However, this is one of the kway chap stalls that is deeply ingrained in our memories. Something that can stay in a person memory is usually the best or the worst memory, and this is especially true when come to food.Well, the reason is straight forward; we don’t condone hawkers that are cocky and arrogant. Then, why are we back here again after so many years? Reason is that simple; we observed and found they have improved in the attitude, so we decided to give them a try.
We ordered a mixture of braised pork, tau pok, intestine and eggs. The braised pork, tau pok, intestines and the heavenly braised eggs were still well marinated and soaked up all the essence of the gravy. The intestines were well cleaned and did not have the stench of the viscera parts. We especially love the braised eggs, the familiar nostalgia taste crept stealthily back into our taste buds when the egg was delivered in our mouth. The eggs were the first item we ordered and this is one of the die die must eat items from the stall. The flavour is simply zesty and luscious that is regrettable if you missed it out in your order.
This is one of the better Kway chap that we have eaten.

We ordered the serving for two ($9) and it came with standard braised items like pork belly, innards, Tau pok (fluffy fried bean curd), eggs, fish cakes and salted vegetable. The “Kway” was smooth and has a soft texture, the interesting part was the sauce added into the bowl of “kway”, it tasted sweet with a touch of cinnamon flavour. This is the first time we’ve ever tasted sweet kway chap and honestly, because it’s so different from what have come to expect, we are are not sure if we can accept it yet…
The assortment of braised items score well for their excellent taste and texture, we especially like the melt-in-your-mouth braised pork. The innards did not have the porky smell and go very well with the chili sauce as well. The Chili sauce is worth a special mention, as it comes with a perfect balance of sweetness and sourness accompanied by the right level of spiciness. This is probably one of the best chili sauce we’ve ever tasted from a Kway Chap stall.
