Food Tasting: Hombre Cantina OK Feb 09, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Latin American/South American | Mexican | Bars/Lounges

What was I doing at CBD area on a Saturday noon? Nah.... not for work, of coz! I was here for another session of food tasting, thanks to Openrice! Hee

Hombre Cantina is located at Boat Quay, facing the Singapore River. With its alfresco dining concept, it makes a nice place to chill out over Mexican food and a beer or two. =)

And you 'hear' me right, we were having Mexican food at Hombre, really unique hor? To me, Mexican food is probably nachos, tacos & salsas sauces.... Let's find out more!

Palette of colorful and gorgeous looking dishes! Cant wait to dig in!

First, we had the plain nachos to try out the 3 salsas sauces. From the left to right, we had the mild pineapple chile salsas, medium fire roasted tomato salsas and finally, the most spicy one, hot salsa verde.

The nachos were freshly made, so they remained crispy at the end of our 1.5 hour session. I was rather amazed that they didnt become "lau hong" after so long. Keke. Definitely an addictive snack for the chip lovers.

There are 6 mains to choose from the menu, each priced at $15+, namely Nachos, Quesadillas, Salad Bowl, Rice Bowl, Tacos and Burrito.

Nachos

Tortilla chips topped with black beans paste, cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream & fresh cilantro. It was quite a huge basket and I suggested to share it with friends rather than having it as a main on your own. The 'secret ingredient' was the black beans paste, which was surprisingly good.

Quesadillas

Tortilla folded & grilled with cheese, with the filling of your own choice: Fried Pacific Dory / Roasted Pork Shoulder/Braised Beef Brisket/Roasted Chicken Thigh/Roasted Veggies

Roasted Chicken Thigh

Braised Beef Brisket

We got to try both the chicken and beef fillings, which were the more popular selection. I must say, this was my favorite main. The quesadillas were served warm with generous servings of the meat filling.

Burrito

Tortilla with Mexican-styled rice, black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo & sour cream, with the filling of your own choice: Fried Pacific Dory / Roasted Pork Shoulder/Braised Beef Brisket/Roasted Chicken Thigh/Roasted Veggies

Roasted Veggies

Braised Beef Brisket

For the rice lovers, you can opt for the burrito. The rice tasted a bit tangy and went well with the braised beef brisket, which was pretty tender. A pity was that the portion was a bit too big to handle? It may be messy to eat, especially for the office ladies. What I did was to just scoop out the filling and just ate the filling lor... Probably making them into mouth size portions will be better?

Tacos

3 soft corn tortillas wrapped with cabbage & pico de gallo, with the filling of your own choice: Fried Pacific Dory / Roasted Pork Shoulder/Braised Beef Brisket/Roasted Chicken Thigh/Roasted Veggies

I only tried the one with the medium salsas (the bottom picture), which came with the fried pacific dory. The fried pacific dory was nice, served warm and top with the cool tomato salsas.

Salad Bowl

Lettuce topped with black beans, pico de gallo & sour cream, topped of with your choice of filling.

Rice Bowl

Mexican-styled rice topped with black beans, lettuce, black beans, pico de gallo & sour cream, topped of with your choice of filling.

At one glance, the salad bowl and rice bowl looked quite the same.

The difference is merely more lettuce for the salad bowl or mexican-styled rice for the rice bowl. Personally, I prefer the salad bowl, being the healthier option and tasted refreshing! Especially, after we had so much tortilla earlier on. =p

For sides, we had the Mexican corn ($8) and Chicken Chicharrones ($10)

The corns were sprinkled with Hombre's spice blend & cheese. But I find that the corns were a bit dry, not quite my liking, so I probably give this a miss next time.

Chicken Chiccharrones what? I can already see the question marks popping. Dont be shock ar.... actually, they were fried chicken skins. The skins were crispy and not oily. And guess what? It was FREE during the Happy Hour 5 - 7pm DAILY. Free + daily = ultimate combination liao.

Need more spice? Hehe.... #neverseebeforespicesomusttakepicture #superlonghashtag

Seafood Counter

If you've read my blog before, you would know I always "attack" the seafood first!! Who will go to buffet and eat vegetable, of coz must eat the expensive stuff mah!!

Close-up of the seafood courtesy of ME!

Mud Crabs

Crayfish

Scallops

Sweet Clams

Carousel really has a wide variety of seafood to offer, probably even more than The Line.

There were also appetizers like ham, smoked turkey etc. Cant remember eating them though.. Too many varieties lah, difficult to comb through everything..

Another mystery items... Seriously, now I look at this picture, I have no idea what they are??? Hahahaha

Sashimi & Sushi Counter

Pretty, pretty... A bed of roses??

My favourite salmon!! I was quite selective in terms of eating sashimi, salmon is definitely my first choice. Another favourite is amaebi which they dun have it here. Still, I was pretty satisfied with the sashimi.. Freshness is the vital element!

Now let's move on to the " ang-mo" counter. Again, I was overwhelmed by their varieties.

Beef => This was kinda tough though... one serving was enuff for me

Roasted Chicken

Roasted lamb, potatos

There was also a chef who would help you to cook your pasta the way you like. Choose between penni, linguine, spaghetti and the sauce. There you have, your own pasta!!

Chinese Roast Stall

Indian Food Counter

Finally, the Dessert counter! Regardless of how much I eat, there will always be room for dessert. Tell me which ger can resist the temptation of dessert, she badly needs my counselling service!!

Cakes, mousses, puddings... You name it, you got it! =p

More!!

Bling Bling Pudding ~ Mango Pudding, Pandan Tiramisu, Chocolate Pudding(s)

Bread Pudding

Usually, I felt that bread pudding is just soggy bread so no special liking for it. But the one at Carousel was good, so must try!! Remember to put lotza of vanilla topping on it! Perfect match!!

Relish  OK Dec 20, 2014
Categories : Burgers and Sandwiches

We needed dinner and without much 'hassle' (as selection was not plentiful), we decided on beef cheek to share.

Slow Braised Beef Cheek with Buttery Mash - $25

I would say the beef cheek was alright, really soft although a tad boring for one pax to finish everything on the plate. I decided beef cheek isnt my cup of tea, I still prefer my beef to be chewy & tender, rather than mashed up. Well, it just lack the texture that I like. *Shrugged*

Spam Fries with Kaffir Lime Mayo- $8

I was curious what was spam fries and ordered it as well. Alas, wrong choice. it was a weird taste, a tad saltish sourish?

Taiwan Lychee Beer - $13

This caught my eyes as I scanned through the drinks menu. They got both Melon & Lychee flavored beer but i decided the latter as i thought the taste was more distinct. End up, it was really good if you have a sweet tooth, can literally smell & taste the lychee!

Overall food was nothing to shout about, but great place to drink ands chill with friends.

L'Entrecote OK Nov 29, 2014
Categories : French | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

Complimentary rose wine

Complimentary Bread

Homemade Duck Foie Gras Terrine - $19

A super big piece of duck foie gras was given, which made the presentation not so pleasant. Taste wise, I find it salty and too 'fishy' for my liking. We didnt finish it, and we noticed that the table beside us also didnt finish the foie gras.

Entrecote Steak & Walnuts Green Salad - $29

Additional legendary sauce/ walnuts green salad at $5.

The green salad with the additional walnuts was a nice starter before we indulged ourselves in lotza meat! Oh yeah, the most appealing part of having dinner here to me is ~ both the fries and beef are refillable. Great news for big eaters huh?

Taste wise, pretty mediocre and I dun quite understand what's so great about the "legendary" sauce that people actually need to top up $5 for additional sauce, while it's free to top up the beef. Doesn't sound logical to me. The beef itself came in 4 doneness - raw, medium raw, medium done & well done. Yes, there were dinners beside me who took the 'raw' option.. felt weird to me.

Overall, it was a rather passable meal with little variety. Probably a better choice for those who merely just wan the quantity. *Shrugged*

The Marmalade Pantry OK Nov 29, 2014
Categories : Desserts and Cakes | Burgers and Sandwiches | Salads/ Acai Bowl

Came here for dinner after work. We ordered 1 pasta and soup to share as we also wanted to try their cupcakes. To our pleasure surprise, the waiter offered to splitthe portion for us. Well, that was the first time I came across such service! Impressive, definitely etched in my memory. And the portion was decent, after splitting it into two, which meant it was generous to begin with. =)

Field Mushroom Soup with Truffled croutons - $10

My half portion of the soup, looks pretty okay rite? And they also made sure that we each had a small slice of bread. LOL

This soup will most likely appeal to people who like truffle, coz it was pretty obvious.

Seared Scallop Linguini with Tiger Prawn bisque - $24

Proof of 2 portions! Hehe

The pasta was served in a soupy style, just like our Chinese prawn soup noodle. In fact, the soup tasted like one too. Probably not your choice if you prefer thicker sauce base for your pasta.

William - $4.50

Chocolate cake with william pear and vanilla with butter cream frosting

Ok, let's "dissect" this cake. First of all, the vanilla with butter cream frosting was terribly sweet. I have a pretty high threshold for sweetness but this was simply too sweet, for goodness sake. Even eating sugar cube itself taste much better. Guess what we did? Scrapped off the frosting lor..

What left behind now was simply just ordinary (sweet) chocolate cupcake and the location of the william pear was a mystery.

Bananarama - $4.50

Banana walnut cake with caramel cream cheese

I think the cream cheese tasted much better than the cream frosting, sweet but manageable. I like the part they added nuts in the cupcake which gave a more flavorful & crunchy texture.
