Charisma D Venue OK Mar 20, 2016

We were here for a food-tasting session on a thursday evening. The location is not so accessible via the public transport. It's not near the MRT station and there's only 1 bus number at its nearest bus stop. But if you drives, it's still ok since the restaurant is facing a open air carpark.

We were served 3 drinks - Nojito, Thai Milk Tea and Lemon Tea. I opted for Nojito since it was the most unique among the drinks. It's a non-alcoholic version of the commonly known Mojito. It was refreshing but lack the punch if you are used to Mojito. On a good side, it's safe for both kids and drivers. =p

Next, we had 2 sides - Portbello and Fried Calamari. Both were okay, although I thought the calamari was kinda bland. The accompany side salad left a better impression on me with its special strawberry vingar sauce. Oh ya, if you are a non-spicy eater like me, please do not attempt the 'harmless' looking sauce that came with the Portbello. My tongue was burning throughout the session (and they dont served iced water here) =(.

Do bear with the photos, lighting here was really bad for food photography.  It was changing coloured lightings. But if you are just here for the food, it does give you a romantic ambience? Sorry, I disgress.

This was their Korean version of fried chicken. Tender but spicy. Hey, I aint fan of korean fried chicken.

Bandung Pasta, which I didnt get to eat coz there was only 1 serving of each dish to share among us.

Briyani Lamb Shank. It smelt really great when it was served on the table, but the taste fell short. The rice was okay but the lamb got a strong mutton taste which the spices didnt manage to conceal. The portion was big (meant for 2-3 pax to share) but we didnt manage to finish it.

Ocean D Venue. In other words, fish n chips. The fish was okay without having a thick batter although I prefered the fries. Haha.

Ong Bak Pasta. This was probably the best dish that I had that was worth recommending. It was creamy with a tinge of tom yum taste. It was actually better than the one that we had at 49seat which was recommended for tom yum pasta.

We had waffles and chocolate fondue for desserts. Dont really like the waffles which was too soft/soggy for me, I like my waffles to be crispy at the outside and fluffy inside.

Chocolate Overload Milkshake. This was quite disappointing as it tasted more of chocolate milk than chocolate milkshake.

Food Tasting: Hombre Cantina OK Feb 09, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Latin American/South American | Mexican | Bars/Lounges

What was I doing at CBD area on a Saturday noon? Nah.... not for work, of coz! I was here for another session of food tasting, thanks to Openrice! Hee

Hombre Cantina is located at Boat Quay, facing the Singapore River. With its alfresco dining concept, it makes a nice place to chill out over Mexican food and a beer or two. =)

And you 'hear' me right, we were having Mexican food at Hombre, really unique hor? To me, Mexican food is probably nachos, tacos & salsas sauces.... Let's find out more!

Palette of colorful and gorgeous looking dishes! Cant wait to dig in!

First, we had the plain nachos to try out the 3 salsas sauces. From the left to right, we had the mild pineapple chile salsas, medium fire roasted tomato salsas and finally, the most spicy one, hot salsa verde.

The nachos were freshly made, so they remained crispy at the end of our 1.5 hour session. I was rather amazed that they didnt become "lau hong" after so long. Keke. Definitely an addictive snack for the chip lovers.

There are 6 mains to choose from the menu, each priced at $15+, namely Nachos, Quesadillas, Salad Bowl, Rice Bowl, Tacos and Burrito.

Nachos

Tortilla chips topped with black beans paste, cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream & fresh cilantro. It was quite a huge basket and I suggested to share it with friends rather than having it as a main on your own. The 'secret ingredient' was the black beans paste, which was surprisingly good.

Quesadillas

Tortilla folded & grilled with cheese, with the filling of your own choice: Fried Pacific Dory / Roasted Pork Shoulder/Braised Beef Brisket/Roasted Chicken Thigh/Roasted Veggies

Roasted Chicken Thigh

Braised Beef Brisket

We got to try both the chicken and beef fillings, which were the more popular selection. I must say, this was my favorite main. The quesadillas were served warm with generous servings of the meat filling.

Burrito

Tortilla with Mexican-styled rice, black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo & sour cream, with the filling of your own choice: Fried Pacific Dory / Roasted Pork Shoulder/Braised Beef Brisket/Roasted Chicken Thigh/Roasted Veggies

Roasted Veggies

Braised Beef Brisket

For the rice lovers, you can opt for the burrito. The rice tasted a bit tangy and went well with the braised beef brisket, which was pretty tender. A pity was that the portion was a bit too big to handle? It may be messy to eat, especially for the office ladies. What I did was to just scoop out the filling and just ate the filling lor... Probably making them into mouth size portions will be better?

Tacos

3 soft corn tortillas wrapped with cabbage & pico de gallo, with the filling of your own choice: Fried Pacific Dory / Roasted Pork Shoulder/Braised Beef Brisket/Roasted Chicken Thigh/Roasted Veggies

I only tried the one with the medium salsas (the bottom picture), which came with the fried pacific dory. The fried pacific dory was nice, served warm and top with the cool tomato salsas.

Salad Bowl

Lettuce topped with black beans, pico de gallo & sour cream, topped of with your choice of filling.

Rice Bowl

Mexican-styled rice topped with black beans, lettuce, black beans, pico de gallo & sour cream, topped of with your choice of filling.

At one glance, the salad bowl and rice bowl looked quite the same.

The difference is merely more lettuce for the salad bowl or mexican-styled rice for the rice bowl. Personally, I prefer the salad bowl, being the healthier option and tasted refreshing! Especially, after we had so much tortilla earlier on. =p

For sides, we had the Mexican corn ($8) and Chicken Chicharrones ($10)

The corns were sprinkled with Hombre's spice blend & cheese. But I find that the corns were a bit dry, not quite my liking, so I probably give this a miss next time.

Chicken Chiccharrones what? I can already see the question marks popping. Dont be shock ar.... actually, they were fried chicken skins. The skins were crispy and not oily. And guess what? It was FREE during the Happy Hour 5 - 7pm DAILY. Free + daily = ultimate combination liao.

Need more spice? Hehe.... #neverseebeforespicesomusttakepicture #superlonghashtag

Wheeler's Yard Smile Dec 27, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

Wheeler's Yard is a place where food & bike come together "hidden" in an industrial estate. I will not know this "ulu" place if not of the ravings from other bloggers. I love the spacious and unpretentious layout and I can totally imagine coming here with a group of friends to just eat and be fat. Heehee

More seating outside the cafe!

It's a self service concept here, so proceed to the counter to place your order. Get your buzzer and wait patiently for your food.

Our orders:

Hum Bao Bao - $23.90

Grilled Chicken - $17.90

Cappuccino - $5

Root Beer - $3.90

The grilled chicken was fairly normal.

Super big burger with 2 thick patty & oozing cheese! The portion was humongous and I couldnt finish myself. No wonder most of those who ordered the dish were guys..

I was deciding between Soursop Meringue Tart ($7.50) and Horlicks Tart ($7.90) as both sound more interesting than the commonly available fruit and chocolate tarts. Since hubby decided to "abandon" me by not sharing the load of the dessert with me, I went ahead to order the Soursop Meringue Tart which I know he will not like it being a boring and unadventurous eater. >.<

Guess what? I loved it and I thought it was the best order of the day! The tart was crispy & hard, just the way I like the crust to be. The soursop filling was refreshing yet not overpowering. This is definitely something that I will order again. =)

Disappointing xmas eve lunch Cry Dec 25, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : English | European | Steaks and Grills

1) chicken cordon

the chicken was quite tough and the cheese was almost non existent. It should probably be renamed as chicken breastmeat? =p
.

.

2) saffon risotto

i like risotto for its rich and creamy texture but apparently the risotto here failed to reach the mark. It tasted a tad sour, which wasnt really pleasant. Oh well, at least the crab meat was fresh.

Overall, the bill came up to $40ish, considered expensive for the food quality. =(

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Hotel | Seafood | Buffet

Eating buffet is definitely an art. How to eat everything, making every penny worthwhile, and without making yourself uncomfortably full..... Well, FOLLOW ME as I embarked the journey for your eye feasting!

First Stop --> Seafood

Well, obviously this was the most expensive session in the whole resturant. As a seasoned buffet eater, how could I not start off with all the sea treasures? What The Line offered was nothing fanciful, but juz a pure heart in just serving fresh seafood! Hmmm.. I could almost taste the sea salt myself! Ha..

Prawn, Mussel, Crabs

The crabs were a bit, crabby to handle though... Could have been better if they were being shelled! But the prawns were great! Juicy & Sweet!

Oysters

Not a great fan of oysters myself. Anyway, review from my colleagues were, Osyters were indeed good, without the stingy smell.

Second Stop --> Sashimi

Another must visit stop! The sashimi would be freshly cut when you make your order over the counter. They have tuna, salmon and squid. ^__^

Chunky slices of sashimi

If ya dun like raw fish, they have sushi as well. But then you lugi lah, sashimi at Sakae cost $6.50 (red plate) while california roll cost $1.90. Ya noe wat I meant hor? Hee

Third Stop --> Salad Bar

Well, not a must to stop here though. But I guess a bit of vege can ease the tension on your tummy.

Fourth Stop --> Grilled Session

Roast Chicken & Potato, Grilled fish & Prawn

Grilled fish & Prawn

The prawn were..... simply magnificent, terrifying! I could not find a better word to descible. As an advice, take the grilled prawn first. Coz it always run out and ya got to wait for the chef to grill in the next round.

Fifth Stop --> Cooked Food

Pasta, Lasagna

Chinese Cooked Food

Dim Sum

Sixth Stop -->Indian Food

Kebabs and Naans

Oh, I like the naans here. Even though they are taboo when eating buffet, I cant help but to take just one small slice...keke

Satay, roti prata, mutabak

Finally, the highlight of the day ---> Desserts!!!! SCREAM PPL!!

Chocolate Fondue

Unlike those pathetic fountain, this is Five Storey high at The Line! WOW!

Cupcakes

Pretty Dessert

Finally, end off with coffee and tea ( free-flow)... What a satisfying lunch!
