Was looking for a place to grab a quick bite in the forever crowded Orchard area and happened to see that there was no queue outside of Menya Musashi (it was about 20 minutes to 6pm on a Saturday evening). Wanting to satisfy our hunger quickly, we headed in and ordered the usual fare we would have in ramen places.
Gyoza

Gyoza

First up was the gyoza which was juicy and lightly grilled on one side. I think the volume of the filling and the size of the gyoza was just nice. One thing which needs improvement should be that it needs a bit more time on the grilled side to make it more crispy.
White tora chashu ramen

White tora chashu ramen

As for the white tora ramen, the noodles were OK but the soup was a little too salty and oily to my liking. The char siew was pretty big but then it didn't feel as tender as I would have wanted it to be.

I've not tried the other Menya Musashi outlets but just purely based on what I've tasted, I think the ramen here is decent but I probably would not want to queue up for it. I may return only if the restaurant is not jam-packed.

2-Mushroom Chicken Soup

2-Mushroom Chicken Soup

If not for the fact that the food here is pretty good, I would not have even bothered coming here for a second time. The first visit did put me off quite a bit due to the poor service but I needed to grab dinner before class on a Saturday evening and this was the only place I found without a queue. I was keeping my fingers crossed that it will be better the second time round.

Well, in terms of the food, it did impress me. However, the service still leaves much to be desired. The restaurant was only half-full and yet you have the waiters and waitresses standing around while I waited for my plain water and order. It left me wondering if the kitchen was too slow in dishing out the orders or the waiters had too little to do. In the end, I did not even ask them to bring my bill to the table. I walked straight to the counter to pay or else I would have wasted more time waiting for the bill.

Coming to the food, this mushroom chicken soup was really great. It was rich but not to the point of being overwhelming and it had lots of ingredients which made for a hearty meal. I wasn't expecting such a huge bowl of soup so if you are a small eater, chances are you will be quite full after finishing this.
Chocolate Fudge Cake

Chocolate Fudge Cake

The chocolate fudge cake was passable though. It wasn't moist enough and felt a bit rough in terms of its texture but in terms of taste, it was just right i.e. not too sweet or bland. I would have wanted the chocolate and the sponge cake to be more moist.
Rosemary sea salt chick

Rosemary sea salt chick

The rosemary sea salt chicken was quite unique since it comes with the apple cranberry sauce which is sweet. Coupled with the savoury rosti and chicken, it was unexpectedly good. As for the salad, it was a bit too sour for me so I guess there was too much vinegar in it.

Frankly speaking, if you can turn a blind eye to the patchy service for the sake of the food or relaxed atmosphere here, I think this outlet will be suitable for you. Otherwise, you might be better off going to other outlets or else you risk spoiling your appetite due to the long waiting time. I still like Cedele's food but I prefer spending my time elsewhere than to wait here and spoil my mood. When you are in a bad mood, nothing tastes good.

Black pepper prawn linguine

Black pepper prawn linguine

Was at Skinny Pizza for lunch and we ordered mains for each person and some pizzas to share. I ordered the black pepper prawn linguine where the pasta was cooked nicely but the prawns didn't taste so fresh and it even stuck to the shell. It would have been better for the prawns to be shelled before cooking so that they can absorb more of the black pepper flavour.
Macadamia roasted pumpkin pizza

Macadamia roasted pumpkin pizza

The Macadamia roasted pumpkin pizza was very unique and amazingly tasted good. It's different from the usual savoury or cheesy type of pizzas we eat most of the time and is light enough to pass off as a dessert.
Satay chicken pizza

Satay chicken pizza

The satay chicken pizza was also said to be a chef's recommendation but the general view across the table was that the satay chicken was a bit bland. However, I do like the abundance of vegetables spread across the pizza and that helped to take away any greasiness from the satay chicken.

Banchan

Banchan

We were famished after walking around for the whole afternoon and luckily, Jang Won was open from 5pm so we were glad to find a place which opens before 6pm. The place is relatively quiet compared to Togi just diagonally opposite but Jang Won has a nice homely feel with friendly staff. The waitress seems to be from the Philippines but I saw that she could write the order in Hangul so I guess she should know the language. The owners are Korean, according to what I heard before.
Today's banchan

Today's banchan

The photos I posted here were actually from two separate visits so that's why you are seeing two different sets of banchan. Depending on what you order and when you visit the restaurant, you may get slightly different banchan. I like most of them except for the tofu but it's not because I dislike it but rather I don't take tofu so I don't know how it tastes. According to those who had eaten it, the tofu was delicious.
Rabokki = ramen   ddeokbokki

Rabokki = ramen ddeokbokki

Rabokki was something I only knew after visiting Jang Won. It's actually a mixture of the ddeokbokki and ramyeon in the ddeokbokki sauce and I really like the combination. Not too spicy and the noodles were really flavourful after absorbing the sauce.
Grilled samgyeopsal

Grilled samgyeopsal

Coming to a Korean restaurant, BBQ meat is almost like a must-have. We got the samgyeopsal and had the kitchen grill it for us since we were too famished and didn't have the intention to get smoked. Anyway, you don't have to worry about the smoke since there were people grilling meat just behind us but we didn't end up smelling bad. The ventilation here does work well, I guess. The samgyeopsal was very nicely grilled so the meat juices were sealed in properly. Eating this on its own or with the vegetables will taste equally good.
Ginseng chicken soup

Ginseng chicken soup

The samgyetang here is well-flavoured and the chicken thoroughly cooked but not tough to eat. The portion is not that big so it can be consumed by one person.
Patbingsu

Patbingsu

Patbingsu can be considered as the Korean version of ice kacang but the flavour is somewhat different due to the ingredients used. It's not so sweet because there isn't so much syrup so it goes down well as a good dessert. However, the amount of ingredients would probably mean that you have to share this especially if you have eaten a hearty meal before trying the dessert.
Kimchi stew

Kimchi stew

The kimchi stew can seem rather overwhelming at first because it looks really red and thick. However, the flavour is just nice and is not as spicy as it seems. It can surely do with a bit more of pork though because it has more tofu and kimchi than the meat.
Fried kimchi with pork

Fried kimchi with pork

As for the fried kimchi with pork, it was OK but I think it needed a bit more spiciness and lesser vegetables so as to make the dish a bit more balanced.

On the whole, Jang Won offers good comfort food in a homely and clean atmosphere. Prices may be a bit steep on some items though so do be prepared for a big bill when you are ordering many dishes.

Teriyaki chicken, sausages, potato salad and fries

Teriyaki chicken, sausages, potato salad and fries

The first time when I went to Astons, I was pleasantly surprised that it served quality Western food at relatively low prices compared to most restaurants. To make it even better, the portions were huge. However, the portions have somehow shrunk a bit which I attribute it to rising costs. In addition, quality tends to be fluctuate at times.

During this visit, I had ordered the teriyaki chicken with sausages and potato salad and fries as sides. The size of the chicken had become much smaller than usual, sausages were OK while the potato salad had a few pieces which were not cut to bite-sized. Onion rings was good but then again, this is not something made in-house.

If you want to go to this outlet on weekends especially dinner, be sure to come before 6pm or else you will have to join a long snaking queue.
