Potato Madness! Smile Oct 26, 2013
I chanced upon this shop in Raffles City Shopping Centre selling a variety of baked potatoes with different fillings. Being a fan of all things potato, I tried the Chicken Curry Baked Potato set, which came with a drink, soup and salad. Let me finish the negatives first: the soup tasted odd. I'm not sure what soup it's supposed to be, but I'm assuming it has cheese and potato. Whatever the case, it didn't really work out for me.

Now to the star of the meal - the baked potato. It was baked close to perfection in my opinion. The potato was soft and I could cut into the potato skin easily and eat it together with the potato, as compared to some starchy potatoes that I'd have to end up disposing the skin. The potato was also relatively big, bigger than the classic Jack's Place's ones. I wasn't too impressed with the curry chicken filling. It wasn't bad, just nothing special. I was glad that they were generous with the curry though. I'd hate to finish all the sauce and still have potato leftover.

Some other interesting potatoes on the menu are Chilli Con Carne and P.D. Original. If you're a fan of potatoes, you can't miss this one.

It's not just coffee. Smile Oct 26, 2013

While I've been visiting Woodlands Civic Centre's outlet for the past few years, the new Starbucks at Woodlands Xchange gave me an alternative, especially since Civic Centre's outlet is always full. I was glad that I could find a seat here and the interior is definitely more spacious (Civic Centre's is very crammed and there's almost no space to walk).

While I'm a fan of Starbucks' seasonal beverages (such as the Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino above) and permanent beverages (such as the White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino), I also love their food options and the portions are just right for breakfast or tea break without compromising stomach space for lunch or dinner. While the prices are a little high, Starbucks is after all a well-known brand and the quality makes up for it. Here are some of the food items I've tried.

This chocolate danish is probably one of the cheapest food items in the store on display. It is very rich in chocolate and cream and not too dry, so it was pretty delightful.

The Potato, Cheese and Truffle Soup is one of the new offerings from Starbucks. They actually come in packets, but the staff will prepare the soup for you and deliver it to your table. The soup portion was actually very little (about half a cup), but it was thick and flavourful. They are also generous with the potato slices (I had 3-4 of them and they were large in size). The soup portion may be too small for the price though, especially since the potatoes take up a very large space.

I actually got the Herb Mac and Cheese from Civic Centre's outlet, but they're probably the same in every outlet. The staff will helpfully offer to heat up hot food stuff for you. The Mac and Cheese was really good, not too cheesy and the herbs gave it a saltier flavour. The edges were burnt though during the heating up, but that is forgivable.

Meaty but lacking OK Oct 26, 2013

Categories : Brazilian | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills | Buffet

Carnivore Appetite is supposedly the cheaper version of Carnivore, both selling Brazilian meat. Carnivore Appetite is actually one of the cheaper buffets around, being $19.90++ for lunch on weekdays. I haven't been to a buffet in a while and this one happens to fit within the budget, so I headed down to Marina Square.

The spread is actually quite decent. There's almost every kind of meat available and there's a live grilling station where the chef will cut you the meat on the spot. You can then complement the meat with the six different sauces available - I recommend the Pineapple Sauce and Port Wine Sauce if you're looking for different and delicious.

The food does get restocked regularly so there's always food, although this could also be because there weren't many people dining when I visited. There's a salad bar and I couldn't get my hands off the Prawn Cocktail (downside: there were too few prawns!). Mushroom Soup is available and some other must-try dishes include the roasted, well-seasoned potatoes and juicy sausages.

I was disappointed that there weren't any desserts available, but then again with the price I shouldn't complain. Overall, the meat was tender and tasty. With so much meat available, I only managed two rounds of food. Maybe next time, I should come with an empty stomach.

Big breakfast at big prices Smile Oct 26, 2013

I heard that this place was opened by the same people behind Tiong Bahru Bakery and served breakfast food, so I went down to try it out. It was hard to miss the cafe as it had a very unique entrance (with stairs) as compared to the other shops in the area. Being there around 10+ am in the morning, it was almost exclusively filled with Caucasians and we were directed to the left side with the long empty table.

You can't go to "Coffee Roasters" without drinking their coffee, so I got a cup of latte and it was really smooth. It wasn't too bitter and I did not have to add any sugar, so I really loved it. Of course, the latte art was beautiful.

On to the main meal, I ordered the Common Man Full Breakfast. The eggs are organic and free-range and can be done in any style, so I went with poached. I felt that it wasn't really well done though as the yolk did not smoothly flow out upon breaking. On the other hand, my dad ordered the Organic Eggs Benedict (I wasn't too excited about ox cheeks) and his eggs were poached better than mine. The tomato salsa tasted kinda weird so I didn't use it in the end. I absolutely loved the hash brown and beans because they were something special. The hash brown was like a thin flat pancake and you could still see the potato in shreds. I loved the tomato-based sauce of the beans and felt they went well together. The rest were pretty standard: bacon, sausage, mushrooms.

The downside would be the prices - it costs almost 20 bucks for a dish. Even though the food was good, I didn't think it warranted such high prices. I'd prefer getting my breakfast from Tiong Bahru Bakery.

Mille Crepe! Smile Oct 26, 2013

Categories : American | Café | Desserts and Cakes

I am not usually a Mille Crepe person and have only tried it once at Everything with Fries, but hearing that Lady M all the way from New York opened an outlet in Singapore, dessert-loving me just had to go down to Marina Square's new wing to get a slice even if it's half way across the island from where I live. I visited on the week of its opening, but I forgot to post a review (oops!)

I bought a slice of the Signature Mille Crepe ($7.50) for takeaway and it came in a pretty box. I was pretty confused about the ordering process at first - you had to order at the small counter and head to the other side to collect the cake - and I couldn't find the prices of the cakes on display and had to ask the staff instead. Fortunately, the staff were very friendly and guided me along despite the long queue. Also, I had expected it to be more expensive and was really glad to know that they were rather affordable (given the brand and all).

By the time I got home, it became a little watery (they recommended to refrigerate the cake within 1 hour) so I immediately tucked in. The mille crepe was very soft and the layers were very distinct that I could actually peel them off layer by layer. The cream taste was very strong and delicious and I literally gobbled up the cake within a few minutes, savouring every bite.

When time permits, I'll definitely go back down. Their entire range of cakes look delicious and I can't wait to try them all.
